WELCOME TO JERUSALEM
The Liturgies of Holy Week are like no other during the Church year. Originating in Jerusalem, near the end of the second century, they help to re-create the experience of the Lords passion, death & resurrection. These rituals entered the Roman Liturgy over the next century.Beginning with today, Passion (Palm) Sunday, we leave Brighton Township and travel through time and space. For the next two weeks we are in Jerusalem. We are part of the crowd that greets the Lord with waving palm branches and then demands his death.
On Holy Thursday we begin the Passover of Christ and the church becomes the upper room. We sit with the apostles around the Last Supper table and then go with the Lord to the garden to pray.
On Good Friday we witness the mockery of a trial, cowardly behavior and then we come to the foot of the cross.
On Holy Saturday night, we come back to the tomb (the dark and empty church) and we witness the resurrection.
Truly, these are the most wonderful and glorious days of the whole year. Those of you who have participated in the past know what I mean. Those who have never participated -- you have my sympathy!!! You have been deprived of the best the Church has to offer.
Be a participant at the Liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday and find out what I mean!!

EASTER SUNDAY
Acts of the Apostles 10: 34, 37-43
"Jesus went about doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him." The battle between good and evil is one of the most prevailing themes in all of literature, not to mention the Bible. This is because it is so central to our human condition. Jesus chose to do Gods will rather than His own.
Colossians 3: 1-4
We are reminded once more that what is of this wonderful earth is passing away. What will survive love, beauty, joy, peace, kindness, charity is what we were born for and what we will rise again into. We are to die to all the rest.
John 20: 1-9
Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb, but the other disciple arrived there first. Perhaps the real contest of Easter is not who gets there first but instead between those who go to the tomb and struggle to comprehend its meaning and those who dont make the journey at all. The only way to encounter a miracle is to stand in its presence.

What a great way to welcome the newest members of our Catholic faith! If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Oliver at 810-266-4849Every Holy Thursday evening the teens participate in an overnight retreat called "Walk With Jesus". We begin with an hour of adoration in the chapel beginning at 11pm. We then begin reflecting at 1am in the rectory basement about the events that take place that evening. We end our reflections at 4am at which point we will stuff easter eggs and just hang out together until 7am. It is a wonderful evening, and a great opportunity for us to be together in Gods name to really focus on what Jesus did for us. You are welcome to join us. The leadership team each takes an hour and leads us through questions and discussion.
I want to thank Richard Switzer for his time and talent working with the teens who dedicated every Sunday afternoon during Lent to practice for the passion play for this Good Friday Service. What a great way have spent Lent practicing for our Lords Passion. Thank you to them all!

Come to begin your journey or to add an artistic dimension to your experience. Sr. Maryetta will facilitate this workshop. Please call her for further information. (810) 229-8624BLESSING OF EASTER FOOD
In earlier times, Christians would celebrate Easter with communal feasts. As we grew in numbers, it was harder to celebrate all together, so Catholics would bring baskets filled with their special Easter meal to church for a common blessing. The first meal eaten on Easter morning will be these blessed foods. This breaks the fasting and abstinence of the six weeks of Lent. We will bless Easter Food on Holy Saturday, April 19, at 2:00 pm in Holy Cross Chapel. Some examples of Easter food:
The Easter Egg symbolizes new life and for Catholics and Christians re-birth. Eggs were forbidden during Lent, and so eggs gathered during that time were boiled and saved until Easter. They were decorated to represent a joyous revitalization and are symbolic of the tomb from which our Lord burst the bonds of death.
Kielbasa, Ham or Pork, expressly forbidden under the covenant of the Old Testament, represents the new replacing the old since Jesus came to fulfill and exceed the law, making these formerly forbidden dietary items now acceptable.
Horseradish and/or Pepper symbolize the bitter herbs of the Passover and the Exodus, signifying the bitterness of spiritual exile, the bitterness of the sufferings of Jesus, and a reflection upon our human sufferings.
Salt, used as a commodity, a medium of exchange, barter in trade throughout history, is the most fundamental of all spices and preservatives. It reminds us that as a result of our baptism in Christ, we are, by His words, the "salt of the earth".
Bread, symbolizes the bread of the Eucharistic Meal and declares that Christ is known to us in "the breaking of the bread" as He was to the disciples at Emmaus.
Paschal Lamb Butter The lamb is central to the Catholic/Christian faith. Christ is referred to as the Lamb of God, or the lamb being led to the slaughter. Our Lord proclaimed, "I am the Good Shepherd". The lamb is often featured carrying a red banner imprinted with a cross. The sacrificial animal of ancient times is now portrayed as Christ victorious.
Wine, is often added to the menu, reminding us of the blood of the sacrifice, which Christ spilled for us on Calvary.
