ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

BEST WISHES To all the fathers among us! From one father to all the fathers, I hope and pray that our ministries to our families will enable them to grow closer to God, the Father of All!

CALL NO ONE FATHER In Matthew 23:9, Jesus says, "Call no man on earth your father, you have only one Father, the one who is in heaven." Fundamentalist Christians are fond of quoting this saying to Catholics and then pointing out how we fail to follow the teachings of the Bible. (Oh yes, folks, I have heard this many times…)

When it is read in context, this teaching of Jesus is directed at the Pharisees who held the office of teacher in Israel. They were the final authority for the interpretation of the law and they acted as the ultimate religious authority. The saying of Jesus makes it clear that the ultimate authority is God, who is Father to His people and the teacher is the Messiah whom the Father sent.

Does this literally mean that we should call no one on earth father? (What else would we call the male parent?) Even in the early Church, bishops were considered the "father" of their spiritual family and were called by that title. The consistent interpretation of Mt. 23:9 has been that any one who is called father should live in such a way that he is a reflection of THE FATHER.

IN OUR NAME On Monday morning I was praying as Timothy McVeigh was dying. I prayed for the victims of his violence, the families of the victims, for Timothy McVeigh and for myself.

At 8 am, as the fatal injection began, I prayed the Act of Contrition, asking the Lord to forgive my complicity in the death of this man.

McVeigh was murdered by our government, which means it was done in our name. On behalf of every citizen, we murdered a murderer. He, in turn, claimed his actions were meant to avenge the murders at Ruby Ridge and Mt. Carmel (the compound of David Koresh). So the cycle continues: violence leading to violence; death begetting death.

On Monday morning, I prayed that the cycle would end. As we have sung so often in the past, "let peace begin with me…"
