All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

THE FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT In his letter to the Galatians (chapter 5), Paul talks of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. These are the personal qualities or characteristics which result from the presence of the Spirit of Christ within us. The fruits of the Spirit include: love, joy, patience, peace, faithfulness, kindness, self control, endurance, generosity, gentleness, chastity and goodness.

As you left the Liturgy today we asked you to take a flame from the baskets. These flames listed the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Over the next weeks and months ahead, please pray for the growth of this quality in your life.

LINKING THE LITURGY TO LIFE The next two weekends are special feasts on the Church calendar. The first is the Feast of the Holy Trinity, which will be celebrated next Sunday and the Feast of Corpus Christi which will come the following Sunday. Both these celebrations flow from the revelation of the Holy Spirit which we celebrate this weekend.

RENEWAL of MARRIAGE VOWS As a part of our celebration of Trinity Sunday, we are inviting all our couples to renew their marriage vows during the 9 am Liturgy. The reason flows from the liturgical celebration itself.

COMMUNITY LIFE TEAM This is the ministry of "fun and frolic". Those who sign up for this new ministry have the task of FUN-raising - to bring us together in social settings to help build community among us.

Trinity Sunday celebrates the revelation, the reality, that God is a community: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Spirit has often been described as the Love which exists between the Father and Son.

The Sacrament of Marriage is also meant to be a community of love, a life-giving love which exists between husband and wife.

It seems very fitting to honor the Trinity by inviting our married couples to renew their promise to live a love that mirrors the love of God.

A DAY of PRAYER and ADORATION The following weekend, (June 5/6) we celebrate the Feast of the Body of Christ. It is the Holy Spirit who transforms bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, and through this great gift the Lord keeps His promise that He will be with us always.

To celebrate this great gift, we will have adoration from the end of the Sunday, 11 am Liturgy until Solemn Evening Prayer at 6 pm.

Adoration is an old custom of the Church. It is as if the Liturgy has stopped just at the moment the Body of Christ is held before you, waiting for you to respond "Amen". This provides us the opportunity to realize what a wonderful gift Christ gives us in the Sacrament of the altar.

This afternoon of adoration gives us the opportunity to pray for Jerry as he prepares for ordination the following Saturday. Jerry will be on retreat that week and it would be great if we would come and support him in prayer here.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK

On Wednesday, May 26, we will celebrate the Sacrament of the Sick during the 7pm Liturgy. All who have serious or chronic illness are especially invited.

PRAYER LIST

Please pray that the sick will respond to God's healing will, especially: Eileen Auld, Keith Kovach, Ellen Colombo, Ken Colombo, Emerson Brown, John Fay, Adeline Smith, Richard Waldeck, Clark, Jan Mazurkiewicz, Larry Cecil, Anna Cecil, Catherine Howard, Ian Dunworth, Dottie King, Nola Mitchell, Catherine Schumont, Ken Carson, Emily Cooper, Jake, Shirley Brake, Keith Dunn, Karen (Pat Spindler's daughter), Evan Snowgold, Baby Keegan, Brenda, Paul Allberry, Laurie Deirlein, John Gury, Cheryl Franks, Ron Schaar, Debbie Hartwig, Marilyn (mother of Steve Crowell), Jeannette Wood, Bob Chilton, Kenneth Allen, Nancy, Jane, Merle, Ed, Zora Kolef, Keith Freel, Tom Cavanaugh, Timothy Richards, Mary Kay Davis and Donovan.

MASS INTENTIONS

If you would like to have a Liturgy celebrated for a special intention, arrangements can be made by calling the parish office. A contribution is usually made to pay for the cost of the bread and wine and all the other items that are needed for the celebration of the Liturgy.

ON THE JOURNEY

Pentecost was one of the three major feasts for the Jewish people. It had multiple layers of significance and fell fifty days after the second day of Passover. Because the agricultural cycle was interwoven into every aspect of their lives, Pentecost also marked the beginning of the spring harvest and was known as the Feast of the Ingathering or the Day of First Fruits.

If you're wondering where I'm going with my Old Testament trivia, it's coming from my morning reflection on God's beautiful timing. The descent of the Holy Spirit and the apostles' mission to spread the good news just "happened" to fall on the day set aside to celebrate the first harvest. They were given the resources, the power and the grace to fulfill a command Jesus had given them earlier; but their response remained their own. They could have stayed locked up, sequestered in the upper room, but they chose to move forward.

I was struck with how many times in my own life similar situations have occurred and how important the presence of the Holy Spirit was in helping me move from the upper room. Yours in the Spirit, Marilyn

YOUTH NEWS

I would like to thank everyone who participated in our bake sale last weekend. Your generosity with your time, baking talent and support is truly appreciated. Look for another one soon. I especially would like to thank all the teens who made a special effort to be there for the sale Sunday morning. You should take pride in your dedication and reliability. Thank you for being who you are.

Those who gave me a deposit for NCYC will need to turn in $100 to me by June 20. This is earlier than we previously stated due to the overwhelming response by teens who want to attend. Anyone who is interested, but has not turned in the $25, must turn in their $125 by June 20. Make checks payable to St. Mary Magdalen.

Mark your calendars for June 5. Tommy and I will be having an end of the school year BBQ for all teens who wish to come. Please let us know if you plan to attend by calling us at (810) 227-7937. It will be held at our home from 3-7:00pm.

One Final Note - Your Cedar Point money should already be turned in. If you are interested and have not turned in your money yet, you need to call me as soon as possible. Margaret Callaghan
