ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

CONGRATULATIONS To the newest members of our Pastoral Council. Tom Farrington, Ann Kehn, Bob Lorenz and Ed Myszkier were chosen on Pentecost Sunday to serve for the next three years on the Council.

I want to thank them for their willingness to serve. I also want to thank Nancy Rosso, Charlie List, Anne King-Hudson, Duke Davis and Nic Altermatt for also offering themselves as candidates for Pastoral Council.

ON THE DEATH PENALTY Michigan was the first democracy in the world to ban the death penalty. The reason for such an unprecedented move almost 150 years ago was the genuine concern that an innocent person might be put to death.

The recent revelation that a great deal of FBI investigative material was withheld from the defense makes the wisdom of our constitutional ban of the death penalty even more obvious. If such grievous mistakes could be made in such a high profile case, how much more is it possible for similar mistakes to occur in situations that have less public scrutiny?

I am not suggesting that Timothy McVeigh is innocent. He has admitted his own guilt. But I am suggesting the mistakes made in this case and several other recent cases raise serious questions about the justice some claim as the basis for the death penalty.

From a Gospel perspective, there are several reasons why the moral teachings of Catholicism oppose the death penalty. Vengeance is as dehumanizing as violence. The taking of a life never justifies the taking of another life. It is better for the guilty to live than to mistakenly kill the innocent.

ON THE HOME FRONT One of the frequent questions these days is: "how are things at home?" With my sister and two nieces (14 and 20 years old), it has made life much more interesting.

My pooch, Rory has adjusted the best. Since a golden retriever thinks everyone comes to play, having three more people (or playmates) in the house is wonderful.

My sister has enjoyed the company of several new friends in the parish. My younger niece, Kayla, has done very well in school, made some friends and even enjoys fishing occasionally in the pond. Katie, who moved here in February, is still adjusting well. She started working at Sears’s photography within a week after arriving, she has made a few friends and enjoys helping out in the Sunday nursery from time to time.

Among those of the feline persuasion, there are now two. Princess, Kayla’s cat, seems to have mellowed. She only mildly rebukes Rory’s attempt to play with her and, in her own haughty way, seems to have become benignly tolerant of us all.

The newest arrival is a year old cat named Lattie. My sister, MaryAnna, adopted the cat a month ago to replace her dog that died in February. Lattie is the cat of proverbial curiosity, into everything! She is more tolerant of all of us, including Rory. Most of all, she finds her way on to my sister’s lap during the day and sleeps near her at night.

It certainly makes life interesting…

ON THE JOURNEY

It’s come to our attention that we have a significant number of law enforcement personnel in our parish family. If you have been or are currently involved in this field and are interested in meeting with other parish members with the same occupation please contact Gary Prise at 229-5481.

Our next Retiree’s lunch is June 12 at 12:15 p.m. in the Adult Formation Room. It will be our last for this season. We will resume meeting in September with whatever program our June meeting produces. We are interested in your input–please bring your sack lunch and join us on the 12th.

The 12th of June is also the beginning of our summer session of Scripture and Stitches. It will be focused on Celtic Spirituality / Celtic Quilting. A complete list of the saints and topics will be published in the June Visionary. Feel free to join us for the discussion on Celtic spirituality even if you don’t want to stay for the quilting. We meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Adult Formation Room.

Yours on the journey, Marilyn

We congratulate their parents and godparents and offer them our prayers and continued support as they accompany them on their journeys of faith.
