11/19/00 ALL THINGS CONSIDERED THANKSGIVING Of all the holidays that are a part of our national calendar, Thanksgiving is truly my favorite. First proclaimed by George Washington, I believe it also stands as the oldest on our national calendar. Thanksgiving is not just a holiday; it is the very heart of Christian prayer. It flows from the heart of one who is truly conscious of what they have been given and it recognizes the real source of all that I have received. This Thursday we will celebrate Thanksgiving with Liturgy at 9 am. I invite you to come and give thanks to the one who is the source of every blessing. We are also invited to share some of what we have received with those who have less. Please bring boxed or canned food to share with the poor. As was done in ancient times, everyone will be invited to bring their gifts to the altar at the preparation of the gifts. A DAY OF PRAYER Next Sunday is the feast of Christ the King. It is the final Sunday of the Church year and celebrates our belief that the Lord Jesus will return to us in glory when time itself will end. It seems a fitting conclusion to the Church year, that we celebrate this feast as a special day of prayer for our families, our parish, our world and ourselves. From the end of the 11 am Liturgy until 6 pm, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed (displayed) in Holy Cross Chapel where we have weekday Liturgy so that everyone can come and spend some quiet time in prayer with the Lord, present in the Holy Eucharist. I really hope as many as possible will find some time on Sunday afternoon to come and spend some time with Christ, especially those who are Eucharistic Ministers and our Ministers of Prayer. At 6 pm, we will process with the Blessed Sacrament to the main worship area where will pray Evening Prayer together. Evening Prayer is a tradition even older than Christianity, its roots are found in the synagogue centuries before the coming of Christ. The early Church adapted the custom and over the centuries it evolved into two different forms. One form developed in parishes and the second form became common in monasteries and convents. Priests, sisters, deacons and many lay people individually pray the monastic form. The parochial or parish format survived until the early 1900Õs and has been revived again in the last 25 years. It begins with a hymn and a song of thanksgiving. Then two psalms are sung, each ending with a moment of quiet prayer. A reading from the Scriptures and a reflection follows. The Canticle of Mary, intercession, Our Father, a blessing and the greeting of peace conclude the prayer. Evening Prayer lasts about 25 minutes, but it is a peaceful and profound conclusion to a day that looks to the end. I hope you will participate! Fr.
