ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

LENT & THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE As we move through the season of Lent, our prayer, penance and self scrutiny should lead us to repentance. This repentance is what we celebrate in the Sacrament of Penance. Over the next week, there will be five opportunities to celebrate this repentance at different parishes throughout the county. Five Communal Penance Services will provide us with the chance to reflect on our lives and respond to the Lord's gift of mercy.

The schedule for these Communal Services is:
Sun, April 9 at 3 pm - St. John on M-59 & Hacker Rd.
Tues, April 11 at 7:30 pm - Holy Spirit, Hamburg
Wed, April 12 at 7:30 pm - St Mary in Pinckney
Sat, April 15 at 9 am - St Patrick, Brighton
Mon, April 17 at 7:30 pm here at St Mary Magdalen

I hope you will take advantage of one of these services as a way to truly open your life to the gift of Easter: the peace of the risen Lord. THE WONDER OF HOLY WEEK Next weekend we enter into a time unlike any other during the entire year: we enter into two weeks of sacred time. Even the ritual of the Liturgies will make that clear, for we will "act out" aspects of the Gospel in ways that are very different from the rest of the year.

Beginning next weekend, we will leave Brighton and, with the rest of the Church, enter Jerusalem through the power of Liturgy. We will gather outside (weather permitting) with palm branches in hand and process together into the worship area, celebrating the Lord's triumphal entrance into the holy city. But it was there that He entered into the final effort of our salvation, which we will witness as we hear of and celebrate the death of the Lord through Word and Sacrament.

On Holy Thursday, our worship area becomes the upper room where we gather with the Lord to celebrate His Last Supper. We commemorate how He washed the feet of His disciples and then went out into the garden to pray. Our chapel will be transformed into that garden and we are invited to "watch and pray" with the Lord until midnight, the hour of His arrest.

On Good Friday, our worship area is transformed into Calvary and the tomb. Stripped and barren, the bleakness provides a fitting setting to hear and witness the death of the Lord (even more moving as our youth act out the Passion story).

On Holy Saturday evening, we begin the celebration of Easter, with the first and most important celebration of the resurrection. Our worship area is dark, like the interior of the tomb. Again, we gather outside to light a fire, whose flame will be carried into the worship area as the first announcement of the resurrection.

Using the Scriptures, we will hear the promise that God will re-create us in the divine image. Then comes the second announcement of the resurrection: the Glory to God. (Traditionally, everyone is invited to ring hand bells throughout the Gloria as a way to welcome the resurrection.) Finally, we will sing the Alleluia (not heard since the start of Lent) and hear the Good News of Christ rising from the dead - the first of all who will rise with him.

ON THE JOURNEY

Seder 2000

\Reclaiming our Jewish roots is an important part of our understanding of Christ's life and passion. Each year we as a parish family celebrate a Seder meal during Holy Week. This Seder is a combination of specific Jewish prayers, ritual foods and reflection on Israel's liberation from the enslavement in Egypt called the Passover.

Sign up sheets are in the gathering area for this year's Seder on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. Bring your family and a dish to pass. If you are available to help set up or bake bread at 10:00 a.m. the day before or would just like more information, call Kathy LaTarte 227-7994.

We are also looking for donations of empty Paul Masson wine carafes for use that night; if you have any, please leave them in the box provided in the gathering area. We are limited to 250 for the dinner, so please register early. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

Do you like the way you were "WELCOMED" into the Parish? The Welcoming Ministry Team needs a few good people who are willing to meet new people and share the vision of the parish with others (training will be provided). Some of the welcoming team members have helped in this ministry for the past five years. So please consider becoming a member of the Welcoming Ministry Team. Contact Deacon Dave (810) 229-8624 if you are interested.

VG's RECEIPTS

The Charity & Justice Ministry Team continues to ask you to save your VG's receipts and return them in the container provided in the Gathering Area. Through these receipts organizations can collect 1% of the receipt total. These funds will be used to help those in need within our parish.

Youth Group

Little Baruch Zebediah, also known as Jack Thomas, is the latest member of the youth group. All of the youth group members would like to congratulate Tom & Margaret. We are very excited for them, wish them the best, and are anxiously awaiting Tom and Margaret's full return to the youth group.

The youth who went to St. Anne's Church in Detroit this past Friday had a great time. They met with the youth group and learned about the Latino culture. The two youth groups also went on a tour of the church and talked about stereotypes that each group faces. We are very excited to set a date for the St. Anne's youth group to come visit us.

At the next couple of meetings Kimber and Dave will be briefly presenting on Easter and Lent. These meetings should be very enlightening and eventful. We will also be stuffing eggs for the upcoming Easter Egg Hunt.

Mark your calendars for April 28, 29 and 30, the dates of the Youth Retreat. Please turn in your permission slips and $20 as soon as possible to the parish office. The retreat should be a very fun and uplifting event.

Until next week, be careful and God bless.

ST. PATRICK SCHOOL is accepting enrollment for all new first graders on May 1 and 2 between 8:30 and 3:00 in the school office. Brothers and sisters of currently enrolled students will be accepted first and new family student registrations will be processed according to the date of the family's registration at St. Pat's/St. Mary Magdalen and in accordance with the school admissions policy. Last year everyone was accepted. New first graders will be invited to visit St. Pat's Thursday, June 3, from 9:30 to 11:00am, and a parent meeting will be held that evening at 6:30pm in the gym.
