CATCH THE SPIRIT!! By now you have "caught Fr. Rudy" as he shared with us the basic themes of the retreat which will unfold starting this (Sunday) evening. We made contact with Fr. Rudy almost two years ago as part of our parish preparation for the Holy Year of 2000. We chose this date in February despite the fact that the weather can be unpredictable, because I really view this event as something that will set the tone for the entire Jubilee Year.
I realize that some of you will be unable to participate in every evening (or morning) session. That's alright. Do whatever you can. Even though each session builds on the next, they cover the great themes of our faith so you will still be able to understand and benefit from whatever parts you are able to make. OUR NEXT EVENT Our facilities will have a day of rest on Thursday after we finish the retreat. Fr. Rudy will leave and the bed linen will be changed. Then Friday and Saturday, St. Mary Magdalen will be hosting a two day conference on Liturgy for the whole diocese.
On Friday, close to 100 priests, deacons, lay ministers and deacon and ministry candidates will be here to listen to Fr. John Melloh of Notre Dame. (Sorry, sports fans, but Notre Dame has one of the best Liturgy programs in the country.) He will be talking about leading the assembly in prayer. Then on Saturday, there will be over 300 for a second conference by Fr. Melloh on Music & Liturgy. NEXT SUNDAY we will celebrate three events.
At the 9 am Liturgy, we will have the commissioning of our BeFriender Ministers. These are men and women who serve as supportive companions to others who are going through difficult times. Those who have served in this ministry during the past year will re-commit themselves to another year of service. They will be joined by new members who have undergone the same 13 week training program.
I would ask you to keep them in your prayer, not just this weekend but throughout the coming year. These folks are living out their Confirmation commitment to service and the ministry they provide others is truly invaluable!
Our Scouts will be joining us for the 11 am Liturgy. They will serve as greeters and hospitality, gather the gifts and bring them to the altar. At the end of the Liturgy, we will honor them for their commitment to scouting and send them off with our blessing.
The other part of the 11 am Liturgy will be the Rite of Enrollment of our First Communicants. Through this brief ceremony, they begin their final preparation for first Eucharist. So they come to us asking for our prayer, support and blessing.
It is one of the things I like about being here at Magdalen. There's hardly anything happening
around here!
Fr. Dave Howell
Thu., Feb. 10; St. Scholastica The twin sister of St. Benedict of Nursia. Virtually nothing is known except a passage written about her by Pope St. Gregory the Great. At a young age, she dedicated herself to God and took up residence at a convent. Scholastica is considered the first Benedictine nun and is the patron saint of Benedictine nunneries. Fri., Feb. 11; Our Lady of Lourdes. Approved for the diocese of Tarbes, France, by Pope Leo XIII in 1890 to commemorate the first apparition at Lourdes. Later, in 1908, Pope Pius X included it in the Roman Calendar. The feast is based on the apparitions to Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879) at the grotto of Massabielle from Feb. 11 until July 16, 1858 (18 apparitions). The Blessed Virgin Mary identified herself as the Immaculate Conception and asked that a shrine be built there. The focal point of the feast is not the events at Lourdes, but the Immaculate Conception.
