ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

AS THE EARTH DIESÉDuring the fall, we watch the earth slowly die. The days are shorter; the sky is grayer; the trees are bare; the flowers and grass have died. All around us there are signs of the mortality of all life, including our own lives. It is no surprise that the Church chose November for her commemoration of those who have died.

The month of November begins with two Liturgies. The first is All Saints, which celebrates all those who have died and are now with Christ in glory. These are the known saints, those canonized (proclaimed) by the Church, but even more importantly, they are those unknown saints who are now with God. Among these are the good and holy people who have touched our lives. On All Saints Day, we gather "with them, to pray with those who stand around the throne of God".There will be two Liturgies on All Saints Day: 4:30 and 7 pm. (These times were chosen to accommodate our young people who attend religious ed at those times.)

The second commemorative Liturgy of November is All Souls Day, which is the next day, November 2. Like the day before, this Liturgy also commemorates those who have also died. But on All Souls Day, we pray for all those who have died and are still on their journey to God. For we believe that, if we are not ready to enter into God when we die, God continues to purify and cleanse us as we are drawn into eternal life. Unlike All Saints when we pray with those we celebrate, on All Souls Day we pray for the dead, lifting them up to God.

There will be two Liturgies on All Souls Day: 9 am and 7 pm. The main Liturgy will be at 7 pm, when we will especially pray for all those parishioners and family members of parishioners who have died since last All Souls Day. (Unlike All Saints Day, All Souls Day is not a holy day of obligation, so there will be religious ed.) YOU MISSED A GOOD ONEÉThose who attended the Regional Mission last week know that it was a wonderful experience. The speakers were wonderful and very insightful.

Thanks to Marilyn Rhadigan and all those who coordinated our participation in this event.

We did purchase a series of tapes which were made from the first Mission in Lansing, so the talks are a different than what we heard last week. But the essentials are still there and they should be worthwhile. The tapes will be in a parish library very near you soon! ANOTHER REMINDER Now is the time to be seriously studying the candidates for president, the US Senate, the US House, both the state senate and house, and the judicial candidates. Please try to find out more about those who are running for local offices including county commissioner as well.

Remember these people will represent you! Their principles should be a reflection of your own Christian values. Most of all take the time to read. The TV will give you very little on which to make an informed judgement. Please take the time to carefully study what the candidates are really saying about the issues so that you can vote for the candidates who best represent you and your convictions.

NO YOUTH GROUP

Religous Education

No more CCD! Many of us keep lapsing back and using this phrase, so I have done some research from the NCCL (National Conference of Catechetical Leadership)..CCD-Confraternity of Christian Doctrine- is what we used to call our Religious Education/ Formation. (For many of you, the word formation is also new.) This education involved the use of the Baltimore Catechism and memorization. Educators then discovered that children learn better when they are creatively involved. The whole person, not just the mind, needs to be engaged in the learning process. So we changed our methods, not the content in the way we teach religious education. The content of the Baltimore Catechism did not reflect the fullness of our Catholic tradition. It did not draw on the bible or the rich symbols and prayers of the ChurchÕs worship. It also did not center on Jesus Christ as the New Testament and our Liturgy do. Our faith is a loving, trusting relationship with Jesus Christ and a belief in the Catholic teachings, not just doctrine. Reminder as you come into the Worship area, notice the mobile of names over the Baptismal Font. Please pray for our youth who will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, November 11 at the 4:30 Liturgy. Volunteers are needed to help with the reception immediately following Confirmation. Please call Sr. Maryetta in the office.

The format includes a time for prayer, presentations, and sharing. Our break out sessions will include: coping with childrenÕs grief; miscarriage and early infant loss; dealing with the death of a parent; surviving after the death of a spouse; and coping with the loss of a friend or sibling. If you or someone you know has recently experienced the loss of a loved one through death please encourage them to come.
