04-30-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL St. Mary Magdalen Parish is one of 95 parishes that comprises the Roman Catholic Church in south central Michigan, called the Diocese of Lansing. The chief pastor of the diocese is Bishop Carl Mengeling who, in turn, assigned me here to fulfill his pastoral responsibilities. Through the diocese we receive a wide variety of services that enable us to do a better job of serving the people of God. Each year, shortly after Easter, all the parishes throughout our diocese conduct the annual Diocesan Services fund drive. The money raised by the pledges and gifts from this drive supports the many services, which no parish could provide on its own. This year the DSA appeal actually begins later than usual, but because of several events taking place in May, we are starting it a week earlier than in the past. Our parish goal this year is $64,818, so I hope you will be generous in your support. SPRING CLEAN UP Another part of our parish life is our annual spring clean up. There are branches to to be picked up, flower beds to be prepared, some leaves to be raked, stones to be replaced and new mulch to be put down. It has been said that "Many hands make light work". So I hope that many will sign up for this annual event scheduled for Saturday, May 13. With enough help, most of the work is completed in 3-4 hours. Please sign up if you can help! SHARING OUR GIFTS Those who were Baptized, Confirmed and joined us in the Eucharist on Holy Saturday are now in the process of discernment about their future called: Mystagogia. They spend the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost reflecting on what God has done in their lives and on how they might share these blessings with others. This discernment is not limited to these neophytes (new members) alone - all of us are invited to do the same thing. In two weeks, the various ministry teams will begin sharing with you about their particular ministry. Please give some consideration to your own gifts, talents and interests. As you listen to them and read about their ministry in the bulletin, give some prayerful consideration to the blending of your talents with these ministries. On Pentecost (June 10/11) everyone will be invited to sign up for or
renew their service on one of our various ministry teams. Please give
it some thought and prayer! Fr. Dave Howell THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFIRMATION The Sacrament of Confirmation completes our initiation into the Catholic Church. Adults who are not yet Confirmed, are invited to participate in an area-wide Adult Confirmation Program during the Easter Season. Six Thursday evening sessions will lead up to the celebration of Confirmation here in our own parish on Pentecost Sunday, June 11. The sessions will take place at St. Joseph Parish in Howell, beginning on May 4 (7:30 to 9:00pm). For more information and/or to register call our parish office at 229-8624. in their lives. The children brought home a loaf of bread to share and
break with their families. We continue to pray for the children who will
be receiving the sacrament next weekend. Do not forget Journey with Jesus
and also the Women's retreat that are coming up! Sr. Maryetta ON THE JOURNEY Thursday Morning Scripture Study begins May 11 at 10:00 a.m. We will be traveling with St. Paul as we visit the places (via video) and meet some of the people (via scripture) that were important in his life. Sign up sheets for this somewhat unusual study are available in the gathering area. The St. Mary Magdalen Retirees will be meeting Monday, May 15 at 12:15 p.m. Monique and Joe Weis will be showing slides and sharing some their recent experiences in the mission fields. Please join us, bring a bag lunch. We will be gathering in the Adult Formation Room. Dessert and coffee will be provided. In 1988, the Church mandated the implementation of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. At the time, very few of us were probably even aware of the change, let alone how it would affect us. Today many more have begun to realize the difference between instruction and conversion. In the old days of "Father Smith Instructs Jackson", very few parishioners were aware that anyone was preparing to come into the Church. Both the instruction and the celebration were done privately. The involvement and responsibility of the community were negligible. That was not the case this past Easter Vigil - as each of our six catechumens stepped into the baptismal water, you could feel the involvement and love of the community and it continued on as the remaining six candidates completed their Sacraments of Initiation. Their presence and rebirth was felt and shared by all. We were all blessed. Yours on the journey, Marilyn Youth Group I would like to thank all of you who helped me with my scheduled events this past month while I was gone. Without the support of people in the community, our program would not be what it is. I would also like to brag about our leadership team who did a wonderful job taking over and planning for our weekly meetings. Tom and I are proud of the work they do. Thank you also for all those who were involved with the planning and executing of the Easter Egg Hunt last weekend. It was a great time. We are putting together a team for the Relay for Life Cancer walk scheduled for May 19 & 20. If you are interested in being a part of the team, please call Margaret Callaghan at 227-7937. Sunday, May 21, we will be having a bake sale in the gathering area between the 9 & 11am Masses. Anyone interested in donating baked goods is encouraged to do so. We will be collecting the goods before 9am Mass. Tom and I hope that everyone had a wonderful Easter celebration with your families, as well as a safe and relaxing Spring break. I will return to work this Tuesday with a little more than just my planner in hand. Jack, or as some know him, Baruch, will be accompanying me to the offices, on good days. I have to say that it has been a wonderful six weeks being at home with Jack, and I know getting back to work will have its challenges. M.U.D. NEWS We will be having a movie and game night on Friday, May 12, from 7-9:30pm. Sign-up sheets will be out next weekend, and parent chaperons are needed. Margaret Callaghan Thank You Thank you to all those who donated candy for the Easter Egg Hunt. It was a huge success. We stuffed 2150 eggs for approximately 350 children to scramble for. Fun was had by all in attendance. A special thanks also for those who helped with the set-up, clean-up, and the events activities.
