ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY I am sure that a number of carefully crafted cards and gifts will be given by little hands this weekend. These treasures, along with fancy Hallmark cards and more expensive gifts, are only tokens of love and thanks. It is my sincere hope and prayer that our moms will experience this love and gratitude all year long! LOOKING FOR BUILDERS This weekend we begin our search for people who are willing to share their gifts and talents with our community through a variety of ministries.

Over the next few weeks, we will hear members of the different Ministry Teams briefly explain the work they do at the end of the Liturgy. There will also be an additional explanation of their ministry in the bulletin.

The purpose is to offer you the chance to reflect on the work of these different teams and your own gifts. By matching people's talents and interests, we hope to create leadership groups that will enable our parish to build the kingdom of God.

Beginning Pentecost Sunday, you will be invited to make a one year commitment to serve on one of these teams. Certainly people are invited to renew their commitment for another year, but people are asked to sign up for only one year at a time.

As you hear and read about the different teams, I would ask that you give some thought and prayer to your own involvement in our parish.

This is the same kind of discernment the newly Baptized and Confirmed members of our community (the neophytes) are going through. All over the world, these new ones are asking themselves how they might help to spread the Gospel and deepen their commitment through service. LOOKING FOR VISION KEEPERS Elsewhere in the bulletin, you will find an article from Barb Lanigan, the chair of our Parish Pastoral Council. The article is an invitation for you to consider making a three year commitment to serve on our Pastoral Council.

As Catholics, we believe that the Church is governed and led by the Holy Spirit. That is what we say each weekend in the Creed.

Pastoral Councils are a real expression of that belief. A Council is a group of Confirmed parishioners who meet with the pastor to discern how we can bring together the work of many ministries to build the Kingdom of God here in Brighton Township. This discernment occurs through a process of listening and speaking. So a person who is going to serve on the Council first needs to be a Listener: someone who will listen to our people, to the local civic community, to the larger Church and to the Lord. Secondly, a council member needs to be a Speaker: someone who says clearly and honestly what they have heard.

Through this process, we discover the ways in which our parish can more faithfully proclaim the good news of the Kingdom and the ways in which we can work to make the vision of that kingdom real to those around us.

Please prayerfully consider Barb's invitation to join our Pastoral Council.

Fr. Dave Howell

ON THE JOURNEY

As the trip maps come out for summer and plans are being made for vacations, it is a great time to add some special detours along the way. I can remember getting some flack from the family several years ago when I added the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to our agenda in Washington, D.C., but once we were inside, an awe replaced their reluctance. Besides its beauty, it provided an opportunity to see Mary in many different ethnic settings. The universality of the Church became real as we joined other visitors from all over the world at the various altars.

The May/June issue of Faith Magazine has several pages dedicated to spiritual sites here in Michigan. If you haven't read it or missed your copy, there are more in the pamphlet rack.

Yours on the journey,
Marilyn

Wanted: Visionaries

During the next several weeks, Pastoral Council members will be in the Hospitality area to answer questions regarding the ministry of the Council. Unlike other ministries for which we can volunteer, Pastoral Council members are elected by drawing from those who are nominated.

It is the responsibility of the members to coordinate parish activities, see that we are fulfilling our mission, and, most importantly, look to the future vision of St. Mary Magdalen. Meetings include an evening and morning of goal setting (August 25 & 26, 2000) monthly meetings of Pastoral Council on the third Wednesday, and a monthly meeting as the assigned liaison to a ministry team. Qualifications include a desire to critique current programs and to address the future of our parish.

We hope you will prayerfully consider this opportunity to serve. It is both a joy and a challenge to participate in this ministry which allows one to view the entire parish activities and work closely with Fr. Dave to maintain the wonderful community we now experience.

Youth Group

There aren't any more meetings for this month. This weekend is Mother's Day; so instead of meeting, we wish for you to spend the day with your family. Enjoy each other's company and treasure the time together.

If you are still interested in joining our Relay for Life Team and have not yet done so, this is the last week to sign up. Please call Margaret Callaghan at the parish offices.

Sunday, May 21, we will be having a bake sale in the gathering space between the 9 & 11am Masses. It is our goal this year to have enough baked goods to continue to sell after the 11am Mass as well. So any and all donations will be appreciated. Proceeds will go to help the 10 teens going to Chicago this summer. We will be collecting the goods before 9am Mass.

I would like to thank Angela Shoonmorrow from LACASA who came and talked with us last week about domestic and dating violence. We talked about what to look for in a dangerous relationship and were given information about who we could talk to if the need every came up. We thank her for her time.

The annual Cedar Pointe trip is just around the corner. We will be traveling south to Sandusky, Ohio, Wednesday June 21. Please keep an eye on the bulletin these next few weeks for more details.

Sunday, June 4, we will be celebrating the the graduation class of 2000. They will all be recognized at the 9am Mass. Following the Mass will be a graduation breakfast in the social hall. A sign up sheet for the seniors and their families will be in the gathering space.

M.U.D. NEWS

I am making arrangements with Livingston Community Food Bank to donate some time to help sort food. More details will come soon.

We will begin planning next year's agenda and would appreciate any input from both parents and M.U.D participants. Please call me with any suggestions at the parish offices.

ORDINATION TO THE PERMANENT DIACONATE

The Most Reverend Carl F. Mengeling and the People of God of the Diocese of Lansing invite your presence and prayer to celebrate the Ordination of our brothers to the Order of Deacon on Saturday, May 20, 2000, at ten o'clock in the morning at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, East Lansing. The twenty candidates to be ordained and their wives continue to prepare for the ordination.

All people in the Diocese of Lansing are asked to keep these men, their wives and families in prayer as they undergo final preparations for Ordination.

From the Greenery

I would like to thank the Pastor and all of the parishioners for the generous Easter presents that were purchased for our residents. It was greatly appreciated as these residents have no family members, and it made their holiday special.

Sincerely,
Margie Kuhn, Activities Director
