10/01/00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THE CATHOLIC CATECHUMENATE Last winter we had over 20 folks who participated in a program of adult formation called the Catholic Catechumenate. Participants joined our catechumen on their journey to Easter and Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Those who participated last year found the experience to be very rewarding. It not only covered the fundamentals of our faith, it also gave participants the opportunity to ask questions about a wide range of the ChurchÕs moral teachings and our traditions, customs and practices. During Lent, the two groups came together for several prayer experiences, which helped make Lent a forty day retreat, a real time of renewal. The biggest drawback of our first attempt at a Catholic Catechumenate was that it needed more time. So this year we have decided to start the process in the fall, take a break for the holidays and then resume again after the start of the new year. This year, the process will begin on Monday, October 23 and continue over the next six Monday evenings (from 7:30 Š 9 pm). This first phase will end before Thanksgiving. There is no registration necessary, but if you know you will be participating, it would be helpful if you would give us a call. If you have questions, you can call Marilyn, Maryetta, Dave (the deacon) or myself. The sessions will be led each week by one or two of us, so we are all more than able to answer your questions. ANOTHER NEW EXPERIENCE Last week was another first for me; it was a school open house for my niece, Kayla! Now, I have participated in open houses before, but it was at parishes where we had our own school. This was the first time I have gone as one who has a student enrolled in the school. At 6:30 a week ago Tuesday, I loaded my sister into the van (which has a wheel chair lift) and off we went to Ore Creek Middle School. We made the rounds of all her classrooms and listened to the teachers explain their homework policies and classroom procedures. I went dressed in my "Uncle Dave clothes" rather than in my "Fr. Dave clothes". Not surprisingly, I ran into several parishioners from both St. MM and St. John. Many folks understood why I would be there, but a few did a double take and are perhaps still wondering about my presence there. In any case, my sister, her daughter and I are adjusting reasonably well to the new experiences and challenges of being together. So are the two dogs and the cat!!! Fr. Dave Howell Marriage I. Adam Flecks & Samantha Hays Mass Sunday, October 1 Monday, October 2 Š The Guardian Angels Tuesday, October 3 Wednesday, October 4 Š Francis of Assisi, religious founder Thursday, October 5 Friday, October 6 Saturday, October 7 Š Our Lady of the Rosary Sunday, October 8 Monday, October 2nd - Guardian Angels - This feast dates from 1411 in Valencia, Spain, when it was introduced in honor of the guardian angel of the city. The feast was added to the Roman Calendar in 1608, when Pope Paul V placed it on the first free day after the feast of St. Michael. However, devotion to the guardian angels dates back to the Middle Ages; and the most common representation in art was that of Tobias being led by the archangel Raphael. This feast serves as a reminder that divine providence has entrusted us to the custody of the angels. The angels eternally sing the praises of the Lord, and hence the antiphon for the Canticle of Mary states: "The angels will always see the face of my heavenly Father." If the angels hover over the incarnate Word, then all the solemn liturgical feasts can be celebrated, from Bethlehem to the Ascension, in their company. Please pray that the sick will respond to GodÕs healing will, especially: Dick Clabby, Bonnie Doty, Lottie Machowski, Frank Gondek, Jerome Wagdala, Bob Johnson, Pat Browning, Ralph Helmer, Joanne Fournier, Bev Zizka, Candy Philbrick, Roger, Kevin Weitzel, Hogan McCuan, Barry Wilkinson, Bob Chilton, Maryanna, Margo, Fr. Along with all the classes starting, We are looking forward to this new year of faith formation here at St. Mary Magdalen Parish! We are in need of 5 people to help as catechists for our family program Š you donÕt have to be a parent or in this program to help. This involves working with small groups of children and helping in their faith formation, for about one hour (minimum), two times a month. Please call Mary at 229-8624. As the children all started arriving for their classes, it was awesome to see the amount of people involved in the faith formation of our youth! The halls were crowded and noisy as children looked for their catechists. The catechists, after attending their formation classes and planning meetings were all set and ready for them! (We had about 30 catechists and aides from the parish attend formation classes last week in Fowlerville from 8-4!) Please pray for the success of our new year. Mary Mahar ON THE JOURNEY There are many heroes at St. Mary Magdalen. We as a parish have been exceptionally blessed with people who are willing to go above and beyond in giving of their time and talents. In the past month the Picnic Team, chaired by Rick & Sandy Phillips (for the second time) have certainly met the honorable mention states. We all benefited from the commitment of this team. The men of the Knights of Columbus spent a lot of time in order to complete our pavilion in time for the picnic. Another ministry group are the men and women of the funeral lunch group co-ordinated by Kathy Clark, Karen Alfanos and Betty Polaske. They continue to respond on the shortest of notices to organize the meals for our grieving families. A special Thank you for all you do!!! Small Faith Community sign up sheets are in the gathering area.Rosary - To commemorate October as the Month of the Rosary, we will be praying the scriptural rosary at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings.
