ALL THINGS
CONSIDERED
THE
TENTH:
On June 29, 1993, on the Feast of
the Apostles Peter & Paul, Bishop Povish established a new parish in
Brighton Township. It was created from
areas served by St. John in Hartland and St. Pat in Brighton. The area to be served by this new parish
includes the entire township, north of I-96.
The temporary name for this parish was the New Catholic Community of
Brighton (but many at St. Pat’s called it “St. NoName”.)
The next day (the feast of the Martyrs of Rome), Bishop Povish
assigned me as the first pastor of this nameless parish.
THE
FIFTH: Five years ago this
weekend, Bishop Mengeling dedicated our new worship area on the fifth
anniversary of our parish.
The 25,000 square foot building was the culmination of three
and a half years of planning. Close to
300 people from our community worked on the project through the various stages
of planning, fund raising and finishing work.
The total cost of the land, the construction and the furnishings was
$4.6 million. In our first three years,
we had saved over $250,000 and our capital campaign raised almost $1.6 million
in gifts and pledges. (While that is not
the largest amount ever raised, it was the most successful fund drive in the
history of the diocese with 85% of our parishioners participating.) Over the last five years, the generosity of
many has reduced the debt to under $1.2 million.
The worship area seats 800, the hall seats 250 and over 800
young people receive religious education throughout the school year. There are programs for youth and seniors,
space for the countless meetings and offices for all of our growing staff.
This weekend offers us the opportunity to celebrate both the
past and the future. We celebrate the
great apostles, Peter & Paul, who first taught the faith. We celebrate our call as community to live
that faith. And we re-dedicate ourselves
to sharing with all of Brighton Township and beyond!
Happy Anniversary to all of you!
Fr.
Dave Howell

Please
remember in your prayers Janice Bordo and family in the death of Lawrence
Bastien, Janice’s father.

Today's passage describes the call
of the prophet Ezekiel. He was a Jewish
priest who was deported to Babylon at the time of the exile. He is called to proclaim God' s Word to those
who are exiled with him. God warns him
that this will be no easy task.
Paul's whole ministry was beset not
only by his own weakness but also by mistreatment and stress. In the passage just preceding today' s
reading, Paul described some of his spiritual visions. But in today' s passage, he chooses not to
boast of these but rather to talk about how God has worked through him despite
his weakness and trials.
Jesus experienced rejection even
before His suffering and death. Mark
here, no doubt, is presenting us with a foreshadowing of the final rejection
Jesus will experience and perhaps comforting those disciples who will also
experience rejection as they go about spreading the good news.

STEWARDSHIP

tirelessly to spread the Gospel. Not all
can be apostles, but we, too, must be good stewards of our vocations, using the
gifts we' ve been given in the service of God' s Kingdom.

As we celebrate our tenth year as a community we can look
around and see the growth that has taken place over time! Our Vision statement says that our vision is to build a community of
simplicity, peace, joy, inspiration and renewal… Well during this time of welcome growth,
our community needs more hands to help fulfill our vision!
Starting in
August, to better meet the growing demands of our Religious Formation program
and families, we would like to welcome Sandi Phillips as Administrative
Assistant to the Director of Religious Education. Sandi was chosen by our Formation Team and is
very highly qualified for this position. She is an advanced certified
catechist, was the Lead Catechist for our 5th grade classes, is a
Renew Facilitator, and has worked with youth for about 12 years. Sandi will work with Mary along with the
catechists and assist with the many different aspects of our programs. Welcome Sandi!
Starting in
September you will also see a new face in the parish office as Karen MacDonald
will be working on a part time basis as our receptionist. Karen is a former Executive Administrative
Assistant for General Motors, is on our Art & Environment team; also she is
involved in organizing our Olan Mills Directory, and will be a welcome addition
to our staff to help serve the growing needs of our parish community. Welcome Karen!

Walk-in Registration for fall classes will be held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays in the office from 10 am 2 pm.
See Josie!
Summer is finally here! But don' t let that stop you
from thinking about helping in the fall! Catechists and aides are needed for
our classes! Come join our team and
share your faith with our youth! If you
are interested in helping in the fall program, call Mary at 229-8624 (#15) for
more information.
For those catechists interested in
continuing your certification process, classes are being held in Adrian on July
29-31. (If you aren' t helping with JWJ,
you are welcome to take these classes!).
Any Catechists in grades 6-8 interested in attending some youth ministry
training classes, please let me know, as these opportunities will help you in
the class rooms as well! More info about
these opportunities can be found on the bulletin board in my office! Please let
me know if you are interested.
Registration for JWJ forms can be found in the gathering
area. We are still looking for adult
leaders to help! Please call Peggy
Weingartz if you would like to volunteer at 810 220-1678.
As you read this I will be off to
start our family vacation. We are going
to Oregon to visit with my parents and a lot of my siblings! Thank you all for your prayers for my father;
the doctors are allowing him to travel to the coast to build up his strength
and escape the dry heat of 115 in
Arizona! During the rest of the month of
July I will have earlier hours in the day.
If I am not available, I will check my voicemail (#15) and get back to
you!

BEFRIENDER
MINISTRY TRAININGThis
ministry is a program of lay pastoral care, where specially trained persons
enter into caring relationship with others at times of particular need by
visiting with them, being with them, and bringing emotional and spiritual
support. A BeFriender candidate develops
communication skills, faith sharing and ministry reflection. It also addresses issues such as grief and
loss, spirituality, aging, listening, and confidentiality. BeFrienders are there to listen, not to solve
problems or impose solutions.
BeFrienders can also discern, with the person they visit, whether
referral to appropriate professionals is needed.
Are you called? Does this ministry speak to something within? There will be training for BeFriender Ministry this August. The training will take place on Aug. 7, 8, and 9, then Aug. 14, 15, and 16, and end on Aug. 21, 22, and 23. If you would like further information regarding this training, please call Judy Scharf (248) 889-0274
