All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

ARE Y0U READY FOR CHRIST? When I have a party or gathering at my house, I spend lots of time in preparation: setting the table, cooking the food, etc. When everything is just about ready for my guests, I get myself ready.

Most have spent a lot of time preparing for Christmas: shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating, sending cards, etc. Even as you finish up the last of all these things, I would encourage you to remember to also prepare yourselves for Christmas.

The Sacrament of Penance is an important part of our preparation for the coming of Christ. Penance is more than the forgiveness of our sins. It is the handing over of our sin to make room for Christ who fills us with the gift of His life.

OUR FIRST COMMUNAL PENANCE SERVICE will take place on Monday at 7:30 pm. It provides the opportunity for us as a community and as individuals to open ourselves to the Lord's mercy and life. It will begin with the Word of God, so that we might listen to what God has to say to us. After the homily, everyone will be invite to look within for the areas of sin in our lives. Following this, we will pray a common Act of Contrition.

When the communal preparation is complete, there will be time for each of us to individually confess our sins. Five other priests will join me in the celebration. Each penitent will come forward and individually confess their sin and then tell the confessor what they intend to do for penance. (The service sheet will list a number of possible penances from which to choose.)

When the individual confessions end, the priests will re-assemble in front. In the name of Christ and the Church, they will pray together the prayer of absolution over those who have confessed their sins. The service will close with a greeting of peace and common thanksgiving. The whole thing should last about an hour.

For those who are unable to attend this service, individual celebrations of Penance are scheduled for Tuesday from 11-12 noon and Wednesday from 11-12 noon and from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.

Again it is my hope that as many as possible will use this opportunity to prepare themselves for the gift of Christmas -- Christ! Fr. Dave Howell

THE STAFF

The staff of St. Mary Magdalen would like to extend to all of you a very Blessed Christmas and may you experience the love, peace, joy and hope of the Lord during this Holy Season.

ON THE JOURNEY

ON THE JOURNEY Once again, I find myself holding on to the hope that in the last prevailing hours before the "big kids" return home and the chaos of a Pence family Christmas begins, I will be able to finish the endless list of tasks I had compiled months before.

Somehow, I can't quite see the Blessed Mother sitting in the stable with a yellow legal pad crossing off completed projects before her Son was born. Nor did she spend her advent estimating how many more trips to the mall it would take to achieve bliss. When did things change?

I'm still in search of the perfect Christmas. I heard there was one once. In the meantime, I hope yours is beautiful and full of love and peace. Yours on the journey, Marilyn
