All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

TO LATE COMERS Despite our best efforts, we sometimes arrive late. Having been caught in a similar situation, I understand. The difficulty is that when folks come late for Liturgy, they become a distraction or even a disruption to those who are trying to be attentive to the Scripture readings.

I have requested that our hospitality folks respectfully ask anyone who comes after the Glory to God to wait in back. Then, when the assembly rises for the Alleluia, latecomers can easily slip into place without distracting anyone. All of us have been late at some point along the way. It happens to everyone. Asking people to wait in back is simply a matter of courtesy to those already seated. Thanks for your cooperation!

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF TRUTH Over the last few years, there has been a continuing devaluation of the importance of truth. Recent national events and the usual spate of opinion polls which accompany them show alarming signs of an increasing disregard for the truth. Truth and trust are intimately and inseparably linked. They either stand together or they fall. Moreover, they are the "glue" of every relationship. Truth and trust bond friends, spouses, families, parishes and communities. Without truth, there is no trust and relationships whither and often die.

I remember back to my college days. The lack of honesty regarding our role in Vietnam created a whole generation who became distrusting of government and authority. A president who was forced to resign because of a lie created a deeper, more pervasive cynicism within society.

God gave us the eighth commandment: "You shall not bear false witness". The Creator commanded us to be honest so that we would have the means to reach out beyond ourselves to form relationships. Truth and trust are the glue that holds society together. Without it relationships disintegrate into a morass of suspicion, deceit and self-interest.

While my comments are a result of recent events, my purpose here is to praise the value of truth and to reflect on its importance. Honesty with self, others and God reaches to the very core of our human nature. The one who fails to cherish truth, will ultimately fail to value anything, including their self. Fr. Dave Howell

YOUTH NEWS

Well it's back to school time. Where did the summer go! But to be honest, I love this time of the year. Soon God will beautifully color the trees and the air will become crisp! It's a time of apple cider & hay rides, homecoming dances & football games. Speaking of dances, our dance last weekend was a blast! Everyone who came and danced, or didn't dance, had a great time. Anyone who could not make it for one reason or another will get the chance to join the fun again. We plan to dance the evening away again! More details and a date will be set soon.

There is a meeting tonight. If you're interested in becoming a part of the youth group, just stop by at 7-8:30 in the youth room.
