All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

A SECOND HOLY THURSDAY Next weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Body of Christ. Here at Magdalen, it will be a special day of prayer. Liturgical historians suggest that this feast was first celebrated in the town of Orvietto, Italy before the end of the first millennium. That makes this feast over 1,000 years old. This feast was celebrated on the second Thursday after Pentecost. Within a few hundred years of its origin, the feast was extended to the whole Church as a holy day of obligation.

While much of the Church still celebrates it on Thursday, in this country it was moved to the second Sunday after Pentecost.

My purpose in telling you the history is simply to make a connection between Corpus Christi and Holy Thursday. On Holy Thursday, we remember how the Lord gave His life for us and to us. This second "holy Thursday" (Corpus Christi) is meant to focus our attention on how the Lord gives Himself to us in the Eucharist. WATCH and PRAY with ME On Holy Thursday, Jesus invited His disciples to the garden to "watch and pray with me". Next Sunday He extends that invitation to us again. From noon until 6 pm, you are invited to come and spend some time in prayer before the Lord. At the end of the 11 am Liturgy, the Blessed Sacrament will be carried in procession to Holy Cross Chapel (near the office entrance). You are invited to come during these six hours to spend some time in prayer and adoration.

The Eucharist will be displayed in a special vessel called a monstrance, allowing us to see the Blessed Sacrament. It will be as if the Liturgy "froze" just as the minister held up the Eucharist before us, saying: "The Body of Christ!" This gives us the opportunity to ponder the wonderful gift Christ gives us in the Sacrament of His Body.

I truly hope that as many people as possible - especially our Ministers of Prayer - will take whatever time their schedule will allow to come and pray before the Lord.

Adoration will end with Solemn Vespers at 6 pm. Vespers is an older name for Evening Prayer. Those who participate are asked to assemble in church. At 6 pm, we will carry the Eucharist back into church and conclude this day of prayer with the Church's prayer. PRAYING FOR JERRY Our deacon intern, Jerry Vincke, began his retreat this week in preparation for ordination to the priesthood on the following Saturday, June 12. So I invite your prayer next Sunday afternoon as a special gift of support for Jerry.

A RIDDLE Melinda Wolterman sent me a picture and and riddle. I will share the riddle with you. "What is greater than God, more evil than the devil; the rich don't have it but poor have too much of it?" (See the last page of the bulletin to find the answer.)

MEMORIAL DAY

MEMORIAL DAY began as a day set aside to honor those who have died in war. Over the years, its meaning has broadened to become a day of remembrance of all those who have died. Liturgically, this is the purpose of All Souls Day (Nov.2) But the national holiday gives a second day to remember those who have gone before us. The Memorial Day Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:00 am in the Worship area.

We congratulate each of them and their families and ask God's blessings on them as they continue their journeys of faith. Yours on the journey, Marilyn

IDEAS TO PONDER FROM OUR PARISH LIBRARIAN

While waiting for kids, doctors, meetings... Pick up a magazine. Check out a copy or two of AMERICA from the Parish Library. Keep it in the car for those few minutes of quiet. The 90th Anniversary issue (April 17, 1999) is especially interesting with articles from past issues by some of the great Catholic philosophers, theologians and activists of this century, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Henri J.M. Nouwen and others. And don't miss film critic, Richard Blake's satire on how the story of Jack and Jill would be reported in the various Catholic publications.
