All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY brings our celebration of Christmas to a close. In many Catholic countries, the twelfth day of Christmas is both a holy day and a holiday. (In this country the feast is moved to the nearest Sunday, which is why we celebrate it on the third rather than the sixth of January.) In many places in Europe and Latin America, the feast of the Epiphany, rather than Christmas, is the day for gift giving. This is to imitate the Magi who gave gifts to the Christ-child.

MANY THANKS to all those who were a part of our Liturgical celebrations of these holy days. Those who worked on the environment (decorating) did a wonderful job! They re-used many of those things which we used at the school and re-fashioned them for our use here.

The nativity set in the Gathering Area is the handiwork of Katie Barazsu. She has spent countless hours painting, firing and finishing the several large ceramic pieces which make up the scene of Bethlehem. It has been a real labor of love, and we are very grateful to her for all her work.

I also want to thank all those whose music added so much to our Liturgies. Over fifty musicians and singers added to our prayer. Personally, I found the mix of young and old (rather than separate choirs) a genuine expression of our community's worship, inviting the youth to grow.

Lastly, I want to thank all the other Liturgical ministers who rehearsed, prepared and came earlier than usual to serve others. Each of these folks added so much to making this first Christmas in "our new home" both prayerful and memorable.

WELCOME, JERRY! Next weekend, Jerry Vincke will begin his liturgical internship with us. Jerry is completing his graduate studies in theology at Sacred Heart Seminary and will be joining us on weekends over the next several months to prepare for ordination to the priesthood in June. As you may remember, he was ordained a deacon last November.

He will be assisting at the weekend Liturgies, preaching, baptizing and assisting in several ways as a part of his final preparation for ordination. Jerry has heard that our Liturgies are pretty prayerful, so he asked if he could join us to learn. I know that you will both welcome him and help him in the months ahead. Fr. Dave Howell

ON THE JOURNEY

Guided by the light of their faith, three wise men find the infant Messiah. Like the Wisemen, it is our faith that leads us to Christ and that same faith that sustains us on our journey. It sounds so simple until we experience periods when clouds and bad weather block our vision of the light, and we stand temporarily paralyzed, wondering which way to turn. It is then that patience and prayer become our greatest allies. May the light of faith shine brightly for you this year with very few dark or cloudy days. Yours on the journey, Marilyn
