All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

The KNIGHTS on COLUMBUS DAY It seems very fitting that the first gathering of St. Mary Magdalen Knights of Columbus will take place on Columbus Day. Over forty members will be the founders of the council. The gathering will take place in the rectory basement at 8 pm Monday. One of the first items on the agenda will be the election of officers and the organization of the council.

PROPOSAL B on this November's ballot, would legalize "assisted" suicide. As one ten year old pointed out, that term itself doesn't make sense. "If suicide means some one takes their own life, wouldn't assisting be killing?" That is one of the reasons why the Michigan Medical Association is opposed to this initiative. It would fundamentally alter the role of doctors and their relationship to their patients. The passage of this legislation would also destroy a principle that has been a part of Michigan law since our state was founded.

In an era when slavery was still accepted, Michigan was the first government in the world to ban capital punishment! The reason why those who wrote our first constitution chose to do this was their concern that even one innocent person might be put to death. Proponents of Proposal B don't share that same concern. Not only are they unconcerned about the great danger that this law would pose to innocent life, but they also want to change Michigan into the place to die. The legislation would allow people from other states to come to Michigan to commit suicide with a doctor's help. Proposal B is toxic! Fr. Dave Howell

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information.

Our new facility has the main Worship Area, which the early Church called "a house for the Church". This meant that it was the spiritual home or gathering place for Church, the People of God. It was not until the early Middle Ages that a building was also called a church.

We also have three chapels. Holy Cross Chapel is located near the offices. With seating for forty, it provides a smaller more intimate setting for weekday Liturgy and small prayer services.

The Reconciliation Chapel is located near the Baptismal Font at the entrance to our Worship Area. It is the place where the Sacrament of Penance is celebrated. The location of this chapel is very deliberate. Through Baptism we are enabled to approach the Lord's Table and become one with Him in the Eucharist. When sin keeps us from approaching the altar, it is the Sacrament of Penance that enables us to come to Him again. In a wonderful way, this Sacrament also restores us to the holiness we first received in Baptism.

The third chapel is the reservation or Blessed Sacrament Chapel. For centuries, the Eucharist was reserved so that the sick and dying might share in the gift of Christ outside of Liturgy. Often it was reserved in the sacristy, the place were the clergy vest, or in a small container on the altar.

In the Middle Ages, devotion to the Eucharist grew. People wanted to spend time in quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, so separate chapels were developed. Here the faithful could find solitude to be alone with the Lord.

Church guidelines require that we again provide a separate chapel for the reservation of the Eucharist. The primary purpose is to provide an "out of the way place" for the disciples of the Lord Jesus so that they might spend time alone with Him.

ON THE JOURNEY

Homecoming '98 begins October 26. It provides each of us with the opportunity to invite inactive or alienated friends and family back to the Catholic Church for an evening of questioning. If you know someone who might benefit from this experience, please consider passing on the invitation or, even better, offer to come with them. We will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the adult ed. room. If you have any questions please call me (229-8624). NOTE: Genesis Scripture Study will begin on October 21 and 22 instead of the week before because of the Diocesan Common Conference in Lansing. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

World Mission Sunday

World Mission Sunday - "Go...make disciples of all nations..." Through our baptism, each one of us is called to share in Jesus' mission to all peoples, all nations. Next weekend, as we celebrate World Mission Sunday, we have a special opportunity to do this, by helping those who carry on the missionary task day by day, often in very difficult and dangerous circumstances. As we pray and offer our generous donations through the Propagation of the Faith, we will help priests, sisters, brothers and lay catechists who bring the Gospel to life among two-thirds of our human family. A portion of the World Mission Sunday collection in the United States will help the Home Missions through the Bishops' Committee on the Home Missions. Please be as generous as possible on this occasion of such great importance to the worldwide mission which Jesus has entrusted to the Church...to us.
