CONGRATULATIONS, FR. JERRY VINCKE Our parish marks another first as we celebrate the ordination of Fr. Jerry and the Mass of Thanksgiving.
Even though his presbyteral internship was only five months and mostly on weekends, you folks have responded wonderfully to him. I know he has experienced your sincere support and encouragement, which added significantly to this final stage of his preparation for priesthood.
You will have to pardon my gloating a bit, but I had warned him before he came - and you responded to him just as I had expected. I want to thank you for all that you have done for him.
The bishop entrusted Jerry not just to me but to us for this final stage of preparation. It allowed him to begin putting all the theory into practice. While I shared with him my own experiences of priesthood, the most important part of my life I shared with him was YOU!
We should be very pleased that we have helped prepare a good priest for service to God's people. I'm sure St. Thomas in Ann Arbor (his first assignment) will benefit, along with the other parishes in which he will serve later.
One final comment: Jerry asked me to let him know when I am finally ready to move to another parish. His desire to come back some day, speaks well of his time among us! Thanks! THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE Almost four months ago I changed the time for Penance from 11:30 to noon to 3:30 to 4:00. I mistakenly assumed that this would be a more convenient time for folks. While there have rarely been many folks, there has been almost no one during the new time.
So beginning next Saturday, the regular time for the Sacrament of Penance will return
to 11:30 am until 12 noon.

Sr. MaryettaStill a reminder that those who have made their deposit for NCYC will need to turn in $100.00 to me by June 20. This is earlier than the letter states that you received at the meeting back in March due to the overwhelming response of teens who want to go. Anyone who still wants to go, but has not yet turned in the $25.00, must turn in their $125.00 by June 20. Make checks payable to St. Mary Magdalen.
We do have a meeting tonight at 7:30. Please plan to bring your study materials for we will be studying tonight. Also, for those of you who are going to Cedar Point, don't forget your permission slips and health forms.
Congratulations to all of the graduating seniors from both Tommy and myself. It was
quite something to see all of you in your caps and gowns last weekend. We are very proud of you
for all that you have accomplished over these past four years. You are very special to us. Thank
you to all of you who gave us such a thoughtful gift. May God bless you all with His grace and
love throughout your journey in life.

Food Collection Now that the summer months are upon us, please don't forget the food collection and alms box in the gathering area. People are still hungry; this doesn't go away because the weather is warm. Charity and Justice would like to give you a little background on the recipients of the food and alms donations you contribute each Sunday.
St. Anne's Parish was chosen as a recipient because they are the oldest parish in southern Michigan and we here at St. Mary Magdalen are the youngest. They are located near the old Tiger Stadium and are very close to Mexican Village. Many years ago, Fr. Dave's great-grandfather helped to place the crosses on the two steeples of the church. Our contributions are included in food baskets distributed to the needy, not only at holiday time, but all year round. This is a very needy area in Detroit.
Mary Lou Brown Ministry is located on Third Street, near Forest and the Lodge Expressway. This Ministry began 32 years ago. A parishioner told us of their good works and of their great need for food donations. Mary Lou Brown Ministry serves poor families and street people. No one is turned away, and no one is ever denied food. Our parish was mentioned in their March newsletter because we donated food, paper products and cleaning supplies. This Mission relies solely on donations, there is no government support.
The sign-up sheets are in the gathering space after Masses when required. Please stop by and volunteer to help deliver the gifts to these our brothers in Christ. For Jesus said, "What you do for the least of my brethren, you do also for me."

OUR PARISH LIBRARY While waiting for kids, doctors, meetings....Pick up a magazine. Check out a copy or two of AMERICA. Keep it in the car for those few minutes of quiet. The 90th Anniversary issue of April 17, 1999, is especially interesting with articles from past issues by some of the great Catholic philosophers, theologians and activists of this century - Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, Henri J.M. Nouwen and others. And don't miss film critic, Richard Blake's, satire on how the story of Jack and Jill would be reported in the various Catholic publications.
