ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
A DESERT CALLED LENT
Few of us have ever been in the desert and even fewer of us have spent any length of time in a desert. Those who have often describe the experience in terms of a growing awareness.First, one becomes aware of how utterly alone he\she is; then the person becomes very aware of the sounds and the life that is around them. And usually she\he becomes very aware of his\her self.
During Lent, we are invited to create some sort of desert for ourselves. We are challenged to simplify our lives in some way: by fasting from food or noise or distractions, etc. By creating this desert for ourselves, we create a place where each of us can go no matter how briefly to grow in awareness of God, others and myself.
This growing awareness of God, should lead me to prayer and a deeper relationship with the Lord. I should become more aware of Gods grace in my life and what God is calling me to do.
The growing awareness of others should lead me to reach out in love to those around me. I should also become more aware of those in need.
The growing awareness of myself should lead me to a deeper understanding of the attitudes that motivate my actions (or inaction).
SACRAMENT of PENANCE
As a person becomes more aware of him\her self during Lent, frequently, there is also a greater awareness of my faults and failings. That is why the Sacrament of Penance is so closely associated with Lent. It is through this Sacrament, I seek not only forgiveness for the sins and failings of my life; I seek healing.Like the Sacrament of the Sick, which seeks healing for the body suffering from disease; the Sacrament of Penance seeks the healing for the causes of dis-ease of my spirit: the attitudes, desires and motives that are the root of sin in our lives. I bring those to a priest and ask not only for absolution (forgiveness) but, for a penance: some combination of prayer & actions that help me live better the way of Christ. (In many ways, the confessor is like a doctor who recommends the therapy needed for the penitent to grow stronger.)
EXTENDED TIME
During Lent, the individual celebration of Penance is from 11 am until 12 Noon each Saturday. There will also be several Communal Penance services in our region starting the third week of Lent.Fr. Dave Howell

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT
Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18
Events in todays reading took place approximately 1800 years before Christ. In that pagan culture, child sacrifice was common. Thats why Abraham believed God wanted him to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Later generations constantly looked back to this event as an example of Abrahams great faith.
Romans 8:31b-34
Todays reading is part of a hymn that celebrates Gods love and which concludes the eighth chapter of Pauls letter to the Romans. In our first reading, we heard how God spared Abrahams only son; in this passage we will hear how, out of love for us, God did not spare His only son.
Mark 9:2-10
On the Second Sunday of Lent we always hear the story of the transfiguration. Mark is concerned with the true identity and mission of Jesus. He is also concerned with mistaken notions about Jesus. His resolution comes only at the end of the story but is hinted at in every scene.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK
The waters of Baptism make us part of the new covenant in Christ. But the bishops pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us that "there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism that people place their gifts, their resources their selves at Gods service in and through the Church."
Sacrificial Giving
presently we have 945 families registered in the parish and 568 families have made their stewardship commitment, which is 60%. For those who are interested in the teaching and theology of the early Church, we have a recent addition entitled Touching the Risen Christ; Wisdom from The Fathers. This collection of brief writings and homilies from the bishops of the early Church provides a variety of reading for study and meditation. As we approach Easter, it seems particularly appropriate with chapter titles such as: Repentance and Mercy, The Cross of Christ, The Risen Christ and The Eucharist, among others. It can be found among the books on theology at 230. Another collection of essays, this by a single scholar, C.S. Lewis, is also suitable for meditation, again, at 230.
The Spirit of God has gifted us with faith. It is up to us to nurture that gift. Participating in Faith Explosion is an exciting way to grow stronger in your faith. Be there, youth and young adults, to share in the spirit that gives us hope, love and peace. Have a stimulating and fun experience with our sisters and brothers who have been baptized in one faith. For more information or to register, contact me in the parish offices.
If you are attending NRN this summer, there is a meeting Monday March 10 at 7:30 pm and if you are participating in NCYC come November, there is a meeting Tuesday March 11 also at 7:30 pm. It will prove to be a busy week for many.
Our Spud night will be March 29 beginning after the 4:30 pm liturgy. The group participating in NRN will be sponsoring this evening and all proceeds will go toward their trip. Come and see what NRN is all about, as the youth who went last year will tell.
