All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

ENSURING A LEGACY If you have not already received it, you soon will be receiving a letter from Bishop Mengeling, inviting you to make a pledge or gift to to build a new Fr. Gabriel Richard High School. This new Catholic high school will be built 25 minutes south of us on property located just off US 23. So while the address reads Ann Arbor, it will be the closest Catholic high school to us - making this regional high school our local Catholic high school.

For the last two weeks, there have been special inserts in the bulletin explaining the school and what it will offer to our Catholic families for years to come. I invite you to seriously consider making a pledge or gift to this fund drive. In an age when people talk about the importance of investing for the future, I can think of no better investment either you or I could make to the future of our youth and our Catholic community. Please consider joining me in making a gift or pledge to Fr. Gabriel Richard High School. This new regional facility will make it possible for many more high school students to receive a Catholic education. Our pledge or gift will truly be a wonderful investment in the future of our youth. HUG A DEACON Belatedly I received a notice that last Sunday was designated as a day to recognize the service of our deacons in the Church.

I am certainly grateful for the ministry of Dave Scharf and his commitment to our parish and the whole Church. His willingness to take on any task, his eagerness to serve and his generous spirit have certainly been a real gift to our community.

I would like to suggest that if you are also grateful for his ministry among us that you let him know - a few words, a note, a card... HUG THEM ALL! While you are at it, perhaps those of you who have been touched by the ministry of the Three M's (Marilyn, Margaret and Sr. Maryetta) could let them know of your appreciation as well.

I certainly have found my life to be enriched by the dedicated service of these three women on our pastoral staff. Sr. Maryetta, Marilyn and Margaret truly have a "shepherd's heart" (the literal meaning of pastor) in their care and concern for the little ones, the lost and the forgotten. I know that I have never worked with three more talented and gifted women.

LOOK AT THE CALENDAR

St. Valentine, priest, physician, martyr. On February 14 we celebrated the feast of Sts. Cyril and Methodius and not St. Valentine. This week we do not have a memorial or feast day to celebrate, so I thought St. Valentine would be a good one to fill in with. He was executed on February 14, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, probably by beheading, and was buried on the Via Flaminia. In 350 a basilica was erected on the spot of his burial. Another Valentine (sharing the same feast day) was bishop of Terni. Considered possibly to be the same person, he was supposedly flogged, taken to Rome, and beheaded. On their feast day is celebrated the custom of sending "Valentines" to a loved one; the custom stems from the medieval belief that birds choose their mates on this day. Valentine is thus the patron saint of lovers.

Special Day for Families

Do you sometimes feel your family members are all going in different directions? We have planned a day of togetherness beginning with Mass, ending with pizza, and filled with interesting sessions during the day. Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 26.

Religious Education

We went to the synagogue with the sixth grade students and their families. It was a wonderful experience and we learned a great deal about our roots. Please continue to pray for the children who will be receiving First Penance in March and the children who will be receiving First Eucharist.

ON THE JOURNEY

If you haven't had an opportunity to sign up for one of the Follow Me groups, please check the gathering area for times and places. Our lenten small faith communities provide an opportunity to meet with other parishioners in an informal setting to discuss the readings for the upcoming weekend and the impact they have for us. We've made every attempt to locate them in as many different directions as possible, so there should be one near you.

Beginning Thursday, March 9, at 10:00 a.m. our Scripture Study will focus on the Resurrection and Passion Narratives. May this hour and a half reflection on the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ bring a more meaningful dimension to our lenten experience. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

Youth Group

Again, tonight John Shultz will be coming to talk about Judaism and the Islam religions. Anyone interested is welcome to come. Please note the meeting will last until 9pm.

SKI TRIP if you are participating in this trip your money and permission slip have to be returned by March 5. I am pleased to say that I have made arrangements for our youth to meet local youth from Harbor Springs and the surrounding area. Saturday evening we will all go to Mass, then everyone will participate in open skating with the other teens. I would like to develop a rapport with them and plan future events.

I have also been in contact with the youth leader from St. Anne's church in Detroit. I met him the weekend of our Souper Bowl Sunday project. We have made tentative arrangements to visit with his youth Friday, March 17. The community is very much Hispanic/Inner city. I feel this would be a great way to meet and learn about their culture and for them to learn from us, perhaps break some of the barriers and stereotypes each group has about being inner city and suburbanites. Any Sr. High youth is welcome to come and participate in that meeting. Again, it is my hope to develop a friendship amongst the teens.

Small Group Reflection, Thursday, March 9, Kathy Rigley will be facilitating this group for the season of Lent. We will meet in the youth room from 7-8:30 for 4 consecutive Thursdays.
