All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

ANOTHER DEACON Next Saturday morning I will participate in the Deacon Ordinations at St. Mary Cathedral in Lansing. I have known one of the men to be ordained, Bob Pienta, since 1981. Bob served his internship at St. Pat's last spring. He also acted as the master of ceremonies at our Dedication.

Another of the men who will be ordained is Jerry Vincke. Jerry will be joining us for long weekends over the next several months as part of his training in preparation for ordination to the priesthood in June. Jerry and I have known each other for a few years. But most of all he has heard a good deal about St. Mary Magdalen and he asked to be assigned here so that he could learn from us. Jerry will be here on weekends to assist at most of the Liturgies. He will preach, baptize and involve himself in as many activities as possible.

I know that you will welcome him when he comes. Officially, that should be after the first of the year, but I have a hunch we will see him a few times before that. MANY THANKS to Pat Daul and Jim Day for their repairs to the cross at the entrance of the property. Pat & Jim built the cross originally, so they fixed some of the cracks that had begun to grow and re-stained the cross. Thanks!!

THE SHRINE OF THE FIRE Some have noticed that since it was lit on All Saints Eve, the fire is no longer burning. It seems that it was not quite ready to be lit when we did it. Hopefully the last work will be done soon. In the meantime, we have kept the fire burning inside to re-light it later.

The shrine provides a place to light the new fire on Holy Saturday when we begin the Great Easter Vigil Celebration. This ceremony is the first of three announcements of the resurrection of Christ. The shrine will preserve the fire from Easter until the following Ash Wednesday when we will use it to burn the palms. The shrine will then remain dark from Ash Wednesday until Easter.

ADVENT EVENING OF PRAYER Mark your calendars for Monday, Nov 30. Everyone is invited to begin the season of Advent with this evening of prayer, quiet, reflection and sharing. Fr. Dave Howell

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information.

THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS The early Roman Liturgy had only two elements to the Preparation of Gifts. First, the gifts were brought to the altar. Then, when everything was ready, the presider went to the altar and prayed a prayer over the gifts. Usually the theme of this prayer was thanksgiving for these gifts which we are able to offer back to God.

During the ninth century, the medieval French (or Frankish) Church added to the original Roman Liturgy. Some of these additions were borrowed from the Liturgy of Constantinople and others were their own innovations.

The invitation to pray "Pray my brothers and sisters... was one of Frankish innovations. At first, the invitation was followed by a period of silent prayer. Even the Prayer over the Gifts was prayed quietly by the presider. Because it could not be heard, the prayer became known as the Secret.

Somewhere between 900-1000, people began to respond to the invitation to pray. A variety of responses can be found in ancient books. By the twelfth century, the present formula May the Lord accept this sacrifice... became the standard response. About this same time, this French addition to the Liturgy was also included in the liturgical practices of Rome.

Our present formula is a combination of both traditions. First the presider invites the assembly to pray. The assembly responds by asking the presider to offer this great Sacrifice of Thanksgiving, praying for them and the whole Church. Then he concludes the Preparation of the Gifts by praying the Prayer over the Gifts out loud.

ON THE JOURNEY

ON THE JOURNEY Liturgically speaking the year is almost ended. The last weekend of this month marks the beginning of advent and a new Church cycle. While the secular world is promoting sales and decorations, we are asked to spend some time reflecting on our spiritual preparations for the birth of the Savior. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks we can determine what kind of advent rituals we are going to observe in our families before the "outside" world takes hold of our time together. May this advent season be a holy and blessed one for all of us. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Please continue to pray for the children who will be confirmed by Bishop Mengeling on December 5. They are an awesome group of students and eager to receive the Spirit in their lives.

The religious education program is in need of a seventh grade catechist on Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:45 p.m. If you feel called to this ministry would you please let me know. It is a wonderful group of students who are eager to learn and share. Sister Maryetta
