All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

MIKE POLCYN Until Mike began his battle with cancer, he was very active in the parish. His involvement has been fairly limited this past year but he has remained a member of our Finance Council.

Two weeks ago, the battle with cancer entered another phase. It appears that Mike has had a successful bone marrow transplant. He has responded quite well to the treatment, and everything looks very good.

This treatment is very intense. It begins with days of heavy chemotherapy which kills the cancer, but also destroys the bone marrow and the immune system. Fortunately, the doctors were able to "harvest" enough of Mike's own healthy marrow, so they will be able to replace it back in his system.

But he is going to be in the hospital for a while as the transplanted bone marrow grows. In the meantime, he has no immunity to any infections, so visitation is restricted. I know, however, that he would love to hear from you. If you would like to drop him a card or note, the address is: Mike Polcyn U of M Medical Center Room A 8118 1500 E Medical Center Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48109

MANY THANKS to those who helped to replace the stable roof! It looks great. Right now the old stable is used for lawn equipment and storage. Eventually, the plan is that we will use it as part of a larger picnic pavilion.

Many, many thanks to all of those who have been a part of Journey With Jesus. From set up through the week long program, it was great. We are grateful to everyone who was involved. Sr. Maryetta was the "ring-mistress" for the whole event. She did her usual wonderful job with the assistance of many good folks.

KNIGHTS & DAYS The Knights of Columbus is an organization of men which promotes the fraternity and spiritual well being of its members. It also has a very positive effect within the larger parish community. It has been suggested to me on several occasions that we establish our own K of C Council. Now that our new building is open, we have the space for a council. So in September, we will have a meeting of all those interested in joining the Mary Magdalen Council of the Knights of Columbus. Cards will be in the Gathering Space next weekend for those who are interested. Fr. Dave Howell

ON THE JOURNEY

This fall will bring many new opportunities for adult programs because our new space allows for daytime as well as evenings gatherings. For the first time we can offer Bible study with day-care. Our first sessions will begin the week of September 13 with a four week Introduction to Scripture followed by a six week study of the Book of Genesis.

Adult Bible study will be offered twice, Wednesday evenings after Mass (7:45 p.m.) and Thursday mornings at 10:00 with day-care. Registration forms will be available in the gathering area on the weekends or in the office during the week. Please consider signing up for some Adults Only classes this fall and get acquainted with the ongoing best seller. For more information feel free to give me a call at 229-8624. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

I must tell you that our Journey with Jesus last week was one of the best experiences you could have imagined! The first day we had over 125 children come and share the Call of the Apostles. Each child assumed the responsibility to become an apostle and that was super. Each day the numbers grew and grew.

I would like to thank all the people who made the week such a marvelous success. I know that I had a great time and all the children had a WONDERFUL time. I would like to thank all the people who donated items, the parents who participated, the young people who assisted and everyone who took part in this wonderful week. Sister Maryetta
