ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

VOICES PROJECT At our meeting on Thursday with the Diocesan Strategic Planning Commission, many issues, opportunities and challenges were mentioned. By the end of the evening we identified five priorities. (The following is my summary of the five.)

1. The first priority is leadership in the Church. We need to increase the numbers of priests, deacons, religious and lay ministers in the Church. A variety of clearly defined ministries should be encouraged, the roles of lay ministers expanded and all those in ministry should be adequately trained to provide dynamic service. The number of women in all levels of ministry should be increased. (Some would like the ministry of priest and deacon open to women as well.)

2. The second priority is the spiritual life of our young people: high school and young adults. We need to look for effective ways to inspire, educate and guide our youth so that they will continue to mature as full members of the Church.

3. The third priority dealt with Outreach. There are many in need of emotional and physical support especially the poor, the sick, seniors and families and individuals who are struggling. We should look for ways to reach out to serve them.

4. The fourth priority is the Catholic education of our children. We want to assure that there will be a variety of quality educational programs for our children including local access to Catholic elementary and high schools.

5. The fifth priority is Evangelization of the young and old, those who are active and those who are not. We want our people to clearly understand the basic teaching of Catholicism and its moral and social justice principles; so that we can better live the Gospel. A SPECIAL BLESSING Next week, at the Sunday Liturgies, we will bless the commitment of those men and women who have offered to serve as Catechists to our youth.

This ministry is much more than just teaching religion, it is sharing the gift of faith with our younger sisters and brothers.

Of all the ministries offered in Church, there are few that are as important to the future. I hope you will join me in blessing their ministry and in continued prayer for the success of their ministry in the months ahead. WHERE WERE THEY?? The turn out for the VOICES Session was wonderful, 188 signed up and 17 more showed up to participate.

What disturbs me is that 52 just didn't show! I am sure some forgot, some had things come up unexpectedly; but I find it hard to believe that 52 had these things happen. I have heard others who have had similar experiences of people failing to keep their commitments.

While it not the heart of the Gospel, simple courtesy is still a part of the Gospel. I believe it would come under the heading of "do unto others..."
Fr. Dave Howell

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

The good steward must not show favoritism. The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the second reading that God has chosen the world's poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God's kingdom.

Religious Education

Religious Education classes begin Sunday,September 24. You may be wondering: Can I be a catechist? There are many qualities necessary for the task of catechesis. Loving God, being at ease with children, and being sensitive to their needs are a few! Your role is to share with the children how God is revealed to us through Scripture, tradition and their own life experiences. Take advantage of catechist formation classes and meetings for free training! As you catechize one particular group of children, keep in mind that you are really part of a whole community of catechizers - you are not alone!!

Catechists and aides are badly needed for some of our weekly and Family classes, especially in our 7, 8 and 9th grades. Meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, September 13 and 20 at 7:00pm in the Hall. Mary Mahar Family Religious Education Team Members Wanted! Are you interested in helping families recognize God's presence in the ordinary events of family life? Since all of us are connected to some kind of family, all are welcome to help in our family program. Sessions are designed to share stories, dialogue, prayer, music, and time to help families just to be with each other. Team members are wanted to help in various areas of the family program. Please consider helping twice a month from 10:30-12:30. Call Mary at 229-8624 or 632-5943 for more details!

Youth Group

Wow what a night! We had our fourth annual kidnaping lock-in just this weekend. We met many new faces and had a great time! It is our way to welcome freshman into the youth group. We hope to see many of you at our weekly meetings and scheduled functions. Any senior high teen is welcome to come and participate; note however, there is no youth group meeting tonight. Many of us need the time to catch up on our sleep.

Please stop in the youth room and take a look at the painting that is now finished. It looks awesome! Matt Magon drew it up with the help of his mother and sister, and it has become a great gift for us all to see. So pop in and take a look.

We are still in need of people to help in many areas with our haunted house. Please call me at the office for any reason regarding the plans.

This Wednesday some of us will be traveling to St. Mary's in Chelsea to attend a healing Mass for the teens in today's society. Fr. Joe Krupp will be the presider, and also present at the Mass will be a man by the name of Irving Houle. He has been graced with the gift of the Stigmata. We will need to leave the parish parking lot by 4:30pm. The Mass starts at 6:30. I expect to be back by 10:15. After the Mass, Irving will place his hands on anyone who wishes to be touched by the Holy Spirit. I am told the church will be crowded and to expect to be there awhile after Mass is over.

M.U.D.

I encourage you to read the paragraph just above this. If you are interested in attending this Mass, please just let me know.

Wednesday, September 27, we are scheduled to volunteer our time at the Livingston Community Food Bank. Our time slot is from 4-6pm. Be sure to mark your calendar now. There is a sign up sheet in the gathering area. Margaret Callaghan
