ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

SUMMER HOLYDAY this Friday, Aug 15 is the feast of the Assumption of Mary. This holyday of obligation celebrates the “dormition or falling asleep of Mary. It is our ancient belief that after her death, Mary was taken up, body & soul, to heaven.

Liturgies are Thursday at 7 pm and Friday at 9 am.

SWITCHING PLACES Next weekend, Fr. Jim Eisele and I will be taking each other’s place. Jim is pastor of St. Agnes in the north end of Flint. He will be coming here to talk about DuKette Catholic School which is located in the building which once housed St. Agnes’ grade and high school.

DuKette is a Catholic School with a mission to serve the people who live in one of the most depressed areas of our whole diocese. It was started several years ago as part of our Catholic mission to African-Americans who live in that area. It provides a safe environment that fosters the love of God in the Catholic tradition.

Each summer, we have a missionary come and explain their work and ask for our support. This year, Jim is coming to us to share the missionary work done by DuKette and ask for our support. I hope you will be generous!

I have a special affection for both DuKette and Fr. Jim Eisele. Forty-two years ago, my family moved to the north end and we joined St. Agnes. After that one-year, we moved to the southeast side and joined Blessed Sacrament Parish. Although it was only a single year, I still have wonderful memories of St. Agnes where I was taught by Mrs. Kimmel, who was one of the best teachers I ever had! DuKette is named after Fr. Norman DuKette, who was the first African American priest in our diocese – and a very kind and saintly man. The school located at St. Agnes continues the mission of Fr. DuKette and the old school.

Fr. Jim Eisele was one of the first young men I ever helped enter the seminary. He comes from a wonderful Livingston County family (Fowlerville).

I hope you will generously welcome both next weekend.

Fr. Dave Howell

Please remember in your prayers Mary Janke and family in the death of Fred Laber, Mary’s brother.

Remember, also, Stan Domanik and family in the death of Ann Marie Domanik.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary

Proverbs 9: 1-6

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings, compiled over a number of centuries. Here, the author personifies Wisdom as a person. She offers guidance on how to live a life pleasing to God. This is symbolized as a banquet at which she serves fine food.

Ephesians 5: 15-20

Today’s reading continues reflections on how to live as a Christian in everyday life. In the world in which the author lived, ignorance and addiction to alcohol were among the things that kept people from living a dignified life. The first-century author sets forth high expectations for Christians.

John 6: 51- 58

Today we come to the most direct and radical assertions in the “bread of life” discourse. What does it mean to “eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood”?

There are Christians who believe that those who are not followers of Christ cannot be saved. That is sad because it seems to limit the ways in which God can save the world. We live by faith.

WE NEED YOU!

Catechists and aides are needed for many of our classes. Training is provided and you work with a partner in each class. We need you to help us break open our faith and to make it meaningful for the youth and families of our parish. Catechists, aides, hall monitors, babysitters, office assistant - all these openings need to be filled for our Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Sunday morning class times. Please volunteer for a few hours a week to make a difference in the life of our parish!

Walk-in Registration for fall classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the office from 10:00am-3:30pm; please see Josie!

Thank you to our whole JWJ crew including the leaders and all those who attended! Thank you also to Tom Zuyus who took pictures of our youth praising God! Together we raised $1,145.72 for the Hearn Family to help them with their medical costs of Lisa’s cancer!! Jamie (Lisa’s big sister) couldn’t believe it when the fishbowl we were using broke due to the amount of change the children were bringing in! This truly is a hands-on experience for our youth in reaching out to those in need and spreading the love of Jesus! The get-well poster and pictures we made all week long were taken up to Lisa in the hospital Friday night to cheer her up and decorate her room! Thank you to our wonderful girls and boys!

Enjoy the week! Mary mmahar@parishmail.com

RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

the ministry to which all are called

Those entering the Rite this year will begin their journey in the pre-catechumenate (Faith Inquiry) on Monday, August 11. These are men, women and children (age 7 and older) seeking Christ who have expressed the desire to learn about our Catholic way of life. We will minister to them in many ways:

We, the Assembly will pray with them, support them and celebrate with them throughout the year.

Catechists will echo the Gospel. They help guide them to experience God’s presence and love in his or her own life in and through the Word.

Sponsors are spiritual friends. They will support and care for them, sharing faith, and the life of our community with them.

Hospitality will embrace them in our community by welcoming them, serving refreshments and making them feel at home.

Retreats: Others will help guide the catechumens through scripture, prayer, reflections, and sharing.

We, the assembly, are greatly blessed. For we are all called to this ministry through our liturgical prayer, our community, our Christian way of life. It is our experience, our example and our prayer that will help guide these men and women in the formation of their faith.

If you are interested in the role of catechist, sponsor, or hospitality call Diane Kubus in the parish office (810) 229-8624. Resources, training, formation and support are provided. Come find out more about RCIA. We are all on a journey of faith. RCIA is one journey you will never forget!

BeFrienders

The word "ministry" is defined as the act of serving others. Our task, within our faith, has grown with the increased involvement of the laity in the church. The BeFriender ministry seeks to reach out to others beyond the traditional setting of the Sunday Mass. This is not a ministry of professionals but members of the family of Christ reaching out to help others within the family. If you are troubled or seeking help with a problem, please contact Judy Scharf.

The Salvation Army has recently requested our help in meeting the needs of the poor and homeless in our community. Personal care items, that we take for granted, such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, diapers, wipes, paper products, and laundry detergents are all in great demand. This August, we will sponsor a “Summer Collection” to collect personal care items for the poor and homeless. As you do your shopping, please remember those less fortunate than yourself by purchasing some of these simple items. Laundry hampers are in the Gathering Space during the weekends of August 2, 9 & 16 for your donations.

Drivers Needed – Please sign up to deliver our parish food contributions to St. Anne’s Catholic Church (SA) or Brown Evangelical Mission (BEM) in Detroit, or Shared Harvest (Gleaners community Food Bank of Livingston) in Brighton Township. Weekly deliveries to Detroit are made on Sundays, after the 11 a.m. Mass; deliveries to Shared Harvest will be made during the week or on Saturday. The sign up schedule for the months of August through October will be in the Gathering Space. If you have questions or need to change your scheduled date of delivery, please call Marilyn Farrington 810-229-2871. The hungry of Detroit and Livingston thank you!

Does the food we bring in every week

really help???
