All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

A BLESSED CHRISTMAS! This prayer is extended to you and your families from all the staff of St. Mary Magdalen: Leo Camden, who cares for our buildings and property; Margaret Callaghan, who pastors our junior and senior high youth; Sr. Maryetta, who directs the faith formation of our youth; Josie Doucette, the secretary for formation; Dave Scharf, our deacon; Kay Thurmon, our parish secretary and book keeper; Marilyn (Pence) Rhadigan, who directs the faith formation of adults; and myself BEGINNING THE HOLY YEAR Our Catholic Communion throughout the world looks forward to the coming millennium with great anticipation and joy. For it marks not only the 2,000th anniversary of the Savior's birth, but the hope that this Christmas will mark a rebirth of holiness and faith in the lives of us all. During the Midnight Liturgy in Rome and in every cathedral in the world, a special door will be opened to symbolize our abiding hope that all people will "open the doors of their hearts and minds to Christ!" This event will be most dramatic at St. Peter's, where the first holy door will be opened. This huge doorway has been locked and bricked up since the last holy year (1975). The pope will unlock the door and open it, then he will tap on the brick wall, which, thanks to a hydraulic lift, will fall back and be carried away. Then the holy father will be the first of millions of the faithful to enter through that doorway over the next year. The symbolism and pageantry have only one purpose: to invite us to enter into this 2,000th year of salvation as individuals who deeply desire the gift of Christ. Over this next year there will several opportunities enabling us to respond to that invitation. Our own parish retreat in February Spirit 2000 and regional retreat on prayer in October. We are also planning special days of prayer over the course of the coming year. This January, we will begin a Catholic Catechumenate. This is in response to requests that several have made over the years. They have watched the people going through the formation process of becoming Catholic and expressed the wish that they could experience what those folks are going through. The Catholic Catechumenate is intended for "cradle Catholics" who would like to respond to the call for a deeper understanding of their faith. OPENING OUR "HOLY DOORS" New frames will transform the doors to our worship area this week, creating a set of holy doors for our community. Once in place, the doors will blocked off until we enter them for the 11:15 New Year's Eve Liturgy. I hope you will be able to join this event, as together we enter into the Great Jubilee year with the Lord! (Special thanks to our K of C who, after the Liturgy, will provide a glass of champagne or sparkling cider to everyone for a toast!) With a prayer that the blessing of Christmas will be yours all year long,
Fr. Dave Howell

Youth Group

Tom and I would like to extend our best wishes for a memorable Christmas celebration today and throughout the whole year. May we all not forget to include His birth in our celebrating!

As we all begin a new year, there are many exciting things that await us. Tom and I are already busy preparing for the birth of our first child. The youth are busy planning for a ski trip this winter, more fund-raisers, a state-wide youth rally in April, and participation in a Young Neighbors week long work camp to take place in the summer. We are also planning to extend our leadership team with new faces and ideas. It will prove to be a busy and fulfilling year.

M.U.D. News

Our monthly activities have all proven to be successful. I would like to thank all the adult volunteers who help with the planning and chaperoning of the events. Without your help, the functions could not happen. Thank you. We will continue our monthly activities into the new year. Information for the January function will come next week. In February, we will be participating with St. Pat's in "The Blast". In March we will be attending a Jr. High Youth Rally in Lansing put on by the Diocese. Like the Sr. High youth group, it will also be a fulfilling year for us.
Thank you. Margaret Callaghan

ON THE JOURNEY

Merry Christmas! Have you thought about giving yourself a gift? Giving something to yourself is probably the last thing on your mind right now. But giving yourself the gift of time spent in one of our adult programs could be one of those gifts that keep on giving.

If you've ever felt like nothing was going right in your life and tried to figure out why, our study of the Book of Job may help, beginning Thursday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m., daycare will be available. Our second winter offering is an opportunity to experience the catechumenate in a special way. Beginning Tuesday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m., Fr. Dave will host a "Neo-Catechumenate" for those who were baptized "a while ago"and would like to join the catechumens in their special journey to Easter. As you give Christ's peace and love to others, don't forget yourself. May your holiday be happy and blessed!
Yours on the Journey, Marilyn

CATCH THE SPIRIT

Spirit 2000 is the theme for the all parish retreat February 6-9, here at St. Mary Magdalen. All other activities in the parish will be suspended so we can participate in these four days of spiritual renewal. Fr. Rudy Papes will be preaching at all the weekend Masses and then begin the retreat Sunday evening at 7:30. On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday there will be reflections in both the morning after the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy and a different presentation in the evening at 7:30. We will have refreshments, daycare and an opportunity to socialize after both sessions. Please mark your calendars for these four special days in the life of our parish. If you would like to help the "E" Team on any of these days, please call Marilyn at the office, 229-8624. CARE GIVERS MEETING - For the January meeting, we have invited Carol Rostar from the Livingston County Department of Mental Health to join us and provide an overview of the programs available in the county and the state, such as where we can obtain resources for a fee and at no fee to assist in the daily care of our loved ones. We invite you, your family members, friends and neighbors to join us. Although we usually meet on the first Thursday of the month, we have changed the January date to the 13th. The place is the same, the lower level of the rectory at 7:30. For thrther information call Fr. Dave or Arlene Callaghan, 810-220-1693.

Religious Education

May all of you experience the love of the Lord during this holy season! As we think about the new year, the religious education program will focus on continuing to allow the children to grow in their faith. The junior high students will be participating in the BLAST along with the students from St. Pat's. We will offer a family lenten evening to explore how we can grow in our faith as a family. May 2000 bring us anticipation, growth and the challenge to grow in our faith.
Sister Maryetta

Many religious, for most of their history, received only modest stipends; they had no insurance or pension plan, and weren't eligible for Social Security. Your contribution to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps ensure adequate retirement funding for more than 45,000 elderly and infirm religious who dedicated their lives to ministry and prayer. More than 96 percent of contributions has been distributed in grants to religious institutes. Please be generous next week!
