All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

MANY THANKS to our ETeam (E for evangelization), musicians, liturgical ministers and all those who were a part of hosting our Parish Retreat! You did a wonderful job.

The first is the new series for adults: Learning to Pray the Scriptures. This new series will bring together two important aspects of our faith life (prayer & Scripture) so that participants might grow in a deeper communion with the Lord. The series starts this Sunday evening from 7:30 to 9 pm in the Adult Formation room.

The second opportunity to nurture what was gained through the retreat is called Follow Me. This is a Lenten series of reflections on what it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in the twenty first century.

Participants will meet in small groups in different homes through the six weeks of Lent. They will reflect on the Scriptures and their own faith over the season of Lent. There are several different times and locations for these gatherings and the sign up sheets will be out soon.

I hope that those who enjoyed the insights gained through the retreat will consider participating in either of these series.

FR. PETE DOUGHERTY will be with us next weekend. For as long as I have known him, Fr. Dougherty has been very dedicated to the Gospel values of non violence and peace. He will be preaching at the Liturgies next weekend and will invite us to join in a workshop on peacefilled living. I hope you will receive his message with open hearts and minds. It is truly another invitation of this Holy Year to live the Gospel more fully. You will forgive me if I take advantage of the opportunity of having another priest here for the weekend. Although I would like to hear Fr. Dougherty (a man whom I have really respected over the years), I am instead going to take advantage of the opportunity to take a week off. Fr. David Howell

LEARNING HOW TO PRAY THE SCRIPTURES

Deacon Dave Scharf will be facilitating this program for the next eight weeks from 79:30pm beginning Sunday, Feb. 13. Learn how to meditate and contemplate the great themes and stories of the Bible by using the methods of prayer drawn from St. Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises.

LOOK AT THE CALENDAR

Mon.,Feb.14;St.Cyril,monk & St.Methodius, bishop. These two brothers were proclaimed copatrons of Europe, by Pope John Paul II on December 31, 1980, the date of Cyril's death. They were born at Thessalonica, Greece, and became apostles to the Slav nations of Moravia, Bohemia and Bulgaria. Cyril was ordained a priest at Constantinople and taught philosophy there. Methodius became a monk after being governor of a Slav province. In 862 the two brothers were selected as missionaries by the prince of Moravia. They created a Slav alphabet and translated the Bible and the liturgy into the Slav language. St. Cyril died at Rome on Feb.14, 869 and is buried in the basilica of St. Clement. During the last 4 years of his life St.Methodius dedicated himself to the translation of the Bible and other works into Slavonic. He died April 6, 884 or 885.

ON THE JOURNEY

As I'm writing this article we are about midway through our parish retreat. What a moving, faith filled week! Fr. Rudy has given us so much to think about, hopefully a lot of us have caught the Spirit. Our challenge now is to keep it alive and well. One way is to join a "Follow Me!", small faith group for lent. If you haven't had an opportunity to sign up please check the gathering area. We've made every attempt to locate them in as many different directions as possible, so there should be one near you. Information on these groups or any of the adult ed offerings, please contact Marilyn 229-8624. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

GRIEF SUPPORT

Will be Sunday, February 20, in the lower level of the rectory. The meetings start at 7:30pm and are open to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one through death. Contact Marilyn for more information. For Your Good Health Blood Pressure Screening will be next weekend Feb. 19 & 20, as well as the "Education Station" for heart healthy living! Why not treat your sweethearts to a heart healthy dinner this St. Valentine's Day?! St. Peter bids us, "love one another deeply, from the heart." 1 Peter 1:22 Nutrition Class will be offered Tuesday, Feb. 22, at St. Patrick's, Brighton at 7pm. We have begun a collaborative effort with their Parish Nurse Ministry. The charge is $5.00, materials will be provided. To register call St. Pat's (810)229-9863.

Knights of Columbus Meeting Changed

The next K of C business meeting will be on Tuesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 5. Our council will be providing logistic support to the Parish Nurse Ministry in offering CPR training to parishioners. This will include registration, transportation of training aids and classroom assistance. Dates and times for training are Feb. 15 and 22, from 6-9:00pm.

Youth Group

Tonight Deb Clonnan will be teaching us the art of balloon making. Anyone interested in learning this skill is welcome to come. We hope to use this skill within the community to make children smile.

If you are interested in learning about the different world religions, then the next month of meetings are for you. John Shultz, a world religion teacher at Mercy High School, will be coming Feb. 20 & 27. He will be talking about Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and the Islamic religions. In March, our teen leaders will follow up with more information on each of the aforementioned religions by doing research on their own and then make presentations at regular meetings.

Annual Ski Trip is scheduled for March 10-12. If you are interested in attending this and are not active in the youth group we would like for you to attend meetings before we leave so we could get to know you. We meet every Sunday evening from 7-8:30.

M.U.D. NEWS

The next scheduled event is sponsored by the Diocese of Lansing. It is their Middle School Rally. It is an afternoon event full of music, worship, friendships and humor. The Rally will take place at Lansing Catholic Central on March 11. I encourage you to participate. Parents are encouraged to participate as well, not only to chaperon but to witness the excitement that the day will have to offer. There is a cost and a deadline for payments, so registration forms and the sign up sheet are available now in the gathering space. Please make checks payable to St. Mary Magdalen.
