07-16-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED CELEBRATING MARY MAGDALEN The Feast of St. Mary Magdalen is officially next Saturday, July 22, but two years ago the bishop gave us permission to move it to the nearest weekend. So next weekend will be our celebration of our parish feast day, and the Liturgy of the Sixteenth Sunday of the Church Year will be replaced by the Liturgy of St. Mary Magdalen. Because this is also the Jubilee Year, we will also observe the day as a special day of prayer. At the close of the 11 am Liturgy, we will carry the Eucharist to the Chapel so that our people can come there during the afternoon to spend some time with the Lord in prayer. I hope that as many of us as possible, especially our Ministers of Prayer and Eucharistic Ministers, will come and spend some time in prayer for the good of the parish and our people. At 6 pm, the Blessed Sacrament will be returned to the altar of the church and we will celebrate Evening Prayer or Vespers. Afterward, we will take a break for a snack in the hall. FRANK: IN CONCERT At 7 pm, our own Frank DeLamarre will provide an hour long concert in celebration of our parish feast day. Frank will sing some of his own songs as well as many contemporary ones in a style that will be uplifting, prayerful and a real joy! For the last year now, Frank has given concerts both locally and across the country. His clear, John Denver-like voice, his prayerful style and the joy he finds in music will make the concert a wonderful experience for all who participate. It will also help make our parish feast day a real day of celebration. Please join us! (There will be a free will offering taken up at the end of the concert.) I am looking forward to seeing you! Fr. A devoted follower of Jesus. Mary is believed to have come from Magdala on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Scripture has it that she was the woman who anointed Christ's feet at the house of Simon. Demons may have been cast out of her by Christ, she ministered to Christ and the Apostles in Galilee and was present at the Crucifixion. Mary Magdalen was one of the holy women who discovered the empty tomb on Easter morning, and was the first person to encounter the Risen Christ; hence, is called the "apostle of the Apostles". Traditionally reported to have accompanied St. John t o Ephesus, it is also stated that she went with Lazarus and his sisters to France. The Greek Church records that her relics were enshrined in Constantinople in 886, but tradition places her in France, stating that she had been a hermitess at La Sainte-Baume and was buried at Aix. In 745, her relics were moved to Vezelay because of a Saracen invasion, and in 1600 were placed in a sarcophagus donated by Pope Clement VIII. Mary Magdalen is known as the patroness of penitents. A little girl was walking home from school in the midst of a severe thunderstorm with a lot of lightening. Her mother drove to pick her up and upon seeing her little girl, she noticed that her daughter kept looking up at the sky and smiling. The mother called her to the car and asked what she was doing. The girl looked at her mother and said, "God keeps taking pictures of me." No matter how severe things may seem to be at any given moment, we must remember that God is always with us. If we can look to the sky and smile every time our lives are gray with storm, then perhaps our troubles won't seem so bad. M.U.D. The sign-up sheet to serve lunch on July 22 at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen

schedule to serve God's people. For Your Good Health: July is Purposeful Parenting Month. Part of parenting is fostering self esteem, or a healthy sense of self in our children. But what is family self esteem? It is the belief that our family is valuable and worthwhile. It identifies the family's strengths, values how the family works together to assist one another's growth and appreciates each family member and the family as a whole. What can we do as Christian families to build self esteem? We can provide our families with unconditional love, learned best from God. Children are valued for who they are not what they do. Each person is irreplaceable, a gift from our heavenly Father. We can provide love with structure and guidance. Love without guidance really is not love. We can provide an environment that affirms one another. Children learn a great deal from their parents' interaction. "Love is patient, love is kind, it is not rude, it is not easily angered, it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." (1 Cor. 13:4-7) May our Creator help us to build families with healthy self esteem; families that reflect more fully the image of He who made us His family.
