ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
ASCENSION SUNDAY
By the time you read this you will have noticed that the feast of the Ascension was moved. By tradition, it took place forty days after the resurrection, which would have been last Thursday; the change was made by the American Bishops last year. As a result, like most other Catholics in our worldwide Church, we now celebrate Ascension Sunday instead of Ascension Thursday. I understand the reasoning for the change, but I also lament something that was lost by the change. Most of us have heard of a Novena. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the term comes from the Latin word for nine and it means nine days of prayer. The whole concept originated with the nine days between Ascension Thursday (the fortieth day of Easter) and Pentecost Sunday (the fiftieth day). During these nine days, the Church prayed for the continued outpouring of the Holy Spirit and that the fruits of the Holy Spirit would enliven and empower Gods people.
With the transfer of the Ascension, we now have only six days of prayer rather than nine, so I guess that means all of us must pray harder. As you departed today, you received a small red card listing all the fruits or the results of the Holy Spirits presence in our lives. One in particular is capitalized and underlined.
Over these next six days, please pray that Pentecost will bring the Holy Spirit more powerfully into your life and the life of this community so that we can be renewed in gift of Christs life. (Remember that we have only six days, so pray hard!)
DIOCESAN SERVICES APPEAL
We are now in the fourth week of our annual Diocesan Services Appeal or DSA. The monetary pledges and gifts collected in this appeal fund over 30 different services offered by the larger, diocesan Church. There are many services that help parishes like ours accomplish their missions. This year our goal is $51,850! As of last Sunday, $50,090 has been pledged or donated. So far, 239 households have contributed 96% of our parish goal. If you have not yet made a pledge or gift to DSA, I invite you to join me in doing so.
DECORATION DAY
When I was growing up, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day. That was because the holiday began as a day to honor those who had died in the Civil War. People remembered the fallen by placing small flags and/or flowers on the graves.Other generations continued the custom as new wars brought new graves of soldiers who had died in war. Among Catholics the custom was expanded to include all the deceased members of a family. As a young boy, I remember going to the cemetery with my grandpa to trim the grass and plant flowers on the graves of my great grandparents, aunts and uncles and of my younger brother. The custom made Decoration Day almost a second All Souls Day for American Catholics, a day when we remember and pray for all those who have died.
So I wish all of you a happy Memorial Day weekend; to those who will be visiting the cemeteries and planting flowers there, I wish you a happy Decoration Day!Fr. Dave Howel

THANK YOU
. The children and teachers of Colegio Sagrada Familia will be excited and surprised. During Lent children of our Religious Ed program contributed and wrote letters with pictures of themselves to share with their counterparts in Puerto Rico. Charity and Justice committee made the little school their 'charity of the month'. All together $1750 was raised for this special school. Thank you all for your wonderful generosity. This has to be one of the most giving communities that I have ever been privileged to know. There is one more surprise and that is your gift will be HAND DELIVERED to the little school.![]()
