07-23-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED CELEBRATING WHO WE ARE Less than a third of our parish community took part in helping to choose the name of our parish. Those who were here back then might remember the choice of names that came out of the "primary": St. Timothy, Epiphany and St. Mary Magdalen. Timothy was the disciple of St. Paul and, by tradition, the first bishop of Crete. Epiphany means revelation and the feast is the conclusion of the Christmas season celebrating the arrival of the magi in Bethlehem. Mary Magdalen was the first to see the risen Lord and was commissioned by the Lord to bring this good news to the others. I had asked everyone to reflect prayerfully on the three names and then vote for the name which best exemplified the qualities we hope would characterize this community. That is how the bishop came to give this parish the name Mary Magdalen. This weekend we celebrate the feast of our chosen patron, Mary Magdalen, the first witness to the resurrection. Not only will we celebrate the Liturgy of Mary Magdalen (rather than the Sixteenth Sunday of the Year) we are also invited to spend some time with the Risen Lord after the Liturgy. At the close of the 11 am Liturgy, we carry the Eucharist to the Chapel for an afternoon of prayer. I hope that as many of us as possible, especially our Ministers of Prayer and Eucharistic Ministers, will come and spend some time in prayer for the good of the parish and our people. At 6 pm, we will return the Blessed Sacrament to the altar of the church and celebrate Evening Prayer or Vespers. Afterward, we will take a break for a snack in the hall. A CONCERT BY FRANK DELAMARRE At 7 pm, our own Frank DeLaMarre will provide an hour long concert in celebration of the parish feast day. Frank will sing some of his own songs as well as some very familiar to you in a style that will be uplifting, prayerful and a real joy! One of Frank's songs which has touched many people is his own composition Take Them Home. He first sang it for us on All Souls Day three years ago, and it still brings a tear to the eye of anyone who has lost a loved one. Frank has been traveling several places around the country the last few months, giving several concerts of both spiritual and secular songs. We are fortunate that he could be home this weekend to share in our parish celebration. All this will make our parish feast day a real day of celebration. Please
join us! SACRAMENT OF THE SICK On Wednesday, July 26, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick during the 7pm Liturgy. All who have serious or chronic illness are especially invited. Celebrating Liturgy Sunday, July 23 - Mary Magdalen, disciple of the Lord Monday, July 24 Tuesday, July 25 - James, apostle Wednesday, July 26 - Joachim and Anne, parents of the Virgin Mary Thursday, July 27 Friday, July 28 Saturday, July 29 Sunday, July 30 Tuesday, July 25, St. James, Apostle. Brother of John, is called "the Greater" because he followed Christ before the other apostle of the same name. The son of Zebedee and Salome, he fished for a living with his brother John in Galilee. Jesus nicknamed James and John "the sons of thunder". James was with Peter and John at the raising of Jairus' daughter from the dead, as well as at the Transfiguration and the Agony in the Garden. He was beheaded, the first apostle to be martyred. According to tradition, he preached in Spain before his death and thus became one of the most venerated of the Spanish saints. His remains were taken to Compostela during the middle ages. He is the patron of pilgrims, of Spain, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Gifts from God Fiscal Year runs from July 1,2000-June 30,2001 STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK In today's Gospel, Jesus had planned to slip away from the crowds for a few moments of peace and a little rest. When He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to do the same.
