ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

LEARNING TO PRAY Anyone who takes the Gospel seriously will also desire the gift of a rich prayer life that will enable him or her to live in communion with the Lord. That is why the Regional Mission that will take place this week is such a blessing during this Jubilee Year. This Mission or retreat is intended for everyone in our region. It will take place at St. PatÕs in Brighton this Sunday evening through Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30. On Monday and Tuesday there will be special, separate sessions for children and teens.

The theme of the Mission is from Luke 11.2. The disciples of Jesus had been watching Him pray and marveled at the way He entered into a communion with the Father. So they asked Him to teach them to pray as John, the Baptizer, had taught his disciples.

Some of the best preachers in our diocese, including our bishop, will join us to share with us their insights into the role of prayer in our daily lives, its power and the many way we can learn to pray.

Several of our folks are involved in this effort. Our Liturgical Musicians will share their ministry on Monday evening and other parishioners will be there as hospitality, ushers and readers. Bishop Mengeling will be the presider at the Liturgy that will close the Mission on Wednesday evening.

I hope you will make plans to come all four evenings (or whichever evenings you are able)!! All meetings and activities here at the parish will be cancelled on those evenings so that we can be at the Mission!

I would suggest that you car pool with others and come early if at all possible. Parking at St. PatÕs can be difficult at the best of times and I am sure it will prove to be a challenge during the Mission.

BEYOND THE SLICK SLOGANS As we approach election day, I would ask you to seriously look at and carefully listen to all of the candidates running for president, Congress, the state Legislature and the courts.

I beg you, PLEASE DO NOT choose the candidates for whom you will vote based on their advertising and slogans!! Be more thoughtful, read about their stands on different issues and vote for the ones that represent your principles and will best serve our nation, state and county (not just self interest).

Do they value life Š from conception until natural death? Do they seek just (fair) solutions to the problems that confront society? Do they believe in the common good (what is best for all)? Do they promote a genuine concern for the poor, the weak, the frail, the vulnerable? How do they define marriage and family? Do they seek to make our communities safer?

If you havenÕt paid too much attention up until now, I would remind you that it is less than a month before the election. Now is the time to listen carefully to what the candidates are really saying about the issues.

Tuesday, October 17th Š St. Ignatius of Antioch Bishop of Antioch and a notable martyr of the early Church. Probably born in Syria, Ignatius was perhaps a disciple of Sts. Peter and Paul, or possibly St. John. One tradition declares that he was the child mentioned in Mt (18:1-6) who was placed by Christ among the Apostles. He was perhaps the second bishop of Antioch (according to Origen) or the third (according to Eusebius) and called Theophoros (God-bearer). Arrested by Roman authorities, he was sent to Rome for execution and, in the company of several soldiers, set out on the road to the Eternal City. Along the way Ignatius composed epistles (or letters) to the Christian communities of Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Rome, Philadelphia, Smyrna, and a farewell letter to Bishop Polycarp. The Letters of Ignatius have long been greatly honored by the Church for their eloquent, detailed glimpses of the Church. He died by being thrown to the wild beasts in the Roman Circus.

Religous Education

Last Saturday we celebrated the Rite of Election for the candidates (Confirmandi) who are beginning their final preparation towards Confirmation. Their parents presented each of their young adults to Fr. Dave, assuring him and our parish family that they have taken their formation seriously and are ready to be presented to Bishop Mengeling. We, the parish, showed our support for the Confirmandi on their journey as they presented their letters requesting the Sacrament of Confirmation. These letters will be sent to the Bishop.

Please keep our Candidates in your prayers by taking one of the flames with their names on it and keeping them in your daily prayers.

Letters will be sent out next week to the 9th grade parents asking for help with the reception following the celebration of Confirmation. All 9th grade families are asked to help host this reception in set-up, clean up, donating foods, or serving; so please call the office to let us know how you will help!

Confirmation will be celebrated on Saturday, November 11th, at the 4:30 Liturgy; please join us.

Just a reminder classes for Religious Education are cancelled Oct.15-19 to allow our youth in gr. 5-12 and adults to attend the Regional Mission at St. PatÕs.

ON THE JOURNEY

ON THE JOURNEY As some of you may already know, I was on vacation the past two weeks. One of the many interesting experiences we encountered in Greece, was two Sundays ago. In a country which is predominantly Greek Orthodox, finding a Roman Catholic Church was somewhat of a challenge. As it turned out, on the small island of Mykonos there was one of each and we celebrated Mass that day in eight different languages. The Greek speaking priest led us in our Latin responses while we all sang the songs in our native languages. What an experience it was bringing home in a very special way the universality of our faith and richness of our Catholic traditions.

ItÕs not too late to join the book of Exodus Bible study on Thursday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the Adult Formation Room. Hopefully it will put us in touch with our Jewish roots and provide a window of understanding as we follow the life of Christ.

GRIEF RETREAT is Sunday, Oct. 29, 2-5:00pm. This three hour workshop will address the emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects of mourning. The format of the program includes speakers and time to share mutual concerns and experiences. For more information call Marilyn Rhadigan at 229-8624.

Our Retirees Lunch Bunch meets this Thursday at 12:15. Bring a sack lunch and join us as we listen to Kathy Rigley, a parishioner and occupational therapist , providing us with some tips to prevent accidents and falls.

The Wednesday morning MOMS group will be offering a book discussion on Nov. 29 at 9:30 a.m. The book is Nicholas SparksÕ "The Notebook". If you would like more information about this or any of the MOMS activities, please call Jeanette Martin at 229-5197.

Yours on the journey, Marilyn

Flu shots are $10 or free with Medicare. This program is sponsored by McPherson Hospital and hosted by the Parish Nurse Ministry.
