ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

Since I am on vacation (I will be back In the office on Thursday), I thought I would pass on to you this request. I commend it to your charity.

Last fall, five parish members went to Medjugorje in Boznia, on a pilgrimage where Our Lady appeared to five young children in 1981.

We saw many bombed out homes and displaced families. Despite their suffering, Croation Catholics living there have a very deep faith, and it seems their hearts are always open to the word of God (A faith that I have not witnessed before!)

Not far from where we stayed there is an orphanage that was begun by Sister Josipa. One hundred twenty orphans, ranging in age from four or five to nineteen, live and depend on Sr. Josipa and the orphanage, which operated totally on donations (provided by God). These children are so polite, so self-disciplined, and loving! The loneliness in the eyes of many is heartbreaking, yet their smiles are extremely rewarding. And a hug is worth a million.

We had the privilege of visiting the orphanage, celebrated Mass and enjoyed an evening meal with them. Several of the teenage orphans came daily to the hotel where we stayed and prepared meals for us. The stipends, which the fifteen in our group collected, went directly into a savings account for their future. Then we pitched in some money for the orphanage itself.

I asked Sister if I could bring home two children who especially stole my heart. [Truly, I would have brought them home and cared for them here in Brighton.] One was a little boy who continuously shared a smile with me; the other was a teenage girl, whose expression looked so forlorn. Yet her eyes lit up while she sang at Mass and again later when I gave her a smile and a hug. Sister immediately said, "Oh no!" in her broken English, then added, "You find some other way to help."

The only way I know is to donate some dollars to help run the orphanage, clothe and feed the children, most of whom have experienced the ravages of war and seen more death and destruction than most of us have and hopefully ever will.

My request is, if you have a dollar or two that you could give to help this orphanage, there will be a box for your donation in the gathering area. (Checks should be made payable to St. Mary Magdalen.)

Joe and Monique Weis are returning at the end of the month to work with the orphans for a few weeks, and surely they would be thrilled to hand-deliver our donation to the orphanage! Thanks so much for just a little; all added together, we can help a lot! Joanie Monforton

I had a wonderful privilege last week! To see catechists and aides in their faith is an awesome gift. The catechists explored the Lord as the potter and how He is creating us all anew. Each year, our catechists grow intellectually as well as spiritually and as a result our children also are growing in their faith and their spirituality. May we continue to pray and journey with our Religious Education program. The program grows deeper and deeper as people are learning and growing. We all should challenge ourselves to grow in our faith. Plan to participate in one adult education gathering so that you too may continue to grow in your faith.

We leave you with a thought for the week from Derek, 3rd grade, " The kingdom of God is quiet and beautiful and has many of my favorite things. It reminds me of being in a tree house."
