A CATHOLIC CATECHUMENATE Beginning this Tuesday, there will be a series of sessions similar to the Catechumenate for those who "grew up Catholic" but would like to really understand our faith from an adult perspective.
Each Tuesday evening session will begin with time to "ask the questions you've always wanted to ask." Then there will be a teaching on some aspect of our Faith and a chance for the group to reflect on it. The session will close with prayer.
Each session will run from 7:30 to 9 pm with either myself or one of the other staff members facilitating the session and providing the teaching. My goal in offering this Catholic Catechumenate, is to provide the "cradle Catholics" a genuine opportunity to grow in faith and understanding. In the closing weeks of Lent, the participants will also be joining our catechumens on their journey to the Easter Sacraments. By sharing in prayer and reflection with them, I am hoping that participants will also be able to really share in the experience of these folks.
I realize that participants may not be able to be a part of every session. But if you think you will be able to attend most sessions, please come. I am looking forward to this Catholic Catechumenate as a real opportunity for all of us - me included - to share and grow in our faith! OUR PARISH RETREAT Please make sure that you have February 6 - 9 marked on your calendar. That is when we will be having our first Parish Retreat. Fr. Rudy Papes, a priest of the Redemptorist Community, will be joining us to lead this retreat. For four evenings (Sunday through Wednesday) Fr. Rudy will help us reflect on our call to follow Christ and to share in the gift of His life.
I have shared the experience of a parish retreat with Fr. Rudy in another parish and can assure you that these four days will be an enjoyable and grace-filled event.
So please clear your calendar for our Parish Retreat. It will be well worth it! THE NEW YORK SYMPOSIUM was not quite what I had hoped it would be, but it was still worthwhile. It re-affirmed the real need to do some long range planning and the importance of a Vision to a community. I also enjoyed the chance to visit with my cousin and people from different dioceses from all over the United States.
All things considered, I am glad to be in Brighton - at Mary Magdalen, and a priest of the
Diocese of Lansing. As Dorothy said (in The Wizard of Oz) "There's no place like home!"

Dear Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalen,
Thank you to all the wonderful parishioners who donated food and time for Catherine's funeral
luncheon. I thought it was wonderful and appreciated it very much. Thanks again and God bless
you.

Mon., Jan. 17; St. Anthony, Abbot. Anthony or Antony, died in 356 at the age of 105. The life of Anthony was written by St. Athanasius shortly after the death of this hermit. This writing contributed to the conversion of many individuals, including St. Augustine and St. Martin. The dedication to Anthony is due to the fact that the "unbloody martyrdom" of his long life became a model and exemplar of the Christian's Journey to God. He is the patron of several orders of knights as well as the poor, the sick, swineherds, butchers, and domestic animals. Fri., Jan. 21; St. Agnes, Virgin, Martyr. Called Agnes of Romein on some lists and held in esteem by the Church since her death. There is no documented evidence about the martyrdom of Agnes, although her feast was assigned early and her grave near the Via Nomentana was recognized soon after her death. She was young when martyred; St. Ambrose stated that she was only twelve, and he testified about her death. On the feast of St. Agnes, two lambs are solemnly blessed. The wool from these lambs is formed into pallia (a liturgical vestment symbolizing the fullness of the office) and distributed to archbishops of the Church.
Dear Parishioners,
Thank you for all the gift certificates that you purchased for our senior Christmas project.
The certificates mean so much to the ones who receive them because it gives them a chance to get
a favorite - even essential - thing they otherwise could not afford. Your support in this endeavor is
very significant! THANKS again!
Sincerely, Darlene Fraley (LCCSS)

Preparations are underway for Spirit 2000, the theme for the all parish retreat February 6-9, here at St. Mary Magdalen. All other activities in the parish will be suspended so we can participate in these four special days of spiritual renewal. Fr. Rudy Papes, a Redemptorist missionary, will preaching at all the weekend Masses and then begin the retreat Sunday evening at 7:30. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there will be reflections in both the morning after the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy and a different presentation in the evening at 7:30. We will have refreshments, day-care and an opportunity to socialize after both sessions. Please mark your calendars for these four days in the life of our parish. If you would like to help the "E" Team or bring snacks to share on any of the retreat days, there are sign up sheets in the gathering area.
All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. WINTER FAMILY FUN DAY - Although the day didn't permit us to ice skate and create snowmen; all who participated in the indoor activities had a winter wonderful fun time. There were many games played, balloons tossed and popped, a video watched by several children and alot of laughter by everyone. The hot dogs, snacks, hot chocolate and COOKIES hit the spot. Most of all, the enjoyment of our family at St. Mary Magdalen coming together and getting to know each other. Thanks to the Community Life Committee and the Knights of Columbus for giving of your time and talents in making this a FUN DAY.

In response to our 24-hour food fast for Catholic Relief Services, we are planning our own Souper Bowl Sunday celebration. We will be running a canned food drive beginning next Sunday. There is a new addition to our Library and one that I recommend you check out. It is The Catholic Youth Bible. It was written by some of our very own youth leaders here in the Lansing Diocese. It is very well written and helps readers apply the scripture readings to their everyday life. You can purchase a Bible through me at $24 should you wish to have one of your own.
Call me at the office should you have any questions regarding anything mentioned above.
Friday, Jan. 21, we will be putt-putt golfing at Golf-O-Rama on Old US 23 from 7-9:30pm.
