All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

WELCOMING THE WORD The more observant will have noticed that a new Lectionary was carried into the assembly today. It is not just a new book, it is a New Lectionary. It has been in process for many years and includes some significant changes. First, it expands the number of readings, especially for several feasts. It provides a more accurate translation of the ancient Hebrew and Greek into modern, American-English. The language has also been changed to become more inclusive. Most folks won't notice much more than the new book. But it does provide us with a greater exposure to the Sacred Scriptures and the opportunity to better understand the Word of God.

ADVENT EVENING OF PRAYER Advent is the "lost" season of the Church year. The busy-ness of preparing for and celebrating the holidays often prevents us from preparing for the Holydays. That is why we are offering a special evening of reflection, prayer, quiet and sharing to begin the season of Advent.

It will begin on Monday, November 30 at 7 pm in the main worship area with Evening Prayer. Two reflections will follow, one by Marilyn the other by Sr. Maryetta. There will also be quiet time for personal prayer and shared reflections will complete the evening. The program will end at 9 am with some time for socializing afterward. I hope you will be able to join us.

CONFIRMATION Next weekend, Bishop Mengeling will preside at the 4:30 Liturgy to confer the Sacrament of Confirmation. Thirty-two of our young people will complete their initiation into the Church and become full members. Most of all, they will receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit-ual gifts of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, right judgment, fortitude, courage and the wonderment of God's presence. Please remember them in your prayers. Fr. Dave Howell

PRAYER LIST

Please pray that the sick will respond to God's healing will, especially: Ken, Lynn and children, Jeanette, Bob, Claudette and child, Pete, Vivian, Jane, Timothy, Zora, Mary Kay, Wayne, Ed, Merle, Mike, Tom, Keith, Ruth, Mary, Karen, Victor, David, Kenneth, and Roland.

NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE

Over 800 Catholic Churches nationwide will be participating in this night of prayer and adoration in reparation for the murder of the innocent preborn and helpless ones in our society. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed at St. John's, Hartland on December 8 from 8:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 9. Throughout the evening there will be a 15 decade rosary, silent prayers and adoration to God.

ON THE JOURNEY

Once again we are flooded with the same message hustle, hustle, spend, spend. As our anxiety levels increase it becomes harder and harder to recall what the bottom line really is, but as we reflect on past Christmas' it is not the gifts or the menu that we recall, but the people. Jesus came for the people. How did his birth get so distorted? Somehow fancy decorations, elaborate meals and mechanical toys don't seem to fit in the manger. Here's to all of us having an Advent season that is more relaxed and reflective of the real meaning of Christmas. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

There will be a Rite of Acceptance for all the children who will be receiving their First Communion this year on Sunday, December 6 at 11:00 Liturgy. We ask that you pray for all the children who will be receiving sacraments this year. I would like you to know how rewarding it is to go into classrooms and see such dedicated catechists and aides working with the children and seeing religious education come alive. Thanks to all who make our program so special. Sister Maryetta
