ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

WHEN YOU VOTEÉNotice, I did not say if you vote, because voting is a responsibility and an obligation in a true democracy. So, when you vote, I would ask you to keep Gospel principles in mind.

It is especially important in a society where, according to many pundits, people vote their self-interest: how they will benefit. If Gospel principles do not shape our actions, including casting our ballot, then it is fair to question that personÕs commitment to discipleship.

Here are some Gospel principles to keep in mind: Among the most important is the sanctity of life, from conception until natural death. No person has the right to determine anotherÕs value, nor can we ever place a dollar value on another. A second principle is the commitment of the candidate or proposal to the protection and care of the vulnerable, poor and needy among us. A third principle is the common good which is as important as the rights of the individual. Beware of any candidate or proposal which would sacrifice the common good for the sake of individual rights or vice versa. A fourth Gospel principle is that people are more important than governments, systems and things. Undermining personal responsibility and accountability for oneÕs actions will ultimately dehumanize.

Please look beyond the slick advertising and slogans. Please remember to VOTE on Tuesday and take "the Gospel into the voting booth" with you! THANKSÉTo our high school youth, Bill Ross, Tom & Margaret Callaghan and all those involved with the project. The Haunted House was a screaming success! The set up and the "haunters & the guides" were terrific!

Thanks to the Community Life Team for the party in the hall! It was a fun filled event. CONFIRMATION Bishop Mengeling will be presiding at the 4:30 pm Liturgy next weekend. During the Mass, he will confirm 41 of our young people (along with a small additional group from St. Cornelius & Cyprian Parish from near Jackson.)

Please remember these young people in your prayer this week. Pray that these youth, who are our brothers and sisters, will be filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit so that they can assume full membership in our community and the Church.

Thanks to Sr. Maryetta and our Catechists for their sincere and consistent service to these young people helping them to prepare for this Sacrament!

Fr. Dave Howell

November 9 Ð Dedication of the Lateran Basilica The Lateran basilica was erected around the year 324 by the Emperor Constantine and is the cathedral of Rome. As the Cathedral of the Pope, the Lateran Church or Basilica is the head and mother of all churches. On Holy Thursday the Holy Father celebrates Mass in the Lateran as bishop of Rome surrounded by his clergy. For that reason this feast should remind all members of every diocese that they have been generated by the Lateran Basilica, and that by reason of their Baptism they are members of a particular local church. Moreover, they should realize that each local church has its origin in the mother-church of Rome. We should relate to the mother-church in Rome, going beyond our geographical confines to a sense of the universal Church. Just as the Apostle says: "We are all one in Christ".

PUTTING KIDS FIRST:

BALLOT PROPOSAL 1 On Tuesday, you will be asked to vote on a common-sense education reform ballot proposal. Remember: A YES vote tests teachers regularly in their academic subject matter. A YES vote protects public school funding. A YES vote will give parents in failing school districts the right to choose the best school for their child. A YES vote makes education in Michigan more accountable to every citizen. Put Kids First. Vote YES on Proposal 1.

Religous Education

Many things are happening within our Religious formation classes! First I ask that you keep in your prayers those children in our parish who celebrated the Rite of Acceptance this weekend to begin their journey towards their First Penance in March. Next weekend Bishop Mengeling will celebrate Confirmation at our 4:30 Liturgy. Rehearsal is Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:00pm for Candidates and Sponsors. Our confirmation youth spent last Saturday on retreat with Sr. Maryetta talking about what Confirmation means to them and how it will affect their lives. Thank you to all the adults who volunteered their day to chaperone! I also want to let you know that gently used coats of all sizes are being collected on November 11-12, and 18-19 in the barn. The Religious Education children are collecting them for the needy, so now is the time to clean out your closets! There is also High School youth jamboree on November 18 for all interested. All are welcome to attend, call Margaret in the office for details. Thank you also to the Kindergarten classes for showing us last week the saints they are!

ON THE JOURNEY

I recently received a poster in the mail that reads: Until you are convinced that PRAYER is the best use Of your time, you will not find time For PRAYER. (Hilary Ottensmeyer, O.S.B.)

I read it over several times and then put it in a frame. I began to recall the times in my life when prayer was the only course before me. There are many times in our lives when we donÕt have control of a situation or circumstance when we feel helpless. It is then that we are finally resort to prayer. Why does it take catastrophic situations to point out an obvious reality? "Everything goes better with "prayer" and parenting is no exception. If you would like to join other parents here at St. Mary Magdalen, to pray for our local school children, please contact Kathy LaTarte at 227-7994. She has been an active member of MOMS in Touch and is interested in starting one here.

Yours on the journey, Marilyn
