All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

THANKSGIVING We have many, many reasons to thank God. We have our lives and those with whom we share life. Our gifts, our talents, the good things of the earth and the promise of heaven. We have so very much. There is good reason for Thanksgiving.

In its origin, Thanksgiving Day was a religious observance which now has become a civic holiday. Some think it a bit odd, but we have never had a Thanksgiving Feast on our calendar. The reason is quite simple: Eucharist, which is the sacramental name of the Mass, means Thanksgiving.

Every celebration of Eucharist is a thanksgiving feast. We are thankful for what God has done, is doing and will do! While thanksgiving should be a daily experience for us, it is important for us to take the time to become even more aware of our reasons to be grateful. I invite you to join your fellow parishioners this Thanksgiving Day for Eucharist at 9 a.m. Come give thanks for what the Lord has done for you! Come give thanks for what He has done for us all! You are also invited to bring a gift of food for the poor, to share some of your blessings with those who have less.

ADVENT EVENING OF PRAYER Monday, Nov 30, we will have a special evening of reflection, prayer, quiet and sharing to begin the season of Advent. It will begin at 7 p.m. in the main worship area with Evening Prayer. Two reflections will follow, one by Marilyn the other by Sr. Maryetta. Quiet time for personal prayer and shared reflections will complete the evening. The program will end at 9 p.m. with some time for socializing afterward.

Advent's quiet and reflection often gets lost in the busy-ness of preparing for Christmas. Please consider this evening, which is an opportunity to prepare for Christ! Fr. Dave Howell

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information.

Every Liturgy celebrates the life, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus -- all that He did to share His saving life with us.

The Church calendar takes what we celebrate in a single Liturgy and spreads it out over the Seasons, Sundays and Feasts of the year so that we can better understand and live this wonderful gift. The specific Scripture readings and prayers of a particular Liturgy focus our attention on an aspect of His saving work.

The new Church begins on the First Sunday of Advent which this year starts on November 28 at 4 p.m. Initially, Advent looks forward to the completion of Christ's saving work by His glorious return. By the end of the season the focus changes as we celebrate how He first came among us. This, of course leads to our celebration of Christmas.

The Liturgical Christmas Season begins on Dec 24 with the commemoration of the birth of Christ. But the feasts of the season celebrate why He came to share our life.

We return to Ordinary Time (the green season) with the feast of the Baptism of our Lord which celebrates the inauguration of Jesus' public ministry. The theme of the first weeks of this season is our call to follow Him.

Where is Christ leading us? The answer comes in the seasons of Lent and Easter. He calls us to take our cross and follow Him through His passover from death to new life.

The return to Ordinary Time after Pentecost is an invitation to grow in this new life (which is one of the reasons the liturgical color is green). Finally this growth is meant to bear fruit through lives of faith and loving service. Thus the final weeks of this season begin to talk about end times culminating in the feast of Christ the King. This celebrates the return of Christ when He will gather all those who have grown in the life of the kingdom.

ON THE JOURNEY

Once again as the Church year comes to an end, the lectionary readings pointedly reflect on the end times. Each year we hear them but seldom does the message really take hold. I'm sure that in the fall of 1996, as my husband discussed these readings with the RCIA group he never anticipated that it would be his last meeting with them. It became one of those prophetically astute moments when he told them that he was no longer afraid to die. In the past, when he and I had talked about dying, he had expressed his anxiety and even questioned the depth of his faith. That Tuesday evening was different.

The readings from these past three weeks call all of us to be different, to live each day like it was our last and to meet it with hope, faith and confidence. Yours on the journey, Marilyn
