08-13-00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THANK YOU Last weekend Fr. Arnell came to us to appeal for our financial and prayerful support for his diocese in the Philippines. Thanks to your generosity, we contributed $5,507 for the support of those young people preparing for priesthood and religious life in the Diocese of Legazpi. MY SISTER I was not here last Saturday. I took advantage of Fr. Arnell's appeal to head down to Madison, Ohio (20 miles from Pennsylvania along Lake Erie). The reason for the trip was to begin the process of moving my sister, Maryanna, into the rectory. My sister has been hospitalized for the last 6 weeks in Cleveland; two weeks were spent in the burn unit and four weeks in therapy. Maryanna has MS. She had spilled a pot of coffee on herself and needed skin grafts and therapy to recover. In talking it over with her, the doctor, her husband and others, it was decided that we could make life a little better for her back here in Michigan. So with the help of a few folks, we went down to Madison last Saturday and packed up most of her things and brought them to Brighton. I brought Maryanna to the rectory when she was released from the hospital on Wednesday. Kayla, my 13 year old niece, will be joining her mom at the end of the month. We also packed up a lot of her things last Saturday. My brother-in-law will be working to put the house up for sale so that he can join us. TWO DOGS The other part of my sister's household is her dog, Peanut. He has been her companion for almost 12 years. The old boy is going deaf and is in "need of glasses". He has adjusted reasonably well to the move, but I don't know how well Peanut has adjusted to Rory. The large 16 month old pup wants to play. The 12 year old dog wants to sleep. So the old dog crawls under the bed into a space that's too small for the pup. Walking the two of them is an interesting exercise in patience (mine). Giving treats is also interesting, since the big one wants it all. MAKING GOD LAUGH I guess all of this comes under that heading. The Irish say, "If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans." Somehow all this isn't quite the plan I had in mind - so I guess that's
why I keep hearing someone chuckle! Tuesday, August 15, is the feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day. Masses are at 9:00am and 7:00pm. In memoriam Please remember in your prayers the Polcyn Family in the death of their husband/father, Albert Polcyn. Celebrating Liturgy Sunday, August 13 Monday, August 14 - Maximilian Kolbe, presb., martyr Tuesday, August 15 - Assumption of Mary into Heaven Wednesday, August 16 Thursday, August 17 Friday, August 18 Saturday, August 19 Sunday, August 20 Tuesday, August 15, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary In the only declared exercise of papal infallibility in the twentieth century, Pope Pius XII, after consultation with all the bishops of the Catholic Church, on Nov. 1, 1950, proclaimed the Assumption of Mary a doctrine of the Faith. The dogma of the Assumption states that Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven after the completion of her earthly life, since by reason of her Immaculate Conception she should not suffer the consequences of original sin. While there is no direct biblical evidence for the Assumption, the Church has long held, on the basis of theological reasoning and Tradition, the implicit belief in Our Lord's taking His mother to Himself from the moment of her passage from this life, since she is declared "full of grace" or "highly favored daughter" of God the Father(Lk 1:28). The Archangel Gabriel further articulates Mary's relationship to the Trinity in this fashion: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God"(Lk 1:35). It might be argued, then, as St. Francis de Sales suggests, that the Assumption is necessitated by the desire of the Trinity to behold for eternity Mary, who enjoys a unique relationship with each Person of the Trinity as daughter, mother and bride. The feast was celebrated by Christians as early as the seventh century. Today it is celebrated as a holy day of obligation in the United States. Religious Education In the Gospel reading last week, I was struck by two phrases Peter spoke to Jesus, "Rabbi, how good it is for us to be here," and "..for they were overcome with awe." I can relate to these phrases because I feel the same way! I am totally amazed at the participation of those planning and those attending JWJ. Everyone I have met so far has been so warm and welcoming to me. I am so excited to be here! Many families have still not registered for Religious Education for this fall. Spaces are limited and classes are filling up. If you want to be able to request a particular class time or day you need to contact the office. The family program still has openings! It is a new program designed to help parents pass on our Catholic faith traditions to children. This formation opportunity will take the place of traditional Rel Ed classes, and will involve both parents and children in the learning process. Families will meet twice a month on Sundays starting with the 9am Liturgy. Catechists and aides are still needed for some of our classes. Please
consider helping out! Call the Religious Ed office today! ON THE JOURNEY Summer is disappearing before our eyes and we begin counting down the days before school starts and our schedules are forever altered. Scripture and Stitches is continuing to meet weekly through August. We have the last 3 blocks of this year's Bible quilt to finish, join us any Tuesday at 10am. PARISH PICNIC is drawing closer (September 10). Sign up now in the gathering space! September 5 is our next Evening of Awareness, the first of our two-part Baptismal Prep Program. Infant Baptism normally requires a two or three month planning period. Yours on the journey, Youth Group If you are interested in community service, next Saturday, August 19, we will be going down to the Mary Lou Brown Mission in Detroit from 9-2pm. Our duties will include some yard work, light inside cleaning, sorting clothes, packaging food for the poor and possibly some computer work. Please call me at the parish office if you are interested in going. If you have any outdoor sports equipment or toys that you would like to donate to St. Anselms in Chicago, please let us know. We would like to mail a package by the end of August. St. Anselms is the parish where our Young Neighbors in Action teens worked in July. We are looking for help! If you would be interested in helping us create a Haunted House for Halloween, please call me soon. It was done a couple of years ago and the youth are really interested in putting one together again. There is a leadership meeting this Tuesday from 7-9pm in the youth room. You are welcome to attend. We are planning future events for this next school year. I can be reached at the offices 9am-12noon Tuesday-Friday and Tuesday evenings from 6-9pm. Should you need to reach me in the afternoons, you can call me at 227-7937 until 5pm. Mondays are my day off. M.U.D. ing your swim suits! A sign up sheet is in the gathering space. What a great week it was! Journey with Jesus had this building just buzzing
with good things. Our young children had a great time and the helpers
enjoyed themselves as well. Thanks for all your hard work. VIDEOS FOR LOAN Nearly 50 videos covering a wide range of topics for children and adults are available in the St. Mary Magdalen library. Among those for older children and adults is St. John in Exile. Imprisoned, John, the last living disciple of Jesus' twelve, remains full of humor, strong in spirit and obstinately spry. Through his eyes we relive the moving events in which Jesus Christ changed the course of human history. Have You Written your Letter Yet?? SISTER MARYETTA - CELEBRATING 40 YEARS All of us have received an invitation to participate in the upcoming Anniversary celebration of Sister Maryetta's 40 years as a sister. We request the gift of your reflections, thoughts, feelings, funny and profoundstories of Sister Maryetta's presence in our lives. There is a box in the gathering space to place your letter. They also can be mailed to the parish office Attention: Judy Scharf. We would like to have them by August 22 so they can be placed in a book of remembrance for Sister Maryetta and given to her on the day of celebration. Sister Maryetta has given 40 years of committed service and devotion to the Lord, answering His call in her life by serving and ministering to His people. She has shared many gifts with us. Now we have the opportunity to share with her how her gift of self has touched us. Knights of Columbus Council Family Picnic The first annual council family picnic will be held on Saturday, August 19. Parents/kids games will start around 1pm. We will feast on the Hawaiian style roasted pig, barbecued chicken, Peggy Reihl's potato salad, corn on the cob and baked beans provided by our Council. Members are encouraged to bring munchies to share and desserts. Members will also need to bring your own tables and chairs. Prospective members and their families are welcome! FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH: Blood Pressure Screening next weekend, August 19 and 20 following all three Masses in the Social Hall (alcove by the kitchen)!! Be sure to check out information on back-to-school sports injury prevention. Have you had a health examination lately?? God calls us to be good stewards of our health. Persons 20-49 should have a health exam every two years and persons 50 and over should have one every year. Women need to have gynecological exams every year unless otherwise directed by a physician. 70% of correct diagnoses depend on what you tell your doctor!! It is imperative that we communicate openly and thoroughly with our physician and equally as important to record his or her insights and recommendations (it is reported that we forget 50% of what is said in the doctor's office!). Take an active role!! If you are uncomfortable with advice, ask for an explanation or seek a second opinion. You can say no to unnecessary tests and acquire copies of letters and results for your own files. Always follow through on advice you are comfortable with. The Parish Nurse Ministry is happy to provide you with a Doctor's Visit Checklist or assist you to find a health care provider to meet your needs. Blessings on your health journey!! What is the VOICES project? VOICES (Vocalizing Opportunities, Issues, Challenges, and Envisioning Strategies) is the Strategic Planning Process for the Catholic Diocese of Lansing. Through the VOICES process, listening sessions will be held in each parish to determine the opportunities, issues, and challenges that face the Catholic Church in the future. Input will be sought from all segments of the Catholic faith community. Information will be gathered during these input and listening sessions. The information will be gathered and compiled for the formulation of a diocesan wide plan. Please join us on Thursday, August 31, 7:30pm for our parish input sessions to give your input into the church of tomorrow. LIVINGSTON COMMUNITY HOSPICE'S VOLUNTEER TRAINING for providing support to the terminally ill and their families will take place Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16 and 23 and Wednesday, Sept. 27 at McPherson Hospital in Community Room 1 from 10am-2pm, except on the 27th from 8:30-10:30am.
