10/08/00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY The disciples of Jesus watched Him pray and must of marveled at the way He entered into a communion with the Father. That is why, I suspect, they asked Him to teach them to pray. (Lk 11.2) JesusÕ response to their request was to teach them the Our Father. I believe every disciple of the Lord desires the gift of a rich prayer life that will enable them to live in communion with the Lord. That is why the Regional Mission that will take place next week is such a blessing. Some of the best preachers in our diocese will lead the four evenings. They will reflect on the purpose and possibilities of prayer in our daily lives. The Regional Mission will take place at St. PatÕs in Brighton Sunday through Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30. On Monday and Tuesday there will be special, separate sessions for children and teens. Many folks participated in our Parish Retreat last winter and found the experience to be very rewarding. The Regional Mission is very similar but the mission team will be composed of men and women who will present a varied reflection on prayer in our lives. Bishop Mengeling will be the presider at the Liturgy that will close the Mission on Wednesday evening. I hope you will make plans to come all four evenings (or whichever evenings you are able)!! All meetings and activities here at the parish will be cancelled on those evenings so that we can be at the Mission! THE ASSAULTS ON LIFE CONTINUE I was disturbed to hear on the news last Thursday that the Food and Drug Administration has approved the "Abortion Pill" RU 487. This comes only weeks after another agency approved government funded research on fetal tissue. Given the prevailing philosophy of unlimited access to abortion, it comes as no surprise. It is another sad commentary on how much human life is degraded and devalued in our nation and our world. I wonder what Jesus would say about this and the other assaults on human life: ongoing violence against people from conception to natural death; the unwillingness to provide adequate food and health care to those in need; the attempt to legitimize suicide; the death penalty. These are only a few of the ways the value of life is diminished. Actually, I really donÕt wonder what Jesus would say about these assaults
on human life, I am sure of what He would say. I guess I wonder why those
who claim to follow Jesus would say something different. This mission will focus on prayer and our daily Christian life through talks on Spirituality, Daily Struggles, Life of Prayer, and Renewing our Faith. For our youth starting in grade 5-8 and those in High School, there will be separate services on October 16 & 17 starting at 7:00! Help is still needed to work as catechists with small groups for our family program Š you donÕt have to be a parent or in the program to help! We meet 2 Sundays per month.
