THE SANDWICH GENERATION There is a radio commercial that refers to this "new" generation. They have children still at home and aging parents who need increasing care.
Over the last few months, some of our parish leaders have become aware of several of our folks in this predicament. Those of us who have lived this kind of situation think that we could offer some support and helpful information to those who find themselves going through it now.
So on Thursday, November 4, we are inviting all those who find themselves in that Care-Giver role to join us in the rectory basement meeting room. We would like to bring together those who have taken care of aging parents, relatives and friends with those who find themselves taking on that role now.
If you have any questions or suggestions about our Care-Givers Group you are welcome to talk to me or Arlene Callaghan (220-1693).
TEMPTED TO DESPAIR I generally keep up with world, national and local events. I read a daily newspaper, our local weekly paper and two news magazines. I listen to public radio in the morning during my workout and in the evening as I prepare and eat dinner. My point is, that I have an interest in current events and a fairly good grasp of what is happening in the world beyond the parish.
I have found events in Washington to be increasingly distressing over the last few months. But last week's Senate rejection of the nuclear test ban treaty leads me to anger and despair.
It frightens me to see petty politicians diminish the possibilities for a more peaceful, more stable world. Frankly, I do not believe their statements that the treaty was "flawed", only their grasp of truth. Nor is the White House justified in condemning the short sighted senators who put politics above peace and embarrassing a president over the common good of the world community. There was very little leadership on this from the White House.
Sadly, I watch the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House continually play political football on many issues. They toss the blame back and forth and show more concern for tripping each other than they do for people's health and safety in this nation and in the world. Although I pray for them, I find that each new fiasco leads me to repeat an old curse: "a plague on all three houses!"
I am now watching to see what happens with the latest attempt at campaign financing
reform. My hunch is that most of them don't want to see real reform. But until big money is
taken out of the system, real concern for the common good and the common citizen will only get
lip service.

Thursday, October 28; The Feast Simon and Jude, Apostles. Simon belonged to the Zealots, an anti-Roman party. According to tradition he was one of the first disciples of Jesus and he preached in Egypt and Mesopotamia, going to Persia with St. Jude, where they were both martyred. Jude, also known as Thaddeus, according to custom is considered the brother of St. James the Less and the reputed author of the Letter of St. Jude. He is properly venerated as the "patron of impossible cases.

Grief is a natural and normal reaction to loss, but sometimes the intensity of our emotions
can seem overwhelming. A New Day is a series of eight meetings designed to increase our
understanding of the stages of grief; offer some survival techniques; include prayer and Scripture
reflections and provide an opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar losses in
their lives. Our sessions will begin Sunday, November 7, at 7:30pm in the rectory lower level.
There is a cost of $10 for the New Day Journals. If you have any questions or want to register
by phone, call me at 229-8624. A registration sheet is available in the gathering area.

Each of us who is baptized shares in Jesus' mission to all nations and peoples. Today, with Catholics throughout the world, we are called to offer our special prayers and generous financial support, through the Propagation of the Faith, for the worldwide mission of Jesus.
We help mission priests, sisters, brothers, lay catechists, mission seminarians and Religious novices through our giving. They reach people in remote villages and city barrios, children, the elderly, refugees, the sick, orphans, the poorest of the world. They offer them the Good News of Jesus and they are good news as, in His name, they nourish spirits, teach young minds, heal the sick and strive for justice.
Please be as generous as possible. What we offer today will help missions around the world and here in the United States. And, please, pray every day for missionaries and for those they serve.

Prayer Intercessions may be filled out each weekend and placed in the basket located between the inside glass doors in our Gathering Area.
Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information.
The time after communion is a "Martha and Mary" time, a time for both action and prayer. The vessels which were used for communion must be purified, and we also need time for private prayer of thanksgiving.
The oldest form of purification was known as the ablution (washing) of the mouth. In the fourth century,St. John Chrysostom advocated that his people cleanse their mouths with water or a little bread after communion so that nothing of the Body or Blood of Christ would remain in their mouths. In the west, monasteries and churches had special fountains used specifically for this ablution. The cleansing of the vessels was also common and became linked to the ablution of the mouth. The presider would have water poured over his fingers into the cup and then he would drink the water.
In the Middle Ages, a variety of prayers accompanied the action which itself became more elaborate. First, all particles of the Body were carefully placed in the chalice and two washings occurred, one with wine and the second with wine and water. The prayers spoke of purity of heart, cleansing from all sin through the gift of Holy Communion. The assembly was also encouraged to pray during this time after communion. Various prayers of thanksgiving were composed throughout the centuries and passed on by memorization.
In the fifth century a prayer of conclusion or Post Communion was added, most likely out of desire to verbalize the thanksgiving of all. Like the opening prayer, its purpose was to collect all the prayers of those assembled in a single one voiced by the presider for all, this providing closure to the Communion Rite. Later in the Middle Ages the number of these prayers multiplied, but in the reforms of 1969 only a single prayer is used to conclude the rite. This prayer always asks that the mystery we have just celebrated will be effective in our lives and lead us to eternal communion with God.
There is a nationwide ministry available to traveling Catholics providing free information on the location of the nearest church and times of Masses on weekends and holy days. This service is available to all parishes by calling 1-800-627-7846 or checking the internet at www.masstimes.org.
