ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

CONGRATULATIONS DAVE Although he has chosen not to attend, this weekend our deacon, Dave Scharf, graduates from Loyola University of New Orleans, LA. Dave participated in a three-year program to obtain his masters degree in pastoral ministry. The classes were taken in Chelsea with a group of other people engaged in pastoral ministry in our diocese.

It has been a long journey for Dave. He spent almost five years in the formation program of the diocese and then the Loyola program on top of that. On behalf of all of us, congratulations, Dave!

DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL We are now in the fourth week of our annual Diocesan Services Appeal or DSA. The monetary pledges and gifts collected in this appeal fund over 30 different services offered by the larger, diocesan Church.

There are many services that help parishes like ours accomplish their missions. This year our goal is $51,850! As of last Sunday, $45,665 has been pledged or donated. So far, 211 households have contributed 88% of our parish goal. If you have not yet made a pledge or gift to DSA, I invite you to join me in doing so.

CALLED TO SERVE In his letter to the Corinthians (I Cor 12: 4-6), St. Paul tells us that there are a variety of gifts, ministries and works. Each of these comes from the Spirit and each is given for the common good.

So what are your gifts? Is there a ministry that would help them grow as you share them? What will you do for God’s sake? How will you help the kingdom grow?

Throughout the Easter Season, those who were received into the Church at the Easter Vigil are asking themselves these questions. It is important that each of us asks ourselves the same questions.

Again and again in the Gospel, Jesus calls us to use our gifts for the service of others and to build up His Kingdom. He tells us to let our light shine so that others may see our good works and give glory to the Father. (Mt 5. 14). He also tells us to make good use of our talents (Mt 18. 23ff). In fact, the use of our time, talent and treasure is the most frequent topic of Jesus’ teachings!

On Pentecost Sunday (June 2\3), everyone will be invited to join one of the many ministry teams that are a part of parish life. In the coming weeks, please prayerfully consider your many gifts, talents and interests, and the opportunity to share these afforded by a ministry team. (A complete listing will be inserted in next week’s bulletin.)

Let your light shine…

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

Today’s reading from Revelation offers a vision of the City of God, the new Jerusalem. "But," the bishops’ pastoral on stewardship reminds us, "that ‘life to come’ is in continuity with this present life through the human goods, the worthy human purposes, which people foster now."

WORD AMONG US

To encourage each of us in prayer and the Eucharist, special editions of The Word Among Us magazine for June are available in the gathering area. This year’s special issue brings alive St. Luke’s story, about the disciples on the road to Emmaus, as they met Jesus in one of the first Masses in the early Church. In addition, there is a down-to-earth article on the history of the Mass, stories of healing and restoration through the Eucharist, and a short biography of St. Peter Claver.

FOR YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Free Professional Car Seat Safety Inspections will be conducted Sunday, June 1 here at the church. Please look for the sign-up sheets in the gathering area. If this is not conducive to your schedule, AAA of Brighton will also have "check-ups" June 18!

On behalf of everyone involved with the Livingston County Senior Nutrition Program, we would like to thank you so much for your generous donation of the wonderful gift baskets you made for the Brighton homebound seniors. You really made their day. The baskets you so thoughtfully put together let them know that someone cares about them. We truly appreciate your kindness and generosity.

Our Religious Education/Formation classes recently came to a close with wonderful celebrations inside and out of the classrooms. Two of our second grade classes put on a slide show with music and sign language for their "Resurrection Celebration." Some of our 8th grade classes cooked outside in a motor home, and other classes played such games as "Who Wants To Be A Christianaire," and Catholic Jeopardy, Hollywood Squares and more while reviewing their vocabulary words from this year! Each class celebrated their learning and faith sharing this year.

Thank you to all whom helped out this year during the class times as hall monitors, Mary’s office organizers (we’re still not done if anyone has spare time!), or as class substitutes. All of you helped to make things easier. As for the catechists and assistants, we all thank you for your time and energy!

Thank you to all our parents and families for your dedication getting your children to class each week. May God bless you as you enjoy your summer off from classes.

JOURNEY WITH JESUS (JWJ)

Thanks! Mary

Congratulations to Devin Willis, Amanda Walters, Andrea Nashar, Meghan Hillman, and Ian Rife who all applied for the Diocesan Youth Leadership Camp and were accepted. It is a faith filled, God filled week that takes place in June. There the teens will learn leadership skills to bring back to our youth group meetings. Sign up is necessary for the graduation breakfast on June 3. The sign up sheet is in the gathering space.

The Cedar Point trip has been rescheduled for Monday July 9, Hartland schools will still be in session on June 20. I will need chaperones.

Saturday June 2, is our Sr. high dance from 7-10pm in the social hall. The cost is $3. Bring a friend and come join us.

Tuesday June 5, from 7-8:30, I will be holding an adult meeting. I am looking for adults who would like to be a part of the youth programs here at St. Mary Magdalen. There are many ways to be involved. Come and find out how you can be a part of the great things that go on. Be sure to bring your planning calendars.

M.U.D (6, 7 and 8 graders)

If you are interested in being a part of the planning for this group, plan to attend the June 5 meeting mentioned above.

ON THE JOURNEY

Last Sunday at the 11am Liturgy, the parents who have been preparing for the baptism of their children brought them forward and formally presented them as candidates for baptism. This is actually the first part of the Rite of Baptism, but the Sacrament itself will take place at another time.

On Monday evenings, Sr. Maryetta and I are facilitating an eight week program on grief entitled, "A New Day". If you or someone you know has recently lost someone close to them, please consider joining us in Holy Cross Chapel at 7:30 p.m. It’s not too late to join.

Yours on the journey, Marilyn

FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

St. Paul speaks of the fruits of the Holy Spirit in contrast to the bitter fruits of our sin. The Spirit produces in us "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Catechism, #736). But if we abandon God’s help, the result can only be "immorality, impurity, idolatry, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissension, faction, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, and the like" (Gal 5:19-23).

Because we have experienced at least the impulse to the latter in ourselves and have seen at least the appearance of them in others, we can come to appreciate how great is the gift of the Spirit. Because its fruits seem so normal and natural, we may tend to forget they can only be the gifts of God. Our "remembering" is the gift of faith, the power of transformation within us.

As we select one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit let us resolve to improve that quality within ourselves throughout the coming year.

Some of you may think that you need to know a lot about Liturgy to become a member of THE WORSHIP TEAM. You don’t!…..What you do need is a desire and a willingness to learn…a love for the liturgy...and a love for the Eucharist.

Are you artistically inclined, perhaps handy with a needle? It is the objective of THE ART & ENVIRONMENT TEAM to introduce parishioners and visitors to the seasons and special feasts of the church year from the time they turn into the drive at St. Mary Magdalen.

Join Fr. Dave and the Worship or Art & Environment Teams to help others grow in their understanding and experience of worship.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION — Volunteers are still needed to deliver food to St. Anne’s and Mary Lou Brown Mission on Memorial Day Weekend, as well as June 24 and July 22. Please sign up in the gathering area.
