ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
DSA 2003
The Diocesan Services Appeal is an annual collection that supports over 75 different services offered by our larger, diocesan Church. These range from the offices of education, social service agencies, support for prison ministries, campus ministry, migrant ministries, evangelization and many more. Our support makes it possible for the "Catholic Church" (you & I) to more effectively witness to the resurrection.
LOCAL SUPPORT for LOCAL MINSTRY
Over the past 18 months, there have been many news articles about money paid out to the victims of sexual abuse by priests. In some cases these amounts have been rather large. Even worse, Church money has been used to keep these abuses secret. In our diocese, there have been very few abuse cases over the years. The offending priests have been removed and, when possible, turned over to civil authorities for prosecution. An insurance fund has paid for the services needed to help victims heal the pain the abuse has caused. None of the money donated to DSA has ever been used in these situations and none of DSA money leaves our area.
All of the money we donate to DSA remains in our diocese to support a wide variety of services. The largest single area of support is education and formation of seminarians, priests, deacons and pastoral ministers.
FIRST COMMUNION
Next weekend we will celebrate a special event in our parish: the reception of Eucharist for the first time by almost 80 of our younger sisters and brothers. They have been very busy preparing for most of this past year. They have been waiting for this day with great excitement even longer.
I invite you to keep them in your prayer and to share their enthusiasm in receiving this Easter Sacrament of the risen Lord! (There will be a group of first Communicants at each of our three Liturgies next weekend.)
A NEW DEACON
In just two weeks, Bishop Mengeling will ordain seven men to the order of deacon. Among these is our own Jim Chevalier.Everyone is welcome to attend the Ordination Liturgy at St. Mary Cathedral on Saturday, May 10 at 10 am. The cathedral is located one block north of the state capitol building in downtown Lansing.
Jim will function as a deacon during the Liturgies of that same weekend, so you will have the opportunity to congratulate him then!

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
Acts: 3:13-15, 17-19
Chapter three of Acts describes how Peter and John healed a lame man who sat begging each day at the gate of the temple. The people were astonished at this miracle. Peter used the opportunity to give a sermon encouraging the people to believe in Jesus. We hear a portion of this sermon in todays passage.
1John 2: 1-5
The first letter of John was written for the community from which the fourth gospel emerged. At the time, this community was seriously divided. Some members believed that as long as you had faith in Jesus, it didnt matter what you did in daily life. The passage today refutes that opinion.
Luke 24: 35-48
This passage is Lukes last recorded instance of Jesus appearing to the disciples after the resurrection. Now that sin and death have been conquered, Jesus instructs them of the implications of His resurrection. Jesus died for love of us. If we believe we are loved, we will do everything we can to love in return by showing our love and concern for all Gods loved, redeemed creatures. We will become Christians.

Hope for the Earth
In todays world of miracle drugs, miraculous transplants, and amazing surgeries, we also contend with unsafe environments, chemical contamination, and questionable health care. Everything from the pesticides that we use in our yards and gardens to the cleaning products we need in our homes, to the chemicals that might be used at our places of employment. All of these issues fall into the topic of environmental health.
Tracey Easthope has worked at the Ecology Center in Ann Arbor since 1989 and currently serves as the Centers Director of the Environmental Health Project. She also is co-founder of Health Care Without Harm.
Tracey will be the featured speaker at the fourth workshop in our series on environmental issues. She will share her many years of experience working with many of these problem areas The workshop will be hosted by Saint Patrick Catholic Church, Brighton on April 27, from 6-8pm.

If you are interested, you may call Carol McGrath at 517-5467-7053 or sign up after the Masses on April 27.On Earth Day, April 22, the Sisters of the IHM community were hosts to the press at their recently renovated Motherhouse. The results are one of the largest sustainable projects in the Midwest. The Sisters have been transformed by the project and wish now to share their experience with others.
