THE RITES OF DEDICATION The Prayer of Dedication speaks of a church building as a temple of worship, a house of prayer and as a home for God's People. The rituals of the dedication liturgy underscore these words.
Once the assembly has entered into the worship area, the bishop will bless water and then use it to sprinkle both the building and the assembly. This ritual purification is similar to the rites that dedicated the temple of Jerusalem in ancient times. Then after the Scripture readings, homily and creed, we will pray the Litany of Saints followed by the bishop's prayer of dedication. This invocation of heaven asks God to make this place the temple of His divine presence. Finally, the Chrism is carried forward. The altar and then the walls are anointed with sacred oil, consecrating all to the worship of the Most High.
After the anointing, a brazier with incense is placed on the altar. This incense is a reminder of the divine presence that filled the ancient temple as a cloud of smoke. More importantly it is a symbol of the prayers of God's People rising before Him (Ps 141).
Finally, the Sacred Chrism is rubbed into the altar, which is then covered with a cloth. Then the candles are placed near the "altar table". It now becomes the center of our spiritual home, where God's family will be nourished with the Eucharist, the banquet of eternal life.
Even at the end we are reminded of the threefold purpose of a church building. After Communion, the Eucharist is carried in solemn procession to the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. In this out of the way place we will reserve the Eucharist for the sick and dying. The light above will remind us of the Lord's presence among us. It will also provide a space for private prayer and a refuge for those seeking the Lord's comfort.
SUNDAY, JUNE 28 is the date of our Dedication Liturgy. Bishop Mengeling will preside at this very special celebration which will begin in our Gathering Space at 4 pm. Fr. Dave Howell
