THE JOURNEY OF FAITH We have become somewhat familiar with the Christian Initiation of adults (and older children). Their formation period takes many months and goes through many stages. The process begins with a period of inquiry. When they and their catechists believe there is sufficient understanding and faith, we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance with these Inquirers. This rite marks their intent to seriously pursue a deeper relationship with the Church. The Inquirers become Catechumen (or students of the Church).
When these Catechumen and their catechists believe there is sufficient understanding and faith, we celebrate the Rite of Election. This rite marks them as those chosen for initiation into the Church at Easter. Becoming a full member means that they will be Baptized, Confirmed and receive the Eucharist during the Great Easter Vigil.
THE CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF A CHURCH BUILDING follows a similar pattern! Our inquiry into our future needs enabled us to make a decision about what kind of building this parish should build. In the second phase of our project, we hired the architects to work with us on the design, the contractors who helped us with cost projections and then we had our fund drive. We took all of this to the Diocese which gave us both the bishop's approval and a financial commitment. Then we began the final phase of the project: construction.
On June 28 at 4 pm, Bishop Mengeling will celebrate the rites of dedicating a church which are patterned on the Christian Initiation of Adults.
Once we enter the worship area, water is brought to the bishop. He will bless it and then use the water to sprinkle both the assembly and the walls. After the homily, Litany of Saints and Prayer of Dedication, the bishop will anoint the altar and then the walls with Sacred Chrism. (This is the same holy oil used in Confirmation.) The altar will be "dressed" in a white cloth and then the Eucharist will be celebrated on it for the first time.
In many ways, the Rites of Dedication treat the building as if it is a person. This is because this "house for the Church" the People of God, is the personification of the people who gather in it. So with all the joy and pageantry we can muster, we will initiate our new building on June 28, dedicating it to the worship of the Father and the mission of Son. Fr. Dave Howell
