ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

THE ADVENTURE BEGINS There are three reasons for the existence of a parish: to proclaim the Gospel, to celebrate the Gospel and to live the Gospel in a way that will make the Gospel credible to others.

Each week we celebrate the Gospel, the good news of Christ's saving love, with Liturgies that many find to be uplifting and inspiring.

This week we begin to proclaim the Gospel among our youth, with the start of our Religious Education Program. During the two Sunday Liturgies, we have prayed over them. MANY THANKS to Sandi & Rick Phillips, Marilyn & Jim Rhadigan and all those who were a part of our postponed picnic. Even though the event was a week later than anticipated, it was as wonderful as ever.

Those responsible for set up and clean up and everything in between are to be congratulated for a wonderful job. Thanks, too, to our chicken and tube steak (hot dog) chefs! A FOLLOW UP I want to pass on a word of thanks to all those who participated in the VOICES Session on August 31. The Strategic Planning Commission members were delighted with the participation and level of energy and enthusiasm of our people for the project. More than one member of the commission commented that our gathering set a high standard for the rest of the parishes in the diocese.

Even the bishop had heard about our session. Last Saturday I went to the Diocesan Pastoral Council (Sr. Maryetta is the chair) to make a presentation on the planning process to the council. Sister and I were both surprised when, after I mentioned the pilot session here, Bishop Mengeling spoke up saying he had already heard from some of the participants how well it had gone here!

As a result of the session here, the commission made a few changes in the format of VOICES and saw other ways to improve the process.

So thanks again to all who participated; I appreciate it. Our five priorities will be combined with those of the other seven parishes in the region after they have their VOICES Session during the winter. I will report to you the complete set of regional priorities when that list is complete.

Wednesday, Sept. 27, St. Vincent de Paul, Priest. Born in France in 1581 of a poor family, he became a priest at the age of 19. Captured by pirates while on a sea voyage, and spending two years as a prisoner and slave in Tunisia, he succeeded in converting his master to Christianity. On the advice of his spiritual director, he accepted the charge of a parish in suburban Paris where he gathered together a group of young men. While serving as chaplain to an aristocratic family in Paris, he suffered serious temptations against the faith. Four years later he engaged in an apostolate among the men who worked on ships, became a pastor of a parish and then a chaplain to galley slaves in Paris. But it was in a catechetical apostolate to the peasants of the French countryside that Vincent found his particular vocation. In 1625 he gathered together a group that would become the Vincentians, engaging in parish missions among the poor and uneducated. In 1633 the Daughters of Charity came into existence. France benefited from the charitable works of St. Vincent de Paul for 60 years. Pope Leo XIII named him patron of all charitable works throughout the Catholic world.

Religious Education

Welcome to our new year of Religious Education! Thank you to all of you for your warm welcome last week at the picnic (I think Fr. Dave should let me serve ice cream to you every week!).

The picnic was a great place to be, a very warm and welcoming day. I would like to thank our parish nurses, who proved we have excellent first aid here! (I was on the stinging end of an angry bee.)

We have over 620 students currently enrolled in our Religious Education program! We also have 82 catechists and aides helping in our classes. This is an impressive amount of people involved in faith formation and that is only in this program. I ask that you keep us all in your prayers.

Just a reminder that classes start today, with Kindergarten during the 9 & 11 am Liturgies, and grades 9-10 meet at 5:45-7:00 tonight with youth group following. Wednesday our sessions begin at 4:30-5:45 and again at 6:30-7:45. Thursday our session runs from 6:30-7:45. Parents are still needed to be substitutes and hall monitors. Please call the office or sign up when you bring your children to class. I am looking forward to meeting all of you and your children.

ON THE JOURNEY

The presentation by David Eich, We're Not In Kansas Anymore, which had been planned for this Sunday, has been rescheduled for later in the fall. Please watch for the new date it should be a very worthwhile evening for both parents and teens.

To commemorate October as the Month of the Rosary, we will be praying the scriptural rosary at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. Please join us on these four Wednesdays to reflect on the life of Christ through this very traditional prayer of the Church. Coffee and donuts will be available in the adult formation room immediately following.

It's not too late to join the Thursday morning Scripture series entitled, "An Overview of the Old Testament". It will run for four weeks and act as the kick-off for our nine week study on the Book of Exodus. Day-care is provided. Sign up sheets are in the gathering area, or call me in the office. We meet Thursday mornings from 10-11:30am in the Adult Formation Room.

M.O.M.S. Their first meeting of the fall is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20 at 9:30 a.m. in the Adult Formation Room. For more information call Jeanette Martin at 229-5197.

Yours on the journey, Marilyn

This year, I have some new responsibilities added to my position. Besides guiding the Religious Education Program, I am also thrilled to be ministering in some new areas. If you know of anyone who needs to receive Eucharist, someone who needs a Samaritan helper or someone who would be assisted by a Befriender, please let me know. The community of Saint Mary Magdalen is very important and if I can assist in any way, it would be a privilege.
Sister Maryetta

What a powerful experience we all had attending the healing Mass! The presiding priest was Fr. Joe Krupp who was wonderfully enthusiastic. Listening to Irving Houle, who has been graced with stigmata, was awesome. He is an older man with a very gentle spirit. It was a genuine experience for all in attendance. I am glad to have had the opportunity to expose teens to such a miracle in today's world. If we fully open ourselves to God, we can see the miracles he performs everyday all around us. God calls us to be healers also to the many people in our lives by just being present to those who are suffering. That is all Irving does. His presence is a gift we all received at the healing Mass. What an extraordinary man!

Haunted House plans are going well. However, should planning not be of interest to you, set up and take down are always fun. Call me with any questions.

M.U.D.

I apologize for the misunderstanding regarding the date for the food bank. I made an error on the sign up sheet. It has been corrected. The correct date of Wednesday, September 27, is still scheduled. We will volunteer our time at the Livingston Community Food Bank. Our time slot is from 4-6pm. There is a sign up sheet in the gathering area. No permission slips are required because you will be dropping your child off right at the food bank. Directions are in the gathering space next to the sign up sheet. Margaret Callaghan

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

On Wednesday, Sept. 27, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick during the 7pm Mass, expecially for all with serious or chronic illness.

VG's RECEIPTS

The Charity & Justice Ministry Team continues to ask you to save your VG's receipts and return them in the container provided in the Gathering Area. Through these receipts, organizations can collect 1% of the receipt total. Thanks to your help, $233 was received recently. These funds will be used to help those in need within our parish.

DEVELOPING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD THROUGH PRAYER

On Sunday evenings, beginning October 8, Deacon Dave and Anne Williams will be leading a five week process on prayer. The sessions will be Sunday evenings 7:00-9:30. Sessions are October 8, October 22, November 5, November 19 and December 3. The first session will focus on the what and why of prayer, what prayer is, ways of prayer and discernment. The remaining sessions will focus on different prayer forms as we explore four saints through their life, prayer experience and spirituality. We will explore the style of prayer and prayer form, both set in the saint's own time and in our own life and time. The five week process will enable each participant to discover various forms of prayer and to determine which might be most suitable to their own prayer life, to deepen their relationship with God. Signup sheets will be in the Gathering space. For further information contact Deacon Dave or Anne at 810229-8624.

RCIA - JOURNEY

If you are seeking information or insight about the Catholic faith, you are invited to Inquiry which began September 18 at 7:30pm in the Adult Education Room.

Item: Have you ever thought about being a sponsor or catechist in our RCIA program, but hesitated because you weren't sure what is involved? Please come find out what's involved and how we can help at Information Night on Nov. 15. Your RCIA Team

Care Program/Arthritis Recovery & Education

On September 29 from 2-4pm Dr. Edward Loniewski, one of our parishioners, will introduce the CARE program, Comprehensive Arthritis Recovery & Education. Also, Ms. Lois Peer, a nutritionist, will join him to present "Arthritis Friendly Foods". This program is based on the philosophy that arthritis impacts the body, mind and spirit. It aims to encourage people to participate in their own healing and to draw from many resources in order to provide a holistic, informative and possibly life changing discussion! Although pre-registration is not required, for planning purposes we encourage you to sign up. A sheet will be in the gathering area or contact the parish office (810) 229-8624.

Two Heartsaver Classes will be offered Monday, October 16, at 10am and 6pm. Should you witness a life threatening emergency, you could be the first responder, the first link in the Chain of Survival. Please consider joining us to learn the ABC's of CPR. The class is nonthreatening and even fun! You may sign-up in the gathering area.

BRIGHTON AREA CROP WALK - Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 8, 2:00pm!
