ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

EVENING of INFORMATION & PRAYER Bishop Mengeling and a panel of experts in social work and law enforcement will be here to address the continuing revelations of the abuse of children and minors by priests. The evening will include information on the issue, an explanation of the policies to prevent abuse by our diocese and time for participants to ask questions of the bishop and the panel. The evening will open and close with prayer for the healing of all those injured by abuse.

The meeting is open to everyone in our region. Our parish will host the evening this Sunday, May 19 from 7 to 8:30 pm in our parish hall.

A DAY of PRAYER & PENANCE Bishop Mengeling has asked everyone in our diocese to observe Friday, June 7 as a day of prayer and penance for the healing of all the victims of abuse.

It is especially appropriate, considering that June 7 is the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is the feast that celebrates the mercy and love Jesus revealed in His passion, death and resurrection.

Our prayer will begin with the Liturgy of the Sacred Heart at 9 am in the church. As the Liturgy closes, the Blessed Sacrament will be brought to Holy Cross Chapel (near the offices). I ask all those who can, to come and spend time in prayer petitioning the Lord for the gift of healing. The time of quiet prayer will end with a special Prayer for Healing Service at 5 pm.

I ask all of us, whether we can come to church or not, to take some time to pray on June 7 for the healing of the victims and the Church. We are also asked join penance to our prayer. These penitential practices can take the form of fasting, abstinence, works of charity or self-denial.

SIGN UP sheets are in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the Gathering Area for all those who can commit themselves to 30 minutes of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament on June 7. When we leave the Holy Eucharist exposed for prayer as will happen on the feast of the Sacred Heart, it is very important that we always have a couple people in the room.

If you can make a commitment for 30 or more minutes, please sign up!!

BACK LIGHTS You may have noticed some work being done in the back part of the parking lot. What we are doing is adding the necessary lights we neglected to install four years ago.

Near the end of the building process, we decided to pave all of the parking area needed for both this first phase of construction and the entire area need for the future as well. One of the things we neglected to do was to add the lighting. So we are doing that now.

I went to my nephew’s First Communion last weekend in Virginia. I couldn’t help but compare it to our Liturgies here! We are so blessed with not only our staff but with all those involved in the various weekend Liturgies! We were not greeted with a smile and a book! The music was not as wonderful as ours is here (very important part of Liturgy to get everyone involved!). With the ministry fair this weekend, sign up somewhere! Be a part of the fabulous parish life we have going on here! Make a difference!

Have a good week! Mary mmahar@parishmail.com.

WELLNESS PROGRAM

This is the last week of the 6-week wellness program. This week’s healthy habit: build muscles through strength training, for a minimum of 15 minutes, 3 times a week.

Strength training is important to your body because strength training 3 times a week can improve your cholesterol profile, lower blood pressure, improve glucose metabolism, boost bone mineral density, and increase gastrointestinal activity. In improving those aspects of your body, you are also reducing risks of heart disease, diabetes, and colon cancer.

Remember to continue the healthy habits from the past five weeks - physical activity, drinking eight cups of water a day, eating 2-3 fruits and 3 vegetables a day, and drink or eat 2-3 servings of dairy products a day.

The Wellness Program meets on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30pm here at St. Mary Magdalen. (Come early if you would like to walk before the meeting). Any questions, call Maureen Crowell (810) 227-3734, Pam Evancho (810) 227-0797 or Tammy Gless (810) 227-3392.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The ARC of Livingston County, an agency serving persons with developmental disabilities, needs volunteers to help with social events, transporting people to work, doctor appointments, church, shopping, social and sporting events. Also needed are people to help out in the office, answering phones, mailings, etc. Call Sandy Bader 517-546-1228, with questions or to volunteer.

Putting Faith into Action:

One aspect of Jesus’ job on Earth was to show us how children of God should live. He asked us to put God first, to pray daily, but he also gave us very clear directions about how to treat each other. When we do good works for the people around us, Jesus regards that as having done it for him.

"Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me." (Matthew 25:34-36)

Jesus spent all of his time on Earth serving others. He didn’t just serve the important or powerful; the ones who could make a big impact. Jesus served the very poor, the outcasts, the sick, those in jail. In other words, he served those who needed it most.

In fact, the Church teaches that we must do what we can to care for one another, especially those who need it most. "Faith, if it has not works is dead" (James 2:17). Following Jesus’ instructions and Church tradition, Catholics are called to practice "Corporal Works of Mercy."

National Relief Network: Attend a week of service work. Members of our parish can participate in a service project to help poor people recover from some natural disaster. It is likely we will be going to North Carolina where Hurricane Floyd went through in 1998. There are still thousands of homes, which need repair or demolition, and people are living in temporary Federal housing.

Our trip, by motor coach, is scheduled for the week of Sunday, July 14 thru Sat., July 20. Our group would make up one team. The cost is about $325 per person, which covers the bus, food, and lodging (at a local church camp, school, or someplace similar). Fund raising opportunities are available to cover individual’s costs. One day of the trip is for relaxing and scheduled sightseeing. Contact Jan Carpenter at -227-5269.
