07-30-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED DIOCESAN PLANNING COMMISSION was established by the bishop to create a strategic plan for the whole diocese. That becomes a special challenge since the Diocese of Lansing covers 10 counties in south central Michigan with urban, suburban and rural communities. There are 265,000 Catholics in 95 parishes, 4 major medical centers, 3 major universities and several colleges and many other institutions as well. The plan is intended to provide a "blue print" to direct the efforts of our diocese to serve our growing Catholic community in a way that will keep us faithful to the Mission of Christ. A major part of the planning process will involve listening or input sessions; gathering people to hear their thoughts regarding the future direction of the diocese. When I use the word major, I mean major because we hope that we will hear from 20,000 folks in this part of the process. In order to accomplish such a large undertaking, the Commission has designed a process for these input sessions, but we want to make sure that the process will serve us well. So we would like to have a pilot session to make sure we will be successful. Since Char Turowski is on the Commission and I am the co-chair, we suggested Mary Magdalen as a starting place. Please, please set aside the evening of Thursday, Aug. 31 for our session. The two hour session will enable all of us to give voice to our hopes and expectations for the Church here in south central Michigan. You will be hearing more, but I would ask that you please set aside that evening as a favor to me. WELCOME, ST. ANNE'S YOUTH Later on Sunday afternoon we will be hosting the youth from St. Anne's Parish in downtown Detroit. This is the return visit to our young people who visited them back in spring. We first connected with St. Anne's six years ago when we began taking our food collection down there to help feed the poor who live in that community in "the shadow of the bridge" to Windsor. (They are the oldest parish in Michigan and we were the youngest -- it seemed a logical connection. At the time, the Livingston County Foodbank was well supplied.) This past year our youth helped deliver the food and a connection was made. So the youth from St. Anne will join ours for fun & food; and another "bridge" will be built to connect Brighton to the inner city. VACATION Thanks to all who asked about my vacation. It wasn't quite what I had planned, with some of it spent down in Cleveland with my sister who is in the hospital. But I did get extra sleep and that itself was welcome. It is good to be back! Fr. Dave Howell Celebrating Liturgy Sunday, July 30 Monday, July 31 - Ignatius of Loyola, presb. Tuesday, August 1 - Alphonsus Liguori, bishop, doctor Wednesday, August 2 Thursday, August 3 Friday, August 4 - John Mary Vianney, presb. Saturday, August 5 Sunday, August 6 - Transfiguration of the Lord Monday, July 31, St. Ignatius of Loyola, priest. Founder of the Jesuits. Born in the Basque province of Spain, to a noble family, he was trained in the military but was wounded in 1521, ending his career. While recuperating (to dispel the monotony) he was given books on the lives of Christ and the Saints, and noticed the peace and contentment he experienced, and felt he was moving toward God. Upon his recuperation, he journeyed to Manresa and spent 10 months in a cave formulating the Spiritual Exercises, a series of prayers, meditations and contemplations which follow the life of Christ. Ignatius was responsible for creating the unique and significant religious order of the Jesuits, which proved to be a bold and innovative community, stressing its devotion to the Holy See, brilliantly educating and spiritually developing priests, and showing concern for the missionary endeavors of the faith. The Society numbered 1000 members in Brazil, Japan and India. St. Ignatius is the patron saint of retreatants and soldiers. Tuesday, August 1, St. Alphonsus Liguori, bishop, doctor of the Church Founder of the Redemptorists. Alphonsus preached around the area of Naples and became much sought after as a confessor. He once said: "I have never preached a sermon which the poorest old woman in the congregation could not understand." In 1748 he published his first book of moral theology. Because of his extensive writing he was named a Doctor of the Church and is the patron of moral theologians; but it is as a preacher and confessor that he is a model for the Redemptorists and other priests as well. There is one change, however; the time will now be from 7-9pm, a half hour longer. So be sure you make note of it. We are looking for help! If you would be interested in helping us to create a Haunted House for Halloween, please call me soon. It was done a couple of years ago and the youth are really interested in putting one together again. Our annual camping/canoeing trip has been canceled this year. Time has just gotten away from me in the planning process for this event. Take notice of the monthly calendar hanging on the tack strip going into the social hall. It will have all scheduled youth events on it. I can be reached at the offices 9am-12noon Tuesday thru Friday and Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm. Should you need to reach me in the afternoons, you may call me at 227-7937 until 5pm. Monday is still my day off. M.U.D. Our trip to the Capuchin soup kitchen did not go quite as planned. In fact we did not make it. We spent all morning in the car patiently waiting in traffic. I do appreciate the Atwood family who left earlier and did make it downtown to help serve. Thank you! Thank you also to the Murphy family, Vanessa Reineke, and Marianne Quada for driving. I will schedule another time slot for us. Friday, August 25, Liggie Perkins will be opening her home to us. We
will gather together and share in friendship. This will be a potluck dinner
for the whole family. Be sure to bring your swim suits! A sign up sheet
will be available soon. HAVE WE CAUGHT YOUR INTEREST YET? A number of new books, videos, and audios have been added to the Library this week. Among others, there are two titles on grief. One, Complicated Losses; Difficult Deaths; A practical Guide for Ministering to Grievers by Dr. Roslyn Karaban, is written for those who help the grievers, such as our Samaritans, but it may also be helpful for those who are grieving. The author helps us to realized that deaths occur in our lives not only when we lose a loved one but when we lose a job, a marriage partner, or when children move away. They Shall be Comforted: for Those Who Grieve and Hope is a collection of reflections, readings, prayers, and rituals for those who grieve and hope in the resurrection. Stop in and take a look! Religious Education We are revving up for our JWJ road rally, which starts on Monday from 9:30-12, and runs through Friday this week. If your child is attending, please make us aware of any food allergies your child may have. REGISTRATION FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION is the week of August 7-11, from 9:30am-3pm and 6:30-8pm (except for Friday evening). Classes are filling up, please make sure you register your children. The family program is a new program being designed to help parents pass on our Catholic faith traditions to their children. This formation opportunity will take the place of traditional Religious Ed classes, and will involve both parents and children in the learning process. Families will meet twice a month on Sundays starting with the 9am Liturgy. Catechists and assistants are still needed for some of our classes. Please consider helping out! Our middle school classes are filling up and we are in great need of catechists for our 7 & 8 grade youth. Working with this age group or any of our other grades is a faith experience you need to try! Call the Religious Ed office today for more information.
