All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

GREAT EXPECTATIONS This weekend 32 were confirmed by Bishop Mengeling. The Sacrament of Confirmation marks the completion of their incorporation into the Body of Christ, the Church. They become full members and share responsibility for the mission of the Church and this parish.

In the celebration with Bishop Mengeling, those being confirmed renew the promises of their Baptism. The promises made by their parents long ago, they now make themselves before the bishop and the whole Church. This public commitment is then confirmed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The original meaning of the word confirm is to make strong with. In this sacrament, the commitment of those confirmed is strengthened by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Personally, I am very impressed with this group of young people. I look forward to their growing involvement in our community, especially as they grow in the gifts of the Spirit.

BUILDING TOWARD CHRISTMAS The feast of the Immaculate Conception is part of our preparation for Christ's birth. It celebrates how God prepared for the birth of His Son by specially gracing the life of His mother from the very first moment of her life. The Liturgies for this holy day of obligation will be at 9 am and 7 pm. I hope you will be a part of the celebration which honors Mary, who as the immaculately conceived, is the patron saint of our country.

ARE YOU READY FOR CHRIST? While many are scurrying to get ready for Christmas, the season of Advent invites us to get ready for Christ. The Sacrament of Penance is an important part of that preparation. It celebrates more than just the forgiveness of sin. Penance restores us to holiness of our Baptism. (That's why we located the Reconciliation Chapel right next to the font.)

There are three communal celebrations coming up this week: Wednesday at 7:30 at St. Agnes in Fowlerville; Saturday at 9 am at St. Pat in Brighton and next Sunday at 3 pm at St. John on M-59. I hope you will take advantage of the Sacrament of Penance as a way of preparing for Christ! Fr. Dave Howell

ON THE JOURNEY

I'd like to express a special note of thanks to everyone who helped make this year's Hoe Down such a success. Steve Assenmacher's calling kept things moving inside and the bonfire kept things ablaze outside. An honorable mention goes to Barb Colley for her coordination and work in putting it all together. Once again, thank you everyone! Yours on the journey, Marilyn
