THE BACK FORTY There are several things that still remain to be done before our building is actually finished. Some have noticed the workers on the roof, who are correcting some earlier mistakes before they become problems. Some of the paint and stain need to be touched up and completed, and several ceiling tiles must be replaced.
The largest project that remains is the top coating of the drive and parking lot. In discussing this with the Construction Task Group, Properties Team and Finance Council, we decided to also pave the "back forty" as well. (That is the area between the end of the present parking lot and the stable.)
Originally, the intent was to wait and do it as part of an interior expansion in a few years. But it will be cheaper to do it now when all the heavy equipment is already here for the top coating. It will also prevent any possible damage that the heavy equipment might inflict on the original parking area. All things considered, it seemed to make sense, both fiscally and practically, to have the work done now.
A TEMPORARY PLACE Many new folks have joined the parish since we began the project, so a little more explanation might be helpful. Our present building was built after a great deal of planning. When we hired the architects, we told them to design "a large, multi-purpose building which would have a dedicated worship space that could be renovated later into additional classrooms and a larger social hall in the future." When we designed the building, we knew that within five years we would outgrow it. We wanted an area that would serve as church and have the look of church, even though it would be temporary. Even the back walls of the worship area are designed to be replaced with folding walls when we need to expand our seating. That is a primary reason why we chose chairs over pews (and why we don't have kneelers.)
GROWING The number of parishioners continues to increase as we add new members to the community. Last weekend, twenty or so new families joined us. sBut Sr. Maryetta can tell you how fast we are growing. Over 500 youth are enrolled for religious education, and more are expected! Even having the program three times a week, we are reaching capacity. Fr. Dave Howell
