ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

ALLELUIA In case you missed it, Alleluia is the word of the day — the week — the season! It is an ancient Hebrew word meaning "Praise be to Yahweh! (Yahweh is the name of God.) It was the word that was used to celebrate God’s victory. In the Christian tradition, it is the "Easter" word, for there is no greater victory of God than the one we celebrate today: the resurrection of Christ!

EASTER WEEK Today we also begin the holiest week of the year: Easter Week. In fact, it is so important that it is a "week of Sundays"! For eight days, we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, so each day is called Easter (Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, etc.).

The purpose of this is simple: the resurrection of Christ and what that means for us is so important, that we hope that by celebrating it for eight days we can begin to truly understand what it means for us and for the world.

In ancient times, those baptized and received into the Church at the Easter Vigil would wear their white garment, their Baptismal robe, all week long. They would also be the special guests at the Liturgies of Easter Week.

It is my hope that those who were joined to us at Easter will be able to participate in some of the Easter Week Liturgies, especially the evening Liturgy of Easter Wednesday (at 7 pm). I also hope that we will be able to join them — at the table of the Lord!

SPECIAL THANKS I would like to especially thank all of those who were a part of the Liturgies of the Triduum (the three days: Holy Thursday, Good Friday & Holy Saturday).

Both Diane Kubus and Steve Schulte spent long hours preparing for these services, and served us so wonderfully throughout the Liturgies.

We are very grateful for all of our Liturgical Singers and Musicians who spend so much time practicing to lead us in the sung prayer of the Liturgy! What a gift!!

Richard Switzer and our youth did a terrific job in making the Passion of Good Friday so moving. We are all grateful for the long hours spent in memorizing the Gospel of John and rehearsing the re-enactment for us.

Finally, many thanks to all those who prepared and hosted our Seder meal, to those who made our worship environment so beautiful and to those who served as Liturgical ministers!

Have a wonderful EASTER Week!!!

Fr. Dave Howell

SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER

Acts: 4:32-35

Luke wrote a two-volume work: Volume One is his Gospel; Volume Two is the Acts of the Apostles which describes the life of the Church after the Resurrection of Jesus. Every year, during the seven weeks of the Easter season, the first reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. In today’s passage, Luke gives an idealized description of early Christian community life.

1John 5: 1-6

Today and for the remaining Sundays of the Easter season, our second reading will be taken from the first letter of John. It was written about 100 AD, one of the last New Testament books to be composed. This letter was written in the tradition of the apostle John and bears his name. Today’s passage from near the end of this brief letter treats the fundamentals of Christian life: faith, love and the commandments.

John 20: 19-31

We might think Thomas was one of the favored ones invited to put his finger into the nail marks and explore the wound in Jesus’ side. We have the opportunity every day to look at, get close to, and explore the wounds of our neighbors and the hurt of those mortally injured by the injustice around us. These wounds are waiting the healing and redemption Jesus promised. One day these wounds too will be glorified.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

Alleluia! Christ is risen and is victorious over sin and death! We are good stewards of our faith, if, like St. Paul, we share this good news whenever and wherever we can.

At Easter Vigil

15 Celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation

We shared the excitement of four catechumens as they stepped into the baptismal font. They were: Carol Lally, Donald Monroe, Sarah Poliquin and David Small. They were joined by Patrick Duncan, Kimberly Duncan, Courtney Grant, Eric Poisson, Melissa Poisson, Larry LaTarte, George Smith, Lori Sproull, Gordon Sproull, Robert Stecewicz and Alexandra Weston as they completed the Sacraments of Initiation.

These 15 are an outward sign of the continuing renewal of our Church. We would like to congratulate them and their families, while we continue to offer them our prayers and support. We extend a special thank you to each of their sponsors for their commitment and willingness to share their faith.

They, who represented us, the community, over the past year are: Debbie Barker, John Bennington, Dynetta Cadaret, Pam Curcuru, Ben Evans, Derek Hogland, Joe Hommel, Cathy Kolpacki, Diane Lickfold, Ray Lickfold, Patricia McRae, Jim Panning, Donna Price, Ed Prise and George Schultz.

James Chevalier from this parish is scheduled to be ordained as a permanent Deacon on May 10, 2003 for service to the Diocese of Lansing. Anyone knowing a serious reason which impedes his ordination should make this known to Deacon William Sirl, Director of Permanent Deacons, Diocese of Lansing, 300 West Ottawa, Lansing, MI 48933, no later than May 5, 2003.

Her role as Director of Environmental Health at the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor has taken her to more than fifty communities around the state, primarily low income, working on reducing toxic sources and addressing environmental health concerns. "Every person has a stake in environmental public health, and as environments deteriorate, so does the physical and mental health of the people who live in them," says Dr. Jackson. Come and learn from Ms. Easthope some of the issues so that each of us may be more informed on this important subject. For further information or questions call 517-546-7053.
