ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
MOVING TOWARD THE END
The Liturgical year is slowly moving toward its end and calls us to remember that this whole world will one day come to its end. Then the Lord Jesus will return in glory, raise up all those who have died, judge the living and the dead, and gather all who are His own into the eternal kingdom of His Father. That last day is celebrated on the feast of Christ the King. But as we move toward that feast, the Church reminds us to prepare ourselves for the day when we will meet the Lord. Two feasts are a part of this reminder:
ALL SAINTS DAY (Thursday, Nov 1) celebrates all those who are already with God. These are the "little" saints, not canonized or recognized by the Church, but rather the other saints our ancestors, family and friends the good and faithful people whom God has taken to Himself.
There are two Liturgies for this Holyday when we are obligated to participate in Mass: 9am & 7pm.
ALL SOULS DAY (Friday, Nov 2) celebrates all those men and women who are still on their way to God. These are the ones God is still perfecting as they are drawn into the Divine presence.
On All Souls Day, we lift them up to the Lord in prayer. We especially commemorate all those who have died during this past year as well as all our deceased family and friends. Again, there will be two Liturgies: a simple morning Liturgy at 9 am and the main Parish Liturgy will be at 7 pm in the evening.
THE END DAYS While it is important that we remember our life in this world is finite and that one day it will come to an end, it is also important that we do not live in fear.
The events of 9\11 and the subsequent military activity in Afghanistan seemed to have given new life to those who readily use them as proof that the end is at hand. Booksellers have seen increased sales of books predicting the last days. It is my firm hope that none of my readers will be among those so easily beguiled!
Since the months leading up to the year 1000, false prophets proclaimed that the end was at hand. Over the years since then, many more have made their appearance. Whole communities have formed around that conviction. The last day has come and gone several times and the only thing reliable about many of these false prophets is that they have made a profit with their prediction!
If someone offers to give or sell you a book predicting the end days, leave it behind!

THREE MINUTES MORE
Each weekend, a segment of the Liturgy is explained three minutes before the Liturgy begins. This column will offer further explanation and background on that segment.
THE OPENING RITES As you will see over the next few weeks, the Opening Rites of the Liturgy evolved over several hundred years. The earliest Roman Liturgy had none. During the day of persecution, the services were quiet and low key for fear of attracting attention. The Liturgy of the word simply began when everyone gathered.
The only opening rite we had originated in the synagogue and that was singing during the gathering. In the first century synagogue service, the first to arrive began singing the last five psalms of the Psalter (the 150 Psalms). This would continue until most had arrived, then the service began. For centuries, the Church continued this custom and later expanded to include other psalms. In the ninth century, hymns were especially composed for the Liturgy and were used in place of the psalms.
THE GATHERING HYMN Because we have gathered in the name of the Lord Jesus and He is present among us, the assembly rises to greet Him. The Gathering Hymn is the first communal prayer of the Liturgy. In many ways it is the most important of all the hymns in the Liturgy since it brings the assembly together in this musical prayer, and it sets the tone or mood of everything to follow. The choice of the hymn is usually dictated by the Gospel of the day or by the particular season of the Church year.
THE SIGN OF THE CROSS and GREETING Once the Gathering Hymn concludes, the presider leads the assembly in the sign of the cross and greets them.
When we were baptized, either as children or later in life, we were marked with the cross in the name of Christ and welcomed into the community of His Church. So at the beginning of every prayer, especially this great prayer, we reaffirm that commitment by signing ourselves with the cross and recalling our baptism in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Then the presider greets us in the name of the Lord who has gathered us around Him. These greetings are usually based on similar greetings found in the New Testament Letters.
"Warm the Children" Needs Shoppers - Each holiday season the Ann Arbor News collects cash donations to be used to purchase coats and clothing for needy school-aged children. "Warm the Children" needs adults willing to go shopping with one or two children and their parent at the Brighton Meijer Store. The shopping requires only one and one-half hours and you can select the time. We will be starting at the end of Oct. If you are interested in this wonderful holiday service, please contact Carol McGrath (517) 546-7053.
IMPORTANT REMINDER:
There are no Religious Ed/formation classes this week, Oct. 28, 31, Nov. 1. Classes resume on Sunday, November 4!
Please try to use this time off to spend with the family. Talk with your children about our faith and what it means to you as a family. Attend the services on All Saints and All Souls day and remember those in our families who have passed away. Share with your children family stories and traditions that have been passed down! But most of all try to spend time with our most precious treasures (our children and families of course!) in thanksgiving for who we are to each other.
We will be celebrating the Rite of Acceptance for First Penance children at the Sunday 9 am Liturgy on Nov. 4. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin to prepare for this Sacrament by which God will restore them to the life and holiness of their baptism. Please continue to pray for our Confirmation candidates as they journey in final preparation towards Confirmation.
I am still in need of a catechist (any High School youth need service hours?) for the Family program which meets twice a month. Please consider helping out and call me in the office.
If you have any questions be sure to e-mail me at
