06-18-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED EXTRAORDINARY TIME The Easter Season ended with the celebration of Pentecost last weekend. So the crystal vessels, the extra alleluias and singing have been "packed away" until Christmas. Even though the color for this weekend is white for the celebration of the Trinity, we returned to the green season the Monday after Pentecost. Unlike the seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, the green season has no real name. Its Sunday and the week days which follow are numbered. As a result, the Church calls green season the Numbered Season. Since the Latin word for number is ordines the English translate it as Ordinary Time. The reality is, this season is anything but ordinary. It is the season of growth in love, in faithfulness, in holiness and in discipleship. My prayer for us all is that we will grow in the greater gifts and that this season will be a time of extraordinary growth! WELCOME, MARY MAHAR As you read in this month's issue of the Visionary, we will be adding another person to our parish staff to work with our Religious Ed Program: Mary Mahar. Mary brings many gifts and experience to our program. Her creativity and organizational skills will also be very complementary to Sr. Maryetta's gifts. So together, our attempt to share our faith with our younger brothers and sisters should flourish here at St. Mary Magdalen. Mary will be working with Sr. Maryetta in all aspects of the program, but will be responsible for a new Family Religious Ed Program and ongoing formation and lesson planning for our catechists. The new Family Program will take place every other Sunday morning (10:30 - 12:30). It will provide an opportunity for the whole family to come together and grow in their faith. (Mary has already begun working on the outline for the program. More information will be coming from her in the next few weeks (so stay tuned....). ATTENTION WOOD WORKERS Late last December, I received a special donation. I used some of it to purchase a pattern and the rest will be used to buy wood. Now all I need is a few skilled wood workers. The task is cut out a "silhouette nativity" for next Christmas season. It is just a silhouette, which will be painted/stained and then set near the entrance to our parish property. Any skilled wood worker(s) who would like to work on the project, please contact me. Fr. Dave Howell In Memorium Please remember in your prayers Charlene Huget in the death of her mother, Jenny Makara; Ted Eisenhut in the death of his father, Theodore Eisenhut, Sr.; Kathy Petrocella in the death of her sister, Betty Blaszak; and Joanne Nashar in the death of her father, William Hankins. While in the court of Philip II, he decided to embrace the religious life, in 1584, renouncing his title and inheritance. A trained philosopher and mathematician, he was singled out for his intellect and for his piety, and made his vows in the Jesuits in 1587. He had a vision that the Archangel Gabriel would lead Aloysius and St Anthony of Padua to heaven in a year. When a famine developed in Italy, a form of plague swept across the land. While caring for the victims, he contracted the plague, and died June 21, 1591 after receiving the Last Rites from St. Robert Bellarmine. Aloysius is remembered for his austerities and purity. He was declared protector of young students by Benedict XIII and the patron of youths by Pius XI. It is with joyful hearts that we, Judy and I, thank our extended family of St. Mary Magdalen for witnessing our re-commitment of marriage before God. We are grateful for the prayers, support and love that help us to live out this sacrament. We thank each and every one of you for your prayers offered, your words of love, the gift of time from your busy day, your cards, and most of all, your friendship. We leave you with this slightly paraphrased quote from Paul "We thank God for you every time we think of you; and every time we pray for you all, we pray with joy because of the way in which you have helped us in the work of the gospel from the very first day until now." Dave and Judy Scharf Religious Education Family Catechesis is coming! There is no doubt that the first catechists in a child's life are the parents. REGISTRATION for Religious Education will be held the week of June 26 - 9:30am-3:30pm and 6:30-8:00pm. Journey with Jesus still has many openings! Please register your children for a WONDERFUL WEEK! ON THE JOURNEY Is It Still A Sin? For those of you who may have missed my column the last couple of weeks, it is taking on the subtitle of "Is it still a sin?" for the summer; although this week it could very well be titled "Whatever happened to limbo?". For many of us raised before Vatican II (1962), having a baby meant racing to Church before the umbilical cord fell off to have your child baptized. We were indoctrinated with the concept of "limbo" a nebulous place where unbaptized babies went. The doctrine of limbo was never an official Church teaching; but for many of us, it was as real as heaven or hell. Today, "as regards to children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God"(CC#1261) "indeed the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved.." We are still encouraged to have our babies baptized as soon as possible, but to do so without the threat of limbo, just the joy of the sacrament which brings them into a special relationship with the Church and their Creator. If you have a question about a Church issue old or new please drop me a line or give me a call; chances are that if you're wondering about something, there are probably many others with the same concern. Besides that, it gives me the opportunity to use some of the books in my office! Yours on the journey, Marilyn Youth Group Since today is Father's Day, we want you to take time to be with your dad and your family. There is no meeting.
